    Or just buy a handheld?

  • -6

I grew up on the amiga and I have zero interest. Who buys this crap? For $300 I’d expect a working keyboard lol

  • +5

Seems to already be gone. Shame, I've been wanting one since they were announced, but the RRP is a joke.

    • +4

If you can get your hands on a DE10 nano plus mister, you’ll get the best possible experience as it’ll literally be like running it on original hardware.

      • Agreed. I have one mister in an amiga 600 case, and a second mister in a Sega Astro City arcade cabinet. They are just that good.

However, they are in a totally different price league, even compared to the a500 mini at full rrp. The de10's constant price increases plus the accessories like the sram ends up becoming prohibitive for a lot of people.

        • wow I just checked the latest prices… $220 or so. I paid $140 about a year and a half ago if i remember…

          • @Commodore64: and that's US $ plus its like another $40-$50 US for shipping I think?

            • @George2021: Digikey: 24/4/2021
              AUD: $196.14 ($178.31 + TAX)

              Shipping was free from Digikey.
Element 14 does it for AU $224.83 inc. tax as of now.

Still cheaper than an analogue device, especially gives its USD 89 to ship from Analogue :(

              • +1

@Commodore64: You're not referring to this are you?

                https://au.element14.com/terasic-technologies/p0082/e22f17c6…

                That's the DE0?

                The DE10 nano is $358 ( without tax ) at digikey https://www.digikey.com.au/en/products/detail/terasic-inc/P0…

                • @George2021: You've got me, didn't look close enough. Ouch its doubled in price.

                  • @Commodore64: Yep I'm so glad i got mine a couple of years ago as the price is now nuts. Mister makes a lot less sense for a growing segment of emulation gamers at the current pricing.

I am hoping that mister forks on cheaper FPGA platforms I have seen take off as itsa shame that more people can't experience the benefits of FPGA.

                    • @Bluto Mindpretzel: If you don't need the 3d platforms…. I could almost recommend the Analogue systems now that they support open FPGA cores.
They work out of the box, have a controller, and look pretty.
At 220 USD, its alright but the $89 USD shipping kills it.

                      • @Commodore64: are you referring to the analogue pocket? It seems to be the only one at that price range you can order.

                        • @George2021: damn, I'd thought that the other devices can run it such as the NT or DUO, but it appears like only the pocket can run openFPGA

                    • +1

@Bluto Mindpretzel: Yep, I’m keen on getting an FPGA at some point, but not at these prices.

I own enough original hardware to keep me happy and I’m happy enough with software emulation for the time being

                  • @Commodore64: You can buy direct from terasic for much cheaper (edu discount)

  • Wow that was a bargain. Paid $199.

  • Link doesn't work and the item is no longer on the JB site

    Looks like e-waste

  • Fantastic price. Imho these consoles are so much more fun than the Switch, PS5 etc.

    • +3

      LMAO

    • +1

2000+ games available straight off the bat via usb, and conveniently able to play all the AGA games if you had an original 500 onky is great

    • +2

Ill stick with my 1200 030/50

      • yeah is the sweet spot , have cd32 with tf330 and 1200 with tf1260.. 060 is nice for a couple of things but 030 is all you need

    • +1

      Press X to Doubt.

I loved many games from back then, but considering the PS5 plays PS4 games and the Switch has a large well regarded catalogue with many retro games being available too, the old Amiga is not in the same league. It failed to live on for a reason.

      • +1

It failed to live on for a reason.

It failed because Commodore went bankrupt. Although C64 was a greater success, there was nothing wrong with Amiga's architecture or its game catalogue. Being able to draw more polygons per second doesn't automatically make a game more fun than, say, Another World.

        • "Being able to draw more polygons per second doesn't automatically make a game more fun"

Doesn't hurt either and a part of what made Amiga successful was at its release it's graphics were significantly better than anything else at the time. Graphics were important then, they are important now.

As you know it isn't the Amiga itself that made the games great, it was the developers that made the games. Many of the great games on Amiga were available on other platforms, including DOS, so even when Amiga (Commodore) died, those games were still available to work on newer machines.

I'd put many PS4/5 and Switch games up against Amiga games as being greats, I mean Mario Kart 8 still sells like gang busters for a reason. Another World is a great game, but that doesn't make current console games bad, plus it is available on PS5 and Switch so that is a benefit to these modern consoles.

          • +1

            @FabMan: Aye.

There was some amazing developers that really came to prominence in the Amiga Era, and have since gone onto greater riches (or disappeared in some cases) - The Bitmap Brothers, Team17, Sid Meier, Sensible Software, Cinemaware, Microprose, Domark all come to mind…

  • +2

Great unit, especially if you install AGS.

    • +4

Your ideas intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

What's AGS and where can we find it?

  • +2

Shame it's gone, got good reviews and seems like a good package for 99

Seems kind of stupid the keyboard doesn't work. What's the point?

    • Making a working keyboard this size is hard!
      I’m on the task though!

    • +1

      Looks cool?

  • +1

Keep an eye on ebay and other platforms, I'm sure you'll see them all on there….

  • I have a REAL amega 500 that I never use that is still in the box, I doubt I will play this.

    • +2

      REAL amega 500

Wow, those "Amega"s are rare. You may be sitting on a fortune.

      • lol I doubt it.

      • Unless it's sealed/never used in box, it'd only be worth around $500

  • Is this a cut down raspberry pi inside? Could a pi 4 emulate an a1200 properly or is it not powerful enough? I loved my CJ's elephant antics, cannon fodder, Zool!

    • +1

Raspberry Pi 4 would even be faster. This one has an Allwinner H6 ARM processor. It's the same CPU as the Orange Pi 3 LTS, but with less RAM (512MB vs 2GB).

Amiga is not a platform that is difficult to emulate by today's standards. You can even emulate it on a Chromecast:

  • As far as I know this was all gone days ago when I looked, unless they got more stock. I paid $140 for mine, which was a good price. At $99 I would have snapped up another, great design.

    • +3

Were $129 on Amazon couple of weeks ago. Caved and bought one to add to my collection of A1000, A500 and A600. Regretably sold my A1200 a while ago.

      • +3

Have been sitting on a working A1200 and it's built in 30mb harddrive for what must be close to 30 years. Hasn't been used for more than a few hours in the last 25 years, save for some retro SWOS action and to test out the old Star Cursor 2000's. Not sure what to do with it now, or whether to just keep it boxed up watching and waiting as they continue to appreciate. Absolutely amazing devices for their day…

        • +2

They have appreciated significantly in the last 2-3 or so years… I'd be hanging on to it if I were you…

        • if 1200 will need a recap just had mine done.. if you have some fastram just get a CF card and download a disk image so much stuff for it,..

      • +7

There's just something about the Amiga, isn't there.. I never lost my love for the machine, it was just so amazing at the time, such a leap forward.

        • +3

yep Even Amiga clubs are back up and running.. going to one tomorrow night in Brisbane

  • On a related note, what's a good wireless controller that well work with the Amiga 500 mini? Want to play games with my other Amiga loving friend :)
