[Request] vote revoking and revoting

Its happened a few times to me lately. I mostly use my phone, and i go to upvote a deal , but mistakenly hit the neg vote instead. Then I immediately revoke (before I get pwned lol) but I can't then re-vote.

I think there should be a timer before a vote becomes persistent. I fully understand why the revoke doesn't normally allow a re-vote, but doing it within say 2 minutes should be allowed, to cover fat finger syndrome.

/discuss.

I agree completely on being able to change your vote, but I'd go further, and allow people to always change for much longer, rather than just 2 minutes.

Two recent examples where this would be warranted: 1) the OXY samples freebie that was withdrawn, after they had collected everyone's details, around month back: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/75265 ; 2) the Progear eBay bikes that got lots of plus votes, but which have recently been found to have an incorrect part fitted for the number of gears, so they can never operate correctly across all gears: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/78142

The bottom line is that often it can take a while to genuinely know whether a deal was good or not; and people should be able to adjust their votes based on the most up-to-date information.

Last time I asked about this in the site discussion forum, the mods replied with concerns about wildly fluctuating vote counts. I strongly suspect that won't happen, except in cases where important new information becomes available - such as the above - and in those cases, it would be entirely justified.

    • If you allow unlimited time then it is open to abuse.

Also, in most cases there isn't much point negging a deal a week after you and everyone else already pos voted and bought it.

      • It doesn't have to be unlimited. How about 2 weeks after the last comment, for example?

And on the vote changing not having much point, you could argue that voting in general on deals doesn't have much point, other than to signal to others "hey, this is a good/bad deal". The same thing applies even after people have bought it or it hasn't arrived: "hey, I think this is a bad deal now". I think humans enjoy doing this. And it's useful when a similar deal comes up again from that company. So whether it has an immediate point or not is irrelevant; I think "does it make the site better?" is probably the most important question.

Also could there be more vertical space between the + and - bars? It's not as if there's a shortage of vertical space there. That would decrease the likelihood of fat finger events. Especially on small devices.

Same thing with the + and - buttons on comments, they could be wider apart.

    • Yes this could work. If the 2 vote buttons were bigger then it probably wouldn't be an issue. As it stands, the posters avatar is the same size as both buttons combined.

      • Yeah and that would also solve the issue of misleading avatars.

Yeah, definitely a thing that needs to be rectified

Also you can't un-neg comments, as this may happen on small devices.

      Whoops.. Small device lol

  • I so agree with this idea. Glad it isn't just me that accidentally hits the wrong button. There is already a short window for editing posts after they are submitted (1 hour I think) to enable you to make small corrections. The time limit is I believe to prevent replies to the original post to continue to be relevant. There could be dozens of replies pointing out a mistake in the post, only to have the OP come back and fix it, the thread would then be full of irrelevant and misleading replies. The same short window should apply to vote changing in my opinion. Votes should be carefully considered in the first instance. There are a few people on here who are a bit too free and easy with the ol' neg button! Also you don't want lots of changes to an old deal, which probably isn't current any more, and have it promoted to the front page because it suddenly gets enough positive votes.

    • Alternatively, it could sorta be like facebook, where you can still edit it but it shows the edit made as well as the time edited
