Battery Mower Recommendations

Looking for recommendations on a battery operated mower with a budget of $500. Garden would be a bit over 200sqm

I've so far looked at Bosch and Ryobi and since I don't have any tools, the Ryobi doesn't seem like a bad option

Bought the Ryobi $499 36V brushless one (RLM36BL-0) about 3 months ago (based on Choice report) and have been completely satisfied.

Lighter than my previous 4-stroke, fairly quiet and does around 200sq/m on about 2/3 of a battery charge.

    • The idea of an 18kg mower appeals to me. Should be easy to push, once I get the front lawn dethatched. I am sick of my 39kg self-propelled one.

  • I've had an older version of this for about 4 1/2 years. https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-36v-46cm-4-0ah-brushless-c…

Like all electric mowers it's a bit on the flimsy side, but it does the job. Same size yard, about 200sq.m. Does the whole yard and nature strip when dry but if the grass is a bit long or damp I'll normally need to recharge 3/4 of the way through. Being able to mow "up to" 500 sq.m is pretty optimistic unless you're cutting a putting green.

Overall I can't complain. It does what I need it to do, which is mow the lawns, quietly enough, and without me having to fill up cans of petrol.

  • Go the 36v, the 18v even the dual battery, which i have, is just shy on power. The 18v is only good if you really keep on top of cutting every couple of weeks.
However i think they’re good mowers and easy to get parts.

If you get the 36v system then that too till benefit the other gardening tools, that extra power will help.

  • OK, you don't want a petrol mower, that's understandable. But when you are mowing 200 sq metres of lawn outside your own house, before you spend $500 be sure an electric mower wouldn't do the job nearly as well as a battery electric, at a lot lower purchase cost, and save you having to recharge batteries.

I don't reccomend any electric/battery mower really. Maybe the Milwaukee, but haven't tried it myself. I've used the Stihl RMA 510V which was Choice recommended, but it was a total disappointment. Will stick with 20+ year old Honda HRU196 for a few more years..

It does make a difference on your lawn and mowing habits. Short lawn regularly mown will generally be OK with a battery mower, or thicker grass but much slower mowing.

It can be a bit of a compromise, but I’ll take the reduced power and shorter run time over having to deal with petrol and the extra noise and fumes. Whacking the battery on charge after use is the only maintenance I’ve done on my battery mower. No plugs to change, air filter to clean etc.

    • Never looked back since changing to Ego 56v mower. You pay more but it's worth it

  • just bought a ryobi 18v $299..

They're a bit over budget - so depends on your stretch, but I highly recommend the Ego line of garden tools. I had two friends recommend them to me, so I gave it a shot. Haven't looked back. Wayyy better than my old briggs and stratton petrol powered lawn mower. If you YouTube Ego lawn mowers and line trimmers you'll see how incredibly well they cut. /edit - here is a link https://youtu.be/dAC-gWGT3O8?t=424

The one i got was "56V 52cm Select Cut Multi Blade Self-Propelled Mower Kit" about two, maybe three years ago? Still going strong. I've since bought their line trimmer, pole chainsaw and hedger, blower and I'm looking at replacing my current petrol powered chainsaw with their electric 45cm one.

One of my mates ended up upgrading his old petrol ride on mower to an Ego zero turn one.
