Growing Coriander @ home (cheapest way)

I live in a unit and planning to grow some Coriander (in cheapest way) in balcony.

Which soil should I get and from where? Any idea?
I think roadside soil won't help?

Comments

  • I grew some coriander I bought from Coles already potted, placed on my kitchen bench. Watered it sometimes, had lots of light, grew well.

Don't use "roadside soil" if potting in a bigger pot, get potting mix. Supermarket should have it, or any garden store. Also try growing mint and parsley, very easy to do and always useful to have.

  • Thanks, as I don't want to spend too much and also want to see if I can worked out the price "per kilo" for potting mix. Not sure if Coles / Woolies does the price "per kilo" ?

  • Found this in Coles :
Brunnings Premium Potting Mix 22L (Was $7.60 each Now $3.50 each Save $4.10 each)

    ANy comments?

Yep - Brunnings brand potting mix is cr*p.

All potting mixes rated as 'premium' should have the Australian Standard ticks and premium rating on the bag. So long as it has this, what brand you buy should be irrelevant

It's not. There's a huge difference between them. All 'premium' rating means is that it contains some sort of fertiliser and a wetting agent.

Kmart sells one called Green Tick, or something along those lines. It's by far the best amongst the lower priced ones. Haven't bought any bagged mix for a while (I buy in bulk) but the last time I looked it was around the $5ish mark.

Coriander goes to seed very quickly, so it's generally recommended to plant new seed every couple of weeks.

      • Yeah, cheap potting mix is obvious when you use it. All bitsy and crap, full of wood like stuff. I use Terracotta and Tub, mid-priced and things grow nicely in it. Storing the leftover from a large bag would be difficult if you have an apartment, I've never heard of anywhere you buy it by the kilo. Some supermarket stock small sized bags, try Coles.

  • I would strongly recommend premium potting mix. IIRC All potting mixes rated as 'premium' should have the Australian Standard ticks and premium rating on the bag. So long as it has this, what brand you buy should be irrelevant
Brunnings is a well known brand so I'd have no problem and that's a good price for premium mix.
As you are in a unit, have you considered a window box? (see for example http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/lifestyle/a/-/lifestyle/146… )
    good luck

  • btw.. does it grow indoors during winter?..

I started growing veg/herbs in summer this yr including coriander but once winter came along… they all began to wither away and die ( growing outdoors)

    • Aparently you CAN grow it indoors as long as it gets a minimum of 4 hours a day of GOOD light. This does not mean direct sun coming through a glass window however, as it will simply burn. To establish whether it will get enough light in a particular position, , place your hand about 15 cm or so above it, and if it casts a shadow, it should be fine.
