Sturdy Water Bottle for School Kid

Hi OzBargainers, I am looking for a sturdy water bottle for a primary aged kid. I hate having to throw away 2-3 water bottles every year. I would like to send hot and cold water depending on the weather.

  • No straws
  • Sports-style sipper preferred but will settle for spout
  • Leak-proof
  • Sustainable materials and/or recyclable
  • No glass - it's for a school kid
  • Insulated with sturdy base that can withstand drops and not get dented
  • Upto 750ml. max 1L
  • Willing to spend a bit ($50-60), if it means I don't have to replace it every six months.

Brands tried:

  1. Camelbak eddy chute mag - works well, has last well but would prefer one with sipper
  2. Nike hypersport sipper 600ml - Bottle split on impact with concrete
  3. Nike Big mouth - the sipper is prone to breakage - lasts under 6 months
  4. Avanti insulated - gets dented very easily, making it difficult to stand the bottle up
  5. Misc Thermos ones - thermocafe etc - gets dented very easily, making it difficult to stand the bottle up

Thanks for your help.

  • I got a contigo stainless steel one on amazon the other day after deciding i didnt want to splash out for YETI money. seems pretty good for now, coffee made at 8 still decently hot at lunch.

Perhaps a neoprene sleeve for whichever bottle you buy as an alternative?

We get through SO many, from super expensive to kmart cheap its not funny but, this year i got these:

and so far we have not had to replace one all year! No leaks, sturdy, holds a fair but and you seem to be able to bash it around a fair bit as well.

I am so happy to have go it as replacing broken ones all the time grinds my gears.
On special at coles this week

    • These lasted the whole year for yr 1 and 2 kids

  • We've been happy with Yeti drink bottles, our local Weber store had them on display which helped with choosing the size/lid types. Only drawback is the insulated bottles are heavier than the cheap plastic ones.

  • I've been through heaps with my kids and I can say the Chemist Warehouse branded one (not in all stores) is very sturdy and lasts.

  • We have these kleen kanteen's for our kids. They all have uninsulated ones

and we share around a few insulated ones when we need them

They enjoy them. A couple have been dropped enough that the bottom is dented and they don't sit well. I just get out the hammer and bang them until they are sitting steadily again. Most have lasted years, probably 5 years, although a few we have had to replace the lid which began to leak.

Oasis bottles with the screw caps.

We have the 550ml and the 750ml bottles and have been great.

Being in the same boat, we have found good mileage with this https://www.decor.com.au/product/decorhydro-double-wall-stai…
Pretty sturdy, dents are hardly noticeable, and we are in it's second year for the young one and it still seems to hold strong.

Which one? Neil? Rick? Vyvyan? Mike?

  • If its not going to dent, you'd probably be limited to plastic - which isn't really sustainable. So bit of a catch 22 there. I think you may be searching for a unicorn bottle that probably doesn't exist.

For primary school I bought Sistema plastic water bottles around the 500ml when on special at Woolies or Coles and made sure I had 2 spares.
In yr 5 and yr6 I moved to Sistema aluminum water bottles.

No mater what you buy the bottles will not last forever due to the rough and tumble of the school yards.

  • We saw all the kids in Japan had something like this: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07N62MWQM/
So we bought some while we were over there, flip top lid with spout, no straw to clean. Can get plastic or stainless versions if you look at the similar items on amazon and different sizes. Our 4 year old loves it with the removable neck strap too.
