Unpaid Induction Training - Illegal?

My employer has contacted me requesting that I complete an online induction training in my own time.

I have been an employee at this company for over 2 years.

When I pointed out that I’d already completed an induction when I first started (in my own time), the email response was that some of our standard operating procedures have changed and it is a requirement to redo the induction else I cannot work any further shifts.

I had a Google and the Fair Work Ombudsman- unpaid work webpage states: “If an employee has to do training as part of their job, they have to be paid the right pay for those hours worked.”

Illegal or no?

  • 1 hour course… which means probably 20 minutes. Do it on work time, not worth the time you are taking addressing it.

  • +1

I have done the online training courses I was required to do during work time. Then when they complained about other work not being done I simply point to the mandatory training & ask if they would like to pay me an extra hour to do the training outside my regular duties. Boss goes away after that. Gives me an excuse to take it easy for a whole shift whenever a new training module appears.

  • Lol, I had to do multiple unpaid online induction before starting with several employers. Don't bother with trying to get paid for inductions, it creates unnecessary tension. It's only 1 induction in 2 years and it's barely an hour, get over it. If you really want to claw some money back, just go and take more bathroom breaks often. Like the saying go's, the company makes a dollar, I make a dime, so I sh#t on company time

  • 100% Illegal. If any employer tells you that something is REQUIRED in order to remain employed with them, then they have to pay you for the time it takes to complete it.
Also, there will be a minium amount of hours they would have to pay you, something like 2 or 3 hours (depending on the award you are employed under) so even if the induction only takes you an hour, they are legally required to pay you whatever minimum hour amount is listed in your award.
