  • How much electric bill would I incur with use of electric mattress daily? Desperately need one in these poorly insulated old Victorian rentals..

    • +5

I can't find the wattage of this particular model, but in terms of orders of magnitude, electric blankets use about 100 watts. Let's say this one is inefficient and assume 150 watts. If the price of electricity is 30 cents/ KWh, then this costs 0.15 Kw * 0.3 = 5 cents per hour. Googling also gives similar figures. A human outputs about 100 watts of heat, so this blanket will feel like someone giving you a hug. haha

Time to do some maths? I couldnt find any numbers but found a similar heated mattress topper which was 2 x 60W.

That means at high, it would use 120W per hour (120Wh). But it would be seriously uncomfortable to put it on high all the time, maybe only for 1 hour and then 6 hours on low each night? Lets estimate 1/3 the power or 40Wh on low.

So one night would be 360Wh or 0.36kW. At 40c/kW (bracing for the price rise), or just around 15c per night.

I have the wifi version of tontine, king size.
It has three heat settings, low, medium, and high. It consumes 21, 41, and 75 watts respectively (each side).

  • +1

Generally these are about 100W per side when used on full power. The way I use mine is on a smart plug to run for an hour a day. Makes the bed super toasty to get into but doesn't need to be running all night.

Assuming 200W power consumption it will use one kWh every 5 days. Let's conservatively assume $0.30 per kWh and you use it for 6 months per year, it would use about $11 per year.

Love how everyone has different estimates, but the end result will always be significantly cheaper than any other type of heater.

  • +1

what does it means by 2in1 ?

    • +1

I think it's squishy squishy and warmy warmy.

    • I read the product info and everything and I still don't get what's 2 in 1 about it.

    • +2

It's a mattress topper plus a heated underlayer.
You normally get either a mattress topper or an electric blanket only.

  • What's the difference to the one selling on catch.com.au for $76.30. I think it's the same brand but different packaging? Or and one says 'Luxe' for double the price?

    https://www.catch.com.au/product/tontine-2-in-1-microfibre-h…

    • catch is microfibre, david is cotton

maybe more differences i dont know

    • Multiple zones and more heat and timer settings.
The Comfortech range from Spotlight has the same number of settings as the Luxe and is cheaper.

Probably a sign of how unpopular these expensive products may be as nobody has commented on this earlier, but all sizes but Single bed is actually cheaper on tontines website.

Oh it also popped up on Tontines site - theres a SLEEP15 code which gives 15% off when you order from a new email.

Things to look for with Tontine…
    * microfibre/polyester VS cotton (polyester fill?) VS wool (some others have a quilted layer and/or antibacterial)
    * 2in1 mattress topper (strap and newer remote, slightly cheaper) VS electric blanket (little bit more expensive with fitted sheet, but older generic remote, same as Bambury and Lien House versions i.e. same factory?)
    * Multizones i.e. Top/Body, Bottom/Feet
    * Wi-Fi. I've heard people hear an annoying buzzing noise. Also Wi-Fi doesn't work well for some. Up to you whether it's worth controlling beforehand, or just wait for it to heat up. I guess it depends on your routine before bed… or if you instantly just jump in πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ Not sure of extra power consumption or if the settings are more specific though

Tontine website has sale, also SLEEP15 get 15% (as stated above). There's also a cashback, but prob won't work with code (i.e. code is more)
Luxe Bedding eBay store has some discounted products you can stack with codes.
David Jones and Myer have sales atm, but these don't look as good (but you might have giftcards/cashbacks?)
BigW sells Tontine, but seems range is limited. Might be worth it if you have 10% monthly discount + gift cards (+ rewards points)
Spotlight have some (only one Tontine), might be cheaper if you're a member. They 10% price beat, but not for online stores.
No Tontine at Harris Scarfe but thought I'd throw this into the mix as well πŸ˜…

Sunbeam ones seem superior with their "Sleep Perfect" range due to their "sensors"… but not sure if "worth it" as I couldn't find much of a discount πŸ€” They don't do zones though… I guess the sensors do that for you.

Breville also seem to have high tech ones if anyone is interested.

(apologies if incoherent, just a quick brain dump first thing in the morning πŸ€“ my overthinkers will understand)

this is very helpful! Tontine confirmed their lux and comfortech ones are the same just one is cotton outer and the other is microfibre like you mentioned above.

With the new spotlight coupon its made the Queen comfortech 2 in 1 $108 from spotlight

no worries 😊 I was gonna go into fabrics, and the Pros/Cons for each… but had to stop myself πŸ˜…

I can't edit it anymore, but at the time, only one Tontine product was showing… nows there's more, so I'm guess I didn't search it correctly before, or they remove em when no stock.
