http://www.newsgroupdirect.com/blog/2012/08/24/back-to-schoo…

Summer is drawing to a close and school is getting ready to start back up. We’re having a sale to give you a chance to save on the true back-to-school essential, usenet blocks! We’re discounting our 500 GB blocks to just $20, a savings of $40 over the regular price.

The Fine Print

The sale runs from 12 PM EST on August 24 until 12 PM EST on September 4. No sale prices will be honored after the sale expires. The sale prices are available to both new and existing customers. You are free to purchase multiple blocks, at the discounted rate, if you choose. Coupons (new or existing) do not apply to special rates on Terabyte Tuesday. All blocks receive a 10% allowance for headers, so a 1 TB purchase will actually give you 1.1 TB, or 1,100 GB.

  • do they offer a search engine and direct download of files like easynews?

    • sign up with xsusenet Free.
I ended up going for premium at $50 per year unlimited.
awesome speeds and based in Norway so better retention policies

  • Anyone know of their speed if its anygood? Been using easynews but this 500GB would last me like 2 years, lol

LOL love this line: "We’re having a sale to give you a chance to save on the true back-to-school essential, usenet blocks!"

If anything, I would have thought usenet blocks would come in more handy during the school holidays! Not that I even knew what usenet was back in my school days!

    • Opposite for me, when I'm at uni I get 1Gbit/s fibre, when I'm at home I'm on boring old ADSL2+

      • Usenet at Uni? Is that even possible?

        • It is at Monash. But you don't get fibre unless you live on campus and wifi reaches a max of about 5MB/s on astraweb.

      You could always download textbooks.

      • eBooks

  • I think the astraweb $96 a year deal works out better for me. Would be a great deal for light use though.

    • Light use? Even at 200GB p/m (on usenet alone) this deal beats Astraweb's $96 deal. I must be old thinking 2.4TB of Usenet a year is more than just light use :P

      • At 200GB it's the same price, and this is a time limited special offer. Which makes it great for light use as you could use the blocks over a long period.

  • First time getting into UseNet. $0.04 per GB sounds great.

Anyone have a indexer site for game iso's? Normally I buy keys and then torrent the disk. But I want to try it on UseNet.

    Thanks.

    • NZB Matrix is your best bet.

Can someone explain to me what usenet is?

Yes I'm a total noob okay.

    • -3

If I told you I would then have to kill you (or kill myself for breaking a fundamental usenet rule)

    • I Would, but if i quoted a James Bond movie, i would have to kill myself

Good luck getting an answer, lots of smart asses here especially when it comes to Technology. Us Mere Mortals would be lost without google these days so I suggest you try the same ;-)

      http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2009/08/how-to-use-the-heck-out-of…

Usenet has been around since the late 70s as a sort of sister tech to the early bulletin board systems that the first generation of true nerds cut their teeth on. It was designed for discussion and lived across tons of decentralised servers. For most intents and purposes, it’s been replaced by the internet as we know it today, but it’s still very much alive, albeit with a different face.

This is an easy to understand explanation, with a fairly good guide to using it.

      • -2

I understand that. But what is so special sbout it? Why is there a cost to it? Why do people use it pretty much?

        • -1

Because unlike torrents, you don't have to upload.
There's no need to worry about ratios.

Second is that files on Usenet usually hang around for several years. Torrents will eventually die off within a matter of weeks or even days, and the download speeds are also highly variable.
And you know what happened to MegaUpload…no need to even talk about file locker sites because they have basically sunk into the dark ages. A lot of sites will delete your files as soon as they suspect piracy.

So that basically leaves Usenet as the last remaining bastion and haven for leechers. People are willing to pay for it because it's the most reliable type of service out there.

Whats the difference between Usernet and say…. TPB?

    • +1

Umm TPB is just a website, usenet is a huge network of newsgroups/disscussion groups that has been around longer than the Internet. Not even apples vs oranges lol.

      • oh ic ic thanks

  • Anyone know which is better, NewsgroupDirect or astraweb?

    • This is better value if you want block plans…

  • -1

    Hi .
we only have pocket wifi unlocked ( we are useing pre-paid internet)… thinking of getting this block 550G for 20$….. is this possible guy?? and how to set up? anyone have this set up b4??
    TU

    • If you're going to use usenet over a 3G connection you're going to have a broke time.

    • +2

Lol, you still have to pay for your 3G data. This doesn't 'upgrade' your data plan to 500GB for $20.

  • +1

Actually, I'm revoking my pos vote. I just tried their SSL servers and the connections are rubbish. Non SSL is fine but who wants to open themselves up to that.

    • +1

Well I use SSL and have 3 block accounts, 1 with Astraweb, 1 with NewsDemon and 1 with NewsGroupDirect.

The SSL is close performance wise on all 3.

      ie

I use SSL on all 3.
I set each to 20 connections.
I connect to all 3, ie 60 connections total.
I max out my line at close to 11 MB/s (100 mbit cable) when I use Usenet. I probably don't need that many active connections.

Last month my downloads (62.5GB total) were split:
      Astraweb 23.4GB
      NewsDemon 19.2GB
      NewsGroupDirect 19.9GB

So, all 3 fight and share the downloads, and NewsGroupDirect is about 85% of the speed of Astraweb, and faster than NewsDemon. YMMV.

Anyone using <200GB a month should seriously consider block plans like this which are around 4c GB. My last purchase worked out to 3.62c/GB converted to AUD.
For me, at an average of 60 GB a month, it's about 4 times cheaper than a $9 per month unlimited type recurring plan. (60GB x 3.62c = $2.17 per month)

Just buy blocks when on special, and have more than 1 provider for redundancy.

      • I have astraweb too, it maxes out my connection 2.2MB/s on SSL 50 connections.

This deal one starts out maxed but only for about 1s, then it drops down to zero and then fluctuates around 200kB/s, that is no better than my unlimited free 2 connection xsusenet account.

        • The unlimited free xsusenet account recently just changed to 10 days retention, so anyone after a cheap block, this is a good price.

Also I can confirm that I am getting faster than 200 kB/s with SSL for anyone else considering this deal. Mind you my adsl connection syncs at only 5mbps because of my distance to the exchange, so the most I'll ever get is 500-600 kB/s

        • All 3 together ATM were getting 4.9 MB/s.
(Slow day for some reason, I am torrenting too ATM)

OK, just switched mine to just NewsGroupDirect SSL, and getting a solid 2.2MB/s. Only fluctuation is between 2.1MB/s - 2.3 MB/s.

I don't know why you guys are getting rubbish speeds.

        • Ok I just tried SSL again now, 50 connections and it's maxing out my link so it's all good now. They must have been having an issue with their SSL server the othe day when it was crap. Will keep an eye on it.

  • This is apparently a fairly low quality highwinds reseller. I get thecubenet, Giganews and a easynews reseller.
