This category offered one spot of good news for Samsung: The jury ruled that Samsung's Galaxy Tab tablets did not infringe on Apple's design patents for the iPad.
The US patent system is been reformed, but I believe it doesnt take effect until next year.
Irony is that this will stop much of what Samsung was arguing - Prior art. The US is one of the few jurisdictions that allow the prior art argument whereas other jurisdictions say, first to patent is all that is needed.
Actually in Korea they also won with some of the patents, but the Korean court also allowed some patents for Samsung. But they did uphold the patents.
As for speed, the remarks on this can be used both ways. Some also point out, is that the decision was unanimous, hence the speed vs a hung jury which would have meant a long decision time.
Which for Samsung will mean they have less likelyhood of getting a jury next time to overturn, ie their arguments didnt even convince one jury member.
What it actually means is it will go to appeal and because it's so extreme and idiotic, most of it will get set aside. You might even get the wholescale reform the US patent system so urgently needs.
People are already remarking how … interesting … it was that they came to a verdict in such a short amount of time, just before the weekend. Almost as if the most important factor was getting out of there and going home.
