Coupon from original deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/780670

Can't vouch for the store and it's not clear whether this is the 38mm or 40mm version, but reviews are good and looks like you get the genuine ST1901 movement at an amazing price for a mechanical chronograph that is very interesting to look at. Note, it is hand wind only with no hacking.

Also stated as Sapphire Crystal but no guarantees of that.

Another seller with similar price.

http://aliexpress.com/item/1005005628974774.html (US$64.09 with extra strap and panda dial version available)

Take your pick for a punt. Usual price for these from other sellers is about double.

These are the unofficial version, but the "official" Sea-Gull version with same Sea-Gull movement but several hundred dollars more is not worth the money.

    • For all those on the fence, the movement itself is worth $80

assuming you will get the actual Seagull movement :)

I have read a story about some guy who purchased a cheap skeleton watch from Aliexpress, the seller assured him that it was the real deal, but once he received the watch, the skeleton dial was actually a piece of molded plastic made to look like the movement, inside was just some cheap generic quartz movement………….

      • +1

I'm sure in that case he would have chose close to the cheapest one..

Your experience on Aliexpress is strongly based on buying from known recommended sellers and stores.

      • sure but that is something Aliexpress can easily rectify…

If the ad says you get a seagul manual wind movement, ala ST1901, and you don't get it - you get refunded…

I mean that risky lies with all online purchases thats not from a retailer but here are protections in place to minimise the risk.

        • +2

Still a lot of stuffing around which can be avoided by purchasing from reputable sellers (YouTube channel recommended, word of mouth, number of sales etc ), and some things are too good to be true if you find the very cheapest listing. You could spend 90 -120 days sorting it out..

          • @G-rig: thats why we are here mate.

            • @Bargainitis: Yeah I trust the AliExpress stores JOMW YouTube channel reviews, the official stores etc.

  • +1

So much jargon here I don't understand :((

    • All I hear is, there is genuine made in China, and there is good knockoff and then the knockoff.

  • I paid $240 for this one in Nov 2021. I think I got ripped off :'(
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001304377435.html

    • +3

Sounds like you got a good one at least not a counterfeit. Sounds about right though just have to buy this stuff when the big Ali sales are on and cashbacks etc.

Id trust this one and is similar price to what you paid
      https://m.aliexpress.com/item/1005001304377435.html.

Makes you wonder how many different versions of cheaper copies are floating around, they'd be getting knocked off by a lot of companies and the quality would vary if they go from US$25 to $200+, so maybe you got a good one.

I've never felt I needed one of these and easy to give it a miss, seems like an unknown entity to some extent.

      • +1

Yes that's the exact same watch I bought (we have the same link ending in 7435). It came with a metal mesh bracelet and one in leather. I didn't realise there were copies of this watch. Thanks for your comment, makes me feel less ripped off.

        • +2

Yeah at least you'd be getting the one Jody got and reviewed on his jomw YouTube video. It's clear that the op probably posted a copy and you don't even know which size they send you.

  • oh, no, I missed this deal!

  • I'm starting a watch collection, i have 2 mechanical watches so far, just bought one yesterday. Need to add this one to my list

  • +1

It seems like recent customer reviews (accounts not created this June) aren't good.

    • Yep, all recent are saying the watch is quartz, not mechanical.
If we do get one without a transparent back, AliExpress should be quick to give a refund.

    • Oh geez, doesn't sound good but it's a highly copied watch and a lot cheaper than the good homages (the official ones are like 300 euros on the website.

I had to scroll down the reviews a fair way to find the one-stars, saying no display case back (and quartz), the cronometer hand is stuck not at 12 o'clock etc.

$100 is too much to pay for a copy of a copy of a copy rubbish product so ld be sending it back for sure, long saga all that. Better off spending more for a good one like I linked above, even if it's $200, or just get something else.

  • +4

As of today, they changed the title of the first link (JHLU seller) to include "NO Mechanical Watch" due to the backlash/false advertising.
The previous title was: "2023 New China Aviation Chronograph Original Seagull 1963 Movement ST1901 for Men Watch 40mm 38mm Sapphire Mechanical Watch".

For anyone who bought it via the first link, you're probably going to be getting a quartz watch with a non-transparent backing as the reviews show.
Nothing confirmed regarding the second link, though given the reviews also being all from Japan and the one non-Japanese being negative (with the same issues), it likely will be a quartz, non-mechanical one as well.

Google Cache of the link shows the original title, so it may be worth taking a screenshot to support a refund claim (you could also just inspect element to make the title the same).

  • +2

Dogs, not surprised and didn't get one, too cheap to be true. The link of the store I posted also says they are counterfeited all the time using the official photos.

Hopefully everyone can get refunds and neg the deal.

    • Yeah doesn't look like we're in good shape on this one… hopefully the refund is easy

      • What's the process if it comes to this?

        • +1

Seems like we will receive a watch, but the wrong one. Therefore, we should be able to submit a refund request, which will involve describing the problem and uploading photos.

  • +3

Received one today from the second listing … Complete junk quartz watch nothing like listing. I guess purchases via the other listing likely to be the same.

Apologies all for the problems this post has caused :((

    • Unfortunately it's a reality of buying from AliExpress. Don't beat yourself up too much about it mate.

      • I've never had an issue luckily but have heard of parcels going astray etc. You just have to do the research and buy from the right stores and sellers, no shortage of cheap crap on there.

    • Same here. Quartz junk 😮‍💨.

  • +2

Defrauded. Junk quartz received. Colour, size and movement all deliberately misdescribed.

  • never change, aliexpress…never change.

  • +3

Just received a fake watch hardly worth $20

  • Too good to be true lol.
Get your negs in, hopefully you get refunds.. the AE seller won't like it and should be banned.

  • easy to get a full refund?

  • +6

ahhhh just received mine today. haven't been reading the feedback but as they say, too good to be true. https://files.catbox.moe/o0chtv.jpg

  • +1

Damn, this was too good to be true!

How do I pull up a google cache of the link so I can take a screenshot of the original listing?

  • How do I open a dispute
    Aliexpress website is a mess

    • +1

Go to My Orders and then the Order Details Page for the item. Click on the Returns/Refunds link next to the item there.

i had to wait for a day after delivery before it would allow me to raise the dispute

  • I've been offered $51. It's a piece of sh*t and worthless. This dishonest seller will refund 100% if I send it back to China. There is no way I'll see a refund if I send it back. Can you please share your refund process?

  • +1

For those still playing at home - can confirm they sent a quartz movement. Will be initiating a dispute.

  • +3

Everyone always goes for the absolute cheapest, lesson's learnt and only one neg lol.

  • Got mine today. How do I know if it's a quartz or mechanical movement? The movement on mine seems to be a lot smoother than a standard quartz movement - I though that was a mechanical style movement?

    • +1

Should have a see through back and be able to see the movement.

    • +1

The mechanical movement needs hand winding every two days or it stops. There's no automatic winding.

The quartz copy uses "sweep second" chrono movement to mimic the above. Ticking second and the subdials work differently.

    • +1

It should look like this one, second picture.
      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001304377435.html

      Interesting that they even say

      Notice:
Our watch carry the original seagull st1901 movement .
Recently, there have been some links that have stolen our pictures and sold this watch at a low price. Please be careful and not to be deceived, it is a counterfeit watch !!!

      • But.. my watch has this exact movement? (As per the video in your link).

        Back is not seethrough though…

        • Not sure, can you feel anything moving if you shake it etc?
Only way to know would be to take the back off but you may not want to.
I can assume everyone would have got duped from the same seller.

          • @G-rig: Here's a link to the movement - this doesn't look like quartz movement but I don't know watches enough - https://imgur.com/a/5hzNvjn

            • @jaygee: That's definitely quartz.

              Long story:

The red long hand is ticking in timekeeping mode (normal mode). It is static at 00:00 if it's mechanical.

The left subdial at nine is chrono centre second, while in the mechanical version sweeps.

The right subdial hand moves. In the mechanical version the right subdial is static at 00:00, except when it's on stopwatch mode.

Interestingly, the right subdial indices have been adjusted to display 24hr time instead of 30 chrono minutes. I reckon the extra effort makes this a homage category, not a total shitter. The Sunon PE60 movement itself is quite interesting, but I'm a chinese watches enthusiast. I'd pay probably $30-40 for such a piece.

              • @Fullhalter: I guess if you got a refund and got to keep it it wouldn't be a total loss.
It definitely isn't a 'Seagull Movement China Aviation 1963 Mechanical Chronograph' as was advertised though so hopefully you guys get a refund. Not worth 90$ but haven't seen the quality on the rest of the watch.

              • @Fullhalter:

The red long hand is ticking in timekeeping mode (normal mode). It is static at 00:00 if it's mechanical.

Ok so ive let the watch do its thing and I can confirm, the red hand has stopped ticking has been sitting at 12/00:00 for the last 30 mins, but the watch is STILL ticking away (meaning the time is accurate).

Again, trying to get my hand around it.

The right subdial hand moves. In the mechanical version the right subdial is static at 00:00, except when it's on stopwatch mode.

The right subdial is sitting on 23 (just before 24) and hasn't moved since.

Aliexpress is providing me with a full refund. All I did was take a video of the watch (which had misaligned hands), and said that it was advertised as a mechanical watch but they provided me with a quartz version.

    • How long did it take between uploading the video and getting a refund

      • Around 1 day, they are quick. I think there are many people that are asking for a refund for this item, so they don't need to investigate too much.

        • -1

ozbargainers flocking for refunds on aliexpress like seagulls on chips….

          • +1

@franco cozzo: Say anything is X percent off and it will be like fat kids on a doughnut

        • I uploaded a photo 2 days ago. Still waiting on refund

I've claimed via Aliexpress and PayPal simultaneously

    • without having to send it back?

      • Yep, no return at all, just a full refund.

    • Weird they only offered me $20 back or return. I'm disputing it further.

      • decline the offer and ask for full refund :)

  • Received mine and it is definitely not mechanical with clear back.

  • +1

In hindsight, i knew it was a fake, but at least give me a fake mechanical watch…. not a quartz movement

  • Just lodge a dispute for refund.

  • +1

  • Received mine today, i chose the panda version. Its definitely quartz, you can tell from the pushers, a mechanical watch should click in a few mm, this is quartz so it only moves a fraction of a mm. Also, the second hand is offset by 3 seconds (pointing at 57 minute mark when reset). I will be requesting a full refund, this watch is a POS.

    • Same here. Seconds hand is offset by 5 seconds.

They're requesting we send it back, address is so long and down some alley it's ridiculous

China Guangdong Province Huizhou Huiyang District No. 46, New Housing Group, Qiakou Village, Dongfeng Village (Second alley into Workers' Canteen)
      CN 516223 Huizhou Guangdong Province

Postage will probably cost $40, not sure if i'll get it back from aliexpress how does that honestly work?

No way to communicate with aliexpress either

      • What a cluster, would have been worth paying double for a proper version of these.

I've sent something back to one of those addresses before and they got it, mind you PayPal was covering the return. Just take photo of the package as proof and the Aus post receipt. Still sounds inconsistent with the return process, how someone else was offered $80 and didn't have to send the watch back, I'd be jumping on that deal.

      • Postage for me is around $20 from Sydney. Still a hell of a ride as you need to message the seller to accept the shipping cost as that was the determination from AliExpress and they have to reimburse for it. So far they keep telling me to refer to the refund/dispute page for the address. I was offered the $80, the seller declined that option pushing it to the return/refund, even then the watch is not worth the $14 for something that'll never be worn and is of garbage quality/QC.

        • You'd take that for a quick resolution, could sell for $40 probably.

Or just stuff around with sending back and hope it actually makes it there and gets reimbursed as well as the postage. Just have to be patient I guess.

          • @G-rig: Yes, patience please.

My sympathy to everyone involved including the seller. They were probably having a quiet siesta when hundreds of orders came and went; From their pov, hundreds of Aussie scammers wanted freebie replicas of something popular. Too many to rma without wanting to return already… I'd be pissed too

In hindsight, i knew it was a fake, but at least give me a fake mechanical watch…. not a quartz movement

Problem there's no mechanical chrono priced this low that resembles ST19. There's a limit even for china. Might not be the case here, but that's probably common knowledge over there. Mind the official Sea-Gull Tianjin copy is well over $1K… Lost in translation. Muddled a lot by skmei/steeldive spruikers these days…

            Hope y'all get your refunds.

            • @Fullhalter: Good lesson at least, pays to do research and was obviously too cheap, but the sellers are fraudsters too posting photos and descriptions of the more expensive/good auto copy etc. It's just a confusing one and selling site for something like this, being a copy of a copy of a copy and too many Chinese sellers knocking it off.

Hopefully everyone gets their refunds and purchases something else of a better more expensive version.

            • +2

@Fullhalter: Aliexpress return process is dragging on with only a low partial refund offered or full refund if i return the watch but seller will not give me the return address.

I have absolutely no idea why you would have any sympathy for the seller who listed fake info and pics of a mechanical watch, then sent a cheap quartz substitute instead that isn't worth half what we paid.

From their pov, hundreds of Aussie scammers wanted freebie replicas of something popular**

Its not being a scammer or wanting a freebie by literally buying a mechanical watch from China (at a very competitive price) that is not a knock off or infringing any trademark, just a standard issue military watch.

              • @Sprintz25: First of all I'm also on your side here, but the seller was a legitimate "fashion" watches vendor regardless what you think what they ought to be. Quartz rubbish for you, treasure for others. Hard to fathom, but some might think it's even a privilege to wear reps. It's a scene. Valid or not, that's another argument.

Hence I upvoted G-rig's earlier comment:

Still a lot of stuffing around which can be avoided by purchasing from reputable sellers (YouTube channel recommended, word of mouth, number of sales etc ), and some things are too good to be true if you find the very cheapest listing. You could spend 90 -120 days sorting it out..

                Genuine re-issue $1K. Authorised variants ~$350. Un-authorised reps ~$250. ST19 movt $150. Quartz reps ~$100. Shouldn't it be obvious where $93.44 fell under?

I wasn't knocking you personally, but there was an expectation gap there. The onus should be on Ali schooling dodgy listings and refunding misled punters.

*Ironically, there was a vcm collector who owns a museum grade vintage 1963 and the re-issues but wears beater quartz copy. Again, another different pov…

                • +1

@Fullhalter: Except that the watch doesn't match the description and photos listed, that is where people have issue with it.

                  • @nadan: @nadan You and I know that's the case, but iirc I stopped adding one to cart when the cart selections pics didn't match the listing, thinking "hmmmm reject mov't or worse, quartz"

I really regret I didn't use a stronger warning early on other than "Wow, it's too good to be true. I paid $400 not long ago… "

Hope you get a full refund.

                • +1

@Fullhalter: Thanks for replying. I think we'll agree to disagree. I have no problem with Quartz watches or people buying replicas etc. The problem i have is when an item is listed with an incorrect/false/deceptive description and pictures. If the description had said Quartz and actual pics this deal would have been upvoted zero times and i doubt anyone would have bought one. Mine ended up costing me $107 delivered, the watch i received is literally junk (misaligned seconds hand, no chrono functions etc etc).

I see the pricing you have listed above, there are some sellers on Ali that have the quartz model for ~$40 so it isn't obvious that at ~$100 and listed as mechanical that we were going to get shafted.

After all this is Ozbargain, where people are after a deal, its not uncommon to see items on sale for 30 - 50% off the normal price, so an ST19 based watch on sale for ~$100 isnt a ridiculous proposition. Who knows if the factory has surplus watches to get rid of and is doing a flash sale…….

                • +1

                  @Fullhalter:

the seller was a legitimate "fashion" watches vendor regardless what you think what they ought to be. Quartz rubbish for you, treasure for others. Hard to fathom, but some might think it's even a privilege to wear reps. It's a scene. Valid or not, that's another argument.

Yeah there doe a few issues with it.

                  1. No one had ordered/received before recommending that store or vouch for the seller.

                  2. The seller originally advertised as automatic movement and the product was a cheaper quartz. They obviously ripped off pictures and description from better quality automatic watch.

                  3. Buyer's should have been a bit weary that they quality may not be good compared to the once reviewed on YouTube that was $200+. This may have been acceptable if it was an auto albeit not as good quality. Most stuff on AliExpress is junk so I try and trust stores and sellers recommended for exact items. Most impulse buys on Ozbargain tend to be good but always exceptions.

                  4. I got no pity for the seller, whether they meant to deceive the buyers or not.

            • -1

              @Fullhalter: Negged for offering a thought :-/

This is exactly why I'm often reluctant to engage on ozb.

Neggers: Hope you'll get a full refund too.

              • @Fullhalter: Everyone's opinions are valid. I'm guessing it was about pity for the seller, but the other watches mentioned aren't as illusive or copied to this extent and you know what you're getting (ie steeldive from the official store).

                • @G-rig: I thought as well.

Yes, many were decieved. However, they should also be aware that some guy somewhere who live in an alley in china had to refund hundred of watches some of us get to keep.

They could be down thousands of bucks and financially ruined thanks to a cut and paste description and our sense of ACCC style entitlement after "buy first ask later" memes.

                  Sorry to be that guy.

                  • +1

@Fullhalter: Fair point. Yeah haven't seen how many were sold before and after ozbargain but it's probably a lesson for all. Pretty sure the profit margin is huge on anything from AliExpress though, and the sellers are probably greedy. They should spend more time writing their ad properly. You can't tell me that the quartz watch is worth 90$ when the crono hand doesn't even sit on 12oc. Support AliExpress provide support to buyer and seller but don't know.

  • Peeps

I’ve lodged a dispute and got a refund around 5 hours later

Alibaba stepped in and issued the refund

    • +1

How? It normally takes a long time before they step in.
Did you chat or opened a dispute and what did you tell them?

    • Would like to know too

  • While some got their refunds I'm having to go through multiple hoops to even get anything. Aliexpress has agreed with me and offered me refund and return or partial refund. I have rejected both. The seller has also rejected the partial refund of ~$80 and wanting me to send the watch back to China and for it to be confirmed delivered before they even issue a full refund. Yeah right i'm not sending a watch to god knows where and trusting the seller to confirm the delivery before issuing the refund, otherwise will have to go through another dispute process with AliExpress to get my money showing proof the item was delivered via tracking info. Has anybody else had luck via Paypal dispute?

    • I have filed for both and am still waiting on an outcome. The watch is in the bin so I can't return

    • If you got $80 out of $92 back and didn't have to send the watch back then surely that would be ok? You would still have to pay for postage I expect which would be$20 at least?

Otherwise just have to send it back and wait for a full refund. Was a lot easier when papal covered free returns but took that away this year.

      • Seller would cover the postage, just the process outlined by AliExpress is a bit cumbersome as i've done it before. Essentially would need to go get a quote from the postie and deal directly them to "agree" on the postage cost. Ship it back, constantly check shipping to see if its delivered. When delivered, message the seller saying its been delivered and tell them to process the refund + postage costs. IMO not worth the hassle at it took around a month last time to get a refund.

Not to mention the seller has rejected the partial refund option, so that is out of the question.

        • Yeah long process and waiting for refund, and hope it doesn't get lost, and that they are honest.

          • @G-rig: PayPal has asked for the item to be returned

Tempted to send back an empty box as an f u

            • +1

@hotmustardsauce: That's funny.. wouldn't be worth risking your refund though.

Anyone going to buy a proper one of these now lol?

        • Seller isn't budging on the full refund without returning, and the AliExpress dispute has ended in the refund/return category… Guess I'll ship the watch to abyss and pray.

    • +1

Just providing an update, I have shipped the item back over a month ago and got a response today from AliExpress saying they have not received the item still. Checking the tracking information the item is held in customs and it was the sellers responsibility to gain customs clearance as I am unable to do anything about that. AliExpress has acknowledged this and told the seller to obtain customs clearance but then put forward a new proposal of "No Refund". The seller has accepted this, and this whole time I am not able to even provide an response or comment on the dispute page after I had submitted the tracking info.

Going to lodge a paypal dispute now. Not sure if anybody else has gotten their refund after returning the item?

      • thats infuriating!
document everything and back it up with screenshots of emails etc & hit up paypal directly….ive had success doing it this way

  • Has anyone had luck charging back via credit card

  • +1

Managed to get the full refund. Uploaded just photos at first, then a video after aliexpress responded saying photos would only be a partial refund. Photos showed the no clear backing + face being different to advertised, video showed the second hands dial not sweeping so ymmv if yours is working.

  • +2

A bit ridiculous that there isn't a single consistent policy for refunds. I've uploaded photos and videos with only a refund offered if I returned the item.

  • +2

Managed to secure a full refund without returning the item with both photos and videos. Seller tried to dispute and refuse with an image of the dial? but aliexpress stepped in at the end. Filed under model not as described.

  • Can confirm, had to submit photos a 2nd time to get the full refund. The sellers image of the watch where he tried to dispute was such as joke, just a marketing image.
