Tapped into Opal with the wrong debit card which has a $2 balance. Was only charged $1 and it has been a few days now. Did I accidentally find a hack to cheap public transport?
How Does Opal Charge Me When Using Debit Card?
Comments
It's definitely not at the end of the week, at least not for me. I'm with Me Bank, and I get one finalised transaction per mode of transport per day. So if I took a bus and train one day, it's two transaction (one is $2 cheaper if it's in a transfer window). If I take a train in the morning, and the return trip later, then it's one charge on my CC bill for both trips.
Well it’s definitely on my Up debit card. Not sure if they do things differently with your Me CC.
Did I accidentally find a hack to cheap public transport?
they really didn't think of such an edge case i guess
Your card gets banned on failed payment
perfect opportunity to use those coles mastercards for airport runs
I was going to say, “If only you used your powers for good instead of evil”, but this is actually a good idea (insert evil laughing).
need contactless chip
You just learnt that Opal is annoying.
My revolut card got overdrawn
What if you churn revolut single use cards 🤔
Paying with Visa debit today for first time instead of Opal. I see $1 pending. Let's see in few days.
You will definitely be charged more than $1.
If you understand how Opal works, you won't challenge it. It is right to charge $1 at first as there are some variable factors to consider in the journey for the exact amount, with some taking hours to settle down.
Wasn't expecting free ride :) $7.08 is finally appear today for that Sunday metro line return trip. Read somewhere that this authorization delay is expected for first time use of a credit card. Great tips from avoidfullprice for connecting credit card with Transport Connect to get break down of the fares. A plus to enter in your car plate number for commuter car park, this one you do not even have to tap to get out, similar one with Westfield for 4 hours parking.
I've just used my debit card for the first time on public transport in Sydney instead of an Opal card. Left Sydney 13th of June but just was charged just under $25 apparently today, dated 17th June?
Now I need to sit down and try to recall my movements and travel to see if I've been charged correctly.
ICYMI, you can link your debit card to a Transport Connect account, and it breaks down your travel journeys and associated fares.

Being debited end of week checks out.
What happens when you tap on with a debit card with $0 balance? Does your account get overdrawn?
No shit Sherlock
They debit your card in one hit at the end of week ie monday or sunday
$1 is pre auth
If your account doesn’t have enough balance, your bank may charge you overdrawn fees
