Out of stock for this price $859 now
back in stock for $575 as of 2023-07-11.
I was literally just thinking of upgrading my DS220+ this morning….
Less thinking, more clicking
If only I'd checked OzBargain this morning whilst sipping my coffee… Adjusting my routine now :)
Yes I tend to check OzBargain first, then get clothed, have coffee etc.
wow are people trying ot run a data center or something? lol why are these things geting bought up so quickly.
I use them as a backup. Put all my stuff there incase my desktop drives crap themselves.
don't like cloud services?
Try pricing cloud services for the amount of content you keep on a NAS
@redwolf: depends on how much storage you want alot of free cloud services can give a user enough to backup the important things. Other services provide free photos and videos uploads. Unless your backing up over 2tb of data all the time, Cloud services can be a cheaper option, and more reliable. 1 NAS or external drive are old school backup methods its good but not great, the proper process is to have multiple backups across multiple locations. and media, having many backups in many locations ensures data recovery, and in some cases data security.
@kungfuman: "Unless your backing up over 2tb of data all the time"
How many people here are buying a 4 bay NAS and filling it up with 500GB drives lol. Sure cloud pricing is relatively cheap up to 2TB but if you are running a NAS 2TB is nothing. If you're buying a 4 bay NAS these days you're more likely looking at the 16-72TB range so you really need to be comparing cloud pricing to that instead of 2TB.
@eecan: many people that are video editor will backup all there projects and cloud storage wouldn't be something for that individual because it would be insanely expensive to backup 10 to 20 or even 40gb of data full of video projects. NASs are more of local network storage device with some redunancy depending on the array. amount alot of computer or a single one it allow you to access you data from any where at any time. But for backups though its not the best option, but as I said it depends on your situation and how much data you have. for some people cloud storage is a cheaper option or others having a few NAS devices is an option. It also up to how much money you want to spend to ensure you data is safe, and recoverable.
@kungfuman: Well yes an individual's need can vary and that is the point. Anyone that is even considering buying a NAS has obviously reached a tipping point where cloud services are no longer cost efficient or fast enough to serve their needs.
Sure a cloud service could still work for some but when you go into a NAS deal and ask why people don't use a 2TB iCloud or Google One plan instead that is obviously going to be a dead end.
@kungfuman: My multiple attempts of downloading 100gb data (my family video clips) from onederive failed all, so NAS is needed.
Cloud services rely on internet speeds, which lets be honest, nbn is completely shit in this country thanks to the liberals, so you're really limited to how much you can back up. A Nas can do so much more, back up your photos, imaging your PC/s, host your music and movies. You dont need to subscribe to 10 different streaming services that will change their polices whenever they feel like.
Wouldn't call cloud services a backup.
You still want something local@kalayt: Services like backblaze are definitely a backup.
I use backblaze to backup everything and keep another local backup for my most important stuff.
I don't mind actually for my commonly accessed files, but not something that I would use for large data files or sensitive files.
Some of us are only on NBN
Looking to get smaller one to compliment as a backup for 12 bay unit.
They do much more than just being a fileshare.
If you get a plus series they can run VMs and Docker to be able to run containers which opens it up a lot more.
I run mine with Plex, sonarr, sabnzb and a bunch of others to roll your own streaming.
On 50/20 NBN and it's fast enough to give access to other people.
Ha ha. Looked at this and said to myself - for my simple home scenario, why would I need this???
Can all of you have these explain the benefits of something like this?A mix of Plex server and personal backups of photos/documents?
Same, but running a pair with one backing up the first.
The biggest advantage for me is QuickConnect. I can access my files from any device, from any network, from anywhere in the world. Just like you can with google drive, but with less spyware
I work remotely and do this all the time around the world. Also use my Synology as a Plex server, don't need to subscribe to dozens of streaming services :)
what is your simple home scenario?
Geez. I get a neg for asking a question?
I'm glad it is out of stock as I was considering buying this and I don't think I actually need it lol. #SavedMeMoney
You're on the wrong site then =)
Hard to save money on this website, even that is the main purpose of using this website
Well I ended up buying one for $575. Then got an:
- 18tb exos for $529
- 16gb Timetec ram for $55
- 8 port switch for $25
- 1tb WD SN700 NVEe for $119
And now just ordered another 18tb exos for $559
So much for saving some cash lol.
Apple’s new Vision Pro push us to upgrade the storage asap, cause it need much much more space, I think.
Fair points.
I don't need PLEX and I think for me the easiest and most reliable backup is a good quality external SSD or high capacity HDD containing my backup data and stored offline, which kind of negates the need for a powerful NAS.I have a simple Seagate Central network drive on which I can store shared files etc.
But keep thinking, eventually I should look at something like this.
You don't need anything until you get it and then you realize you needed it :)
this
one back-up disk of your photos is not enough
you need morethen you also want pics on the network so you can view them easily, otherwise why even have them
i even use mine as a photo source for the tablets around the house that act as digital picture frames
FYI: my simple home scenario
a) mirror onedrive personal files to nas (files get accessed via onedrive and copied to nas for backup/snapshot)
b) d/l 'camera roll' pics from onedrive to nas for filtering and sorting
c) receive pics from dslr for filtering, sorting and processing
d) maintain a 1yr mirror of photos in onedrive (in varying resolutions/time frames)
e) do external hdd backups for on-site offline bakcups
f) do external hdd backups for off-site offline backups
h) a few kids movies.the nas turns on once a week to do tasks a to f, and h on demand
Damn, would have been all over this if I saw it earlier.
back in stock for $575 as of 2023-07-11.
Thank you! You are AWESOME! I have just bought one. :-)
EDIT: I just went in to look at the item again (after I had done the purchase) and it is back up to AU$859.
Forgot to mention that I also got 14 days of free PRIME when I purchased this so just in time for the PRIME sales. :-)
All good, I've been smashing F5 on that page for a few days now, picked one up for myself and a bunch of other stuff to build it out. Very excited.
@iuselect: First NAS for me but I have been lurking for many years so was ready to pounce when you posted that message. Right now working out what new drive to get. I'm thinking of Seagate Ironwolf Pro 18tb (newer NT version, not older NE) at the least for my first drive and then I'll add in my current 18tb in the second slot and possibly the 16tb as well. The 4th slot will be left spare for the next upgrade. Hoping for an Amazon Prime deal to pop up.
Static Ice for the Seagate Iron Wolf Pro 18tb is about AU$599 but at least it is local stockEdit: Pulled the gun and got the Seagate 18tb Exos for AU$529.
My primary use case is PLEX but will not be able to look into the world of containers (dockers), online storage for my family etc.
Will be interesting learning about DSM 7.2.
They put better cpus and more memory into units with more bays. This is important for Plex transcoding, but not for file serving.
Things have changed because of the enormous capacities of hard disks, e.g 20TB.
Reliability is unreal for enterprise disks like Ultrastar, 2.5Million hours mean time before failure. Therefore need to question the purpose of say 4TB disks using up a bay if starting from scratch.
Anyway I bought a QNAP 2 bay TS-233, with 16TB disks. Huge storage and the little cpu is enough for 1080p Plex transcoding.
You only get 50% of 16TB if you do RAID1 on a 2 bay NAS.
Good point but I don't use RAID. I back up externally to the same disk size.
RAID won't protect from someone taking the unit for example.
I saw this post may be after 15 mins time and saw 1 in stock and then couldn't checkout. It was on my wishlist and was checking daily. But sadly no luck today.
I don't understand the use case of these. I built my Linux server with significantly more powerful hardware (i5 4670k, 16GB RAM) for significantly less money. This is assuming the HDDs are an extra cost.
I guess it does give you the ability to plug and play and it just works, as I did spent about a month learning Linux and getting everything set up.
Because doing that you will be using significantly more power.
ReqelinOz will soon be posting about how his power prices are going up on the 1st of July
and significantly more time to build or set up a GUI like the one on Synology too.
Not really, those sff pcs barely use any power when idle. T variant chips will have similar power draw, hard drives will always use the same power regardless and will be the biggest power draw and you only need 1 fan for the cpu (if you can't get away with a passive heat sink).
And if you're only using it for backing up at the end of a night then you don't even need to keep it on all the time.
Anyone got real world examples of power draw with their setups?
I converted an old HTPC from years ago to a Plex server and it just runs Windows lol.
Works fine, only time I was let down was when I tried to get into Home Assistant and setting up virtual machine/Zigbee system that fed back was too complicated for me / time consuming. Also can't transcode 4K but is that attainable yet within a reasonable budget? It draws around 1- 1.2 kWh/day with 3 drives, running 24/7. With the upcoming price hike that'll rise to ~ $170/year
Would using a NAS with 3 drives use much less power?
You summarised the use case of these quite well in your last paragraph.
missed it. Was it a pricing error?
reading above notes it seems to be some pricing error to me
was thinking of upgrading mine as well, recently built a DIY nas but didn't really meet my expectation, the power draw is too highThe DS423+ is a great upgrade at this price.
I think Amazon got the price wrong, it should be for the DS423, not DS423+.
Those who seize the opportunity are lucky. It's back!
@eecan: Thanks a lot. I placed an order as soon as I saw your message
Thanks. Bought one as a backup. Shows delivery on 21-23 June.
For $853?
For $575. Got destructed after purchase and forgot to comment.
it bugs me they still get away with putting celeron cpu on this 😥
it's for power savings
This model has the Intel CPU that can still do transcoding for plex, the other 923+ model is Ryzen now.
and doesn't have (optional) 10g NIC but 923+ has!
Yeah the new ryzen model is somewhat better compared to this celeron model. I am
using a rs1219+ unit and cpu is way too underpowered for some of the tasks.
Amazon already shipped mine.
Just got a camels notification - back in stock.
Same, got one!
Thanks, got one!
Thanks got one, feeling better now after missing it :)
Just got one too! I have been looking for weeks was going to get the 920+ but the only stock I see is catch for over $1K :( I just found out about the 423+ plus today and it seems it can do all the 920+ can do just cant expand it. So need to make sure I get enough disks for it! I don't have any 4k content and wont do for a while yet.
I will be getting minimum 4 x 8th but might go for 10s
Back in stock at the same price right now.
It is back to AU$575 again. Buy now if you want it. (12 July 2023 - 9.15am AEST)
Gutted I missed out on this
It was popping in and out so maybe keep an eye out and subscribe to this thread and if it pops back, you can do what I did and just click BUY and get it. The funny thing is that I also had a book I was NOT planning to buy but I was in such a hurry to click BUY, that I did not notice that it was also in the order.
It is back in stock as at 10am 20-Jul-2023.
Just ordered one for delivery in 2 weeks. You’re a legend. I didn’t even get a camel notification.
Just ordered mine. Was going to get ds220+ for $469 but got sucked into buying this. Last asustor got fried in a power outage so got a ups as well this time. Mwave has got a good deal on cyberpower
https://www.mwave.com.au/product/cyberpower-br850elcd-bric-l…
DS423 + doesn’t support ECC memory
DS423+ cannot expand hard drivesDo I really care about ECC memory? I don't even have that in my home PC. Also, what do you mean by you cannot expand hard drives? Personally I'm happy to have it with the 4 x planned 18tb drives I will put in it. If I need more space, it will probably be in about 5 years time and by then I'll go buy a DSx27.
Still in stock @$575 as of 9am
Bugger, been wanting this deal for a while
I occasionally check the link and so if I see it is back I'll tag you.
Thank you! Really appreciate that
