Are Wine Review Subscriptions Worth It?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to get into wine and I recall an old bargain thread where someone linked a real old school website where you could pay a bunch of old fogeys an annual donation to read their review of wine. They'd make some value recommendations.

Are these websites worth it? And does anyone know that website?

I can't bring myself to believe Halliday or Hooke because they're so big and influential.

One persons favourite wine could be another person cat pee.

  • You don't need to pay for wine reviews. Check out QWine Reviews for
great reviews of Australian wine. There's plenty other good free reviews out there.

Buy 10x ~$10 reds. Drink and rate 1-10. (Not recommended in a single evening)
Rinse repeat. Increase $ where necessary.

  • Are any online reviews worth a pinch of shit anymore? Na i dont think so either

  • The best way of trying wines you like is to go to a number of tastings and see what takes your fancy. It's a really personalised thing depending on your palette.

The best wineries I've been to are those that I've discovered by accident.

The cheapest way to get wine you really love as everyday drinking stuff is to find the wineries you like then get their cleanskins (it's a bit of a trial and error method but once you know what you love it works excellently.

  • Best wines under $20 - is a site I used to subscribe to for cheap recommendations. I found it well worth it. He found some good offerings for cheap.

    • I think these are the guys I might be talking about. Thanks!
