Windows 8 Now Available on MSDNAA / Dreamspark Premium (Free Windows 8 for Students)

1160

Windows 8 is now available on Dreamspark Premium. Most Universities are members of this program in some faculties. While this deal isn't available to everyone, I wanted to raise awareness as it only became available this morning.

For Monash students, your Windows 8 Professional CD key must be obtained through the website on campus.

        • Good point, no I didn't. I just tried it and it asks for the username too, it's apparently meant to be set up by the uni.

        • I'm pretty sure it's the CSE login (you only get one when you do a proper computing course/subject), not your usual zPass

        • +1

Bummer. Maybe enroll in a COMP as a gen ed next sem, just to get a key, then drop it lol.

        • Make sure you get two keys (32bit, 64bit)
          There you go.
          http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/people/studentoffice/policies/yel…

      • I went to register and then got this message asking for a username..

"To complete your registration, an administrator must first have created an account for you. Please enter your account identifier below."

Anyone from UNSW CSE got this working and how?

        • Ok. I sort of understand now. It seems like u have to register using the uni's computer and not at home just like the uws fella above.

          Can someone confirm this?

        • No.
You need a CSE login, it's different to the normal z3123456 login, if you don't have an active computing class - it will not let you login.
Just ask a friend who's doing comp science to do it for you.. :|

cool works for UTS: Engineering. :D
    downloading now.

  • Anyone from La Trobe got this going? I used to be in CSE subjects and got Windows 7 through it, but my account doesn't work for this.

  • How many keys/licenses can you get through Dreamspark Premium?

    • +1

Added one to cart and now downloading.
Tried to add another one now, but wouldnt let me.
So maybe only one per account?

      Prints the following error:
The item cannot be added to your cart because you have already ordered this item (or a related item) and cannot order it again. You can view your previous order by clicking Your Account above. Download orders can be re-downloaded from there.

I got 2 licenses. One for the 64 bit and the other for the 32 bit.

      • Can confirm the case also with windows 7 pro

    • Thanks guys

You can get two keys. 1 x86 and 1 x64. However the keys work on either copy.

      • cool didnt know that :D

    • You can get 2 for Windows 8 (x86 and x64) and 4 for Windows 7 (x86, x64, SP1 x86, SP1 x64)

      • do you actually have 4 different keys for windows 7? mine only allowed me 2 (1 x86 1 x64)

So annoying how the science faculty at University of Sydney isn't enrolled in Dreakspark when Engineering and IT are :/

  • aw edu.au isn't eligible (maybe it's just me?)

  • taking forever to load. Anyone else having this problem? Or maybe it's because i'm on a mac. :p

    • +1

      load times are extremely long.

For those that study at UQ and are part of the EAIT faculty, here's a direct link:

    https://internal.eait.uq.edu.au/auth/login.ephp/https://stud…

Just need to sign in using your uni login

Nice, still got access to it despite just doing a single elective IT course last semester.

    • Ok scrap that, it didn't allow me to add it to my cart :(

  • Did anyone from a business / commerce course find themselves eligible? Out of interest.

    • nada here. Uni of adelaide.

  • I've signed into Dreamspark before and download various programs/OS's, but I can't seem to get Windows 8, it says "Your school is not enrolled", I signed in with a TAFENSW Email.

    • Yup, your institute has to cough up for Premium for Win 8

      • and then the person who paid for the subscription has to add you in and give
        you a user id :( bummer….

  • Anyone from QUT know how to get an account?

    • Would like to know this also. I've had a quick look but cant find anything :/

  • +1

Just giving my two cents. I've been running the enterprise version without media center or windows media player for about 2 weeks.
Metro can be annoying at times and you wonder where stuff is or how do I shut down my pc but eventually it grows on you. It boots up pretty quick on my SSD. And seems to run anything I use to use on W7.
Widgets are pretty good as well, I've also heard it supports the kinect for better browsing experience in metro?

Anyhow worth a try that's what I reckon.

    • "you wonder where stuff is or how do I shut down my pc". MSFT spend millions on usability and interface design, your experience as a average user says it all. Basic functions should be obvious/intuitive.

MS got pushed us to get fancy graphics cards in our PCs to run Aero only to now have a flat interface that looks like a calculator ;-)

I'm sorry that I don't know the policy for connecting to MSDNAA for other Universities…

      • -8

Nah mate, you're being pretentious, and I don't like that. I'm mad!

        • +2

I didn't get any hint of pretense from the OP so stop being an insecure child and assume anyone who mentions going to X university is a snob.

        • -6

I attended the Univerity of Life.

          I passed with flying colours.

        • As well as the College of Unoriginal Jokes it seems.

  • Here is a link to my blog with some tips for Windows 8 -
    http://teamterryexchange.blogspot.com.au/search/label/Window…
I have to learn it as I am in IT I will be supporting it one day.
    BTW… Hyper-V in Win8 is pretty cool.

  • Hmm never used dreamspark. I've registered for Dreamspark received a welcome email but haven't been provided with a username so I'm unable to download it from the webstore. Will I be getting a username soon? Or am I missing something?

    • yeah me too… stuck at trying to do some shopping..

    • Try accessing Dreamspark Premium on campus. When I did that, no login was required.

      • @TheFlock: When I search for "Monash" in the on the linked page, I get like eight results — which one did you use which appeared to work?

  • Downloading now, thanks.

It specifically says for me that it is a 2 year subscription. UTS Engineering Student.

    • i got the account, where did u go to download?

      • Hey, sorry for the late reply. Just google "UTS Dreamspark".

What the hell is an admin issued username anyway?

My uni (QUT) has dreamspark premium but always asks for this username.

  • how about rmit university?

  • Downloaded Win8 64bit and finally bought myself a 256gb samsung SSD.

Will install in a few days when the SSD arrives, quite excited :)

Btw only some faculties from some uni's offer MSDN access, general just the electrical engineering and IT departments (I got mine from when I did a few elec engg subjects at usyd).

  • Neither of my facilities support dreamspark, and I am going to 2 universities. In general the supported facilities are science and computers.

  • Check whether the department or faculty have a subscription first:
    http://e5.onthehub.com/Portal/PortalSelectInstitution.aspx?p…

In some cases, you can bypass some restrictions on campus based on the uni IP address, which gets around the need for an admin issued username.

    • +1

I went through that link and it still says:

"To complete your registration, an administrator must first have created an account for you. Please enter your account identifier below."

      • Where did you try and access the link from?
        Uni/Work/Home?

        • Home, I don't see how it makes a difference when either way I'd need to register an account to access it.

        • If you are in an approved course, and log in from a computer with a certain IP range, you won't need to 'admin approved account' at all as that screen won't come up as pointed out from other users.

        • Would it work if I used the uni's proxy to access it?

They give us access to the proxy so we can upload to our student drives.

        • At Uni it will probably automatically log in for you, based on the IP address.

        • If it's a transparent proxy, doubt that would work at all.

Even then, the proxy might be useless as the IP of the proxy might not be configured to bypass that page if it is restricted to an allocated IP range within a faculty alone.

If you have VPN, that may however work.

        • Yes it's a VPN, I'll give it a shot now.

EDIT: No luck, it still wants a username.

  • I have got several keys for the different version on MSDN through work, I didn't know Windows8 was also available for free. Which version would be more suitable for home use?

  • Sorry, any tips for how to access this at Monash?
I tried logging into my Dreamspark account but don't see any Windows 8. Do I just log in while on campus?

    • +1

If you log in through a computer in the Engineering area, it may work.
If you study an IT or Engineering related course, you shouldn't have an issues.

  • I am a student how do i get it for free?

    • What course are you studying?
In most cases, you will have access if you are an IT or engineering student, as the university will grant you permission, assuming they have a Dreamspark Premium account.

In some cases, some science and business students may also have access, but it depends on the university IT department.

OP may want to update this :)

For Monash student, you can choose your faculty and login using your Monash login
    http://msdnaa.monash.edu.au

You can ONLY access it from Monash Campus computer. There are 3 faculties from Monash Uni that have access to Dreamspark Premium
    - Engineering
    - Information Technology
    - Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences

    • Have you tried the link yet? It doesnt work :(
I am part of the Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences faculty =.=

The only link that works for my friends (who do engineering) is this one:
      http://www.eng.monash.edu.au/ecms/msdnaa/

P.s U have to be at the eng computers and be an engineering/It student.
just simply login with ur usual user and download

P.s.s one my friends got there key blocked by sharing it lol

      • I'm in the Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences faculty too. Can't get it to work from mrs.monash.edu IP, maybe you can try from within Building 15?

        • Tried at "cl-15-220-c6.med.monash.edu.au" on level 2 of building 15. Didn't work.

EDIT: "cl-15-110-c6.med.monash.edu.au" also a no go

          also tried from mrs.monash.edu

  • my uni doesnt support it :( if anyone doesn't want their key please pm me.

  • edit good find

  • I graduated last year but still have my university email address. When I try to log in to MSDNAA/ELMS/Dreamspark it won't let me in because I'm not a current student.

    Oh well, I tried. :P

  • Anyone know how to get the Fingerprint Reader on HP to work? I guess we have to wait until Win8 is officially released :(

  • Anyone know how this works for Melbourne Uni?

I am in a CS degree so should not be a problem..

    • This question was answered already…
      "TheFlock on 24/08/2012 - 09:38 ¶
I believe Melbourne Uni is one of the only Universities in Australia not to have Dreamspark Premium. You most likely have access to regular Dreamspark which doesn't include Windows 8"

  • Also available for BizSpark members!

  • Worked for me: USYD Civil Eng student.

For some odd reason, my wacom drivers don't work on this version, it did in the consumer preview. Now my tablet doesn't accept touch, only pen input ==
