Installing CCTV at a Property in Remote Area with No Power Supply

I have to install CCTV at a property which doesn't have regular power. It would be uninhabited and power supply is not reliable.

I want to install CCTV at a property Overseas where my parents live for few months of the year . It has a normal Broadband internet but the power supply is dodgy and not reliable .

For the cameras I was thinking of either battery operated ones ( which should last at least 3-4 months) or Solar powered .Solar is an option but in winters it snows a lot and is gloomy for 3-4 months . I can do the wired ones also but then power supply is an issue.

The other problem is the power supply to WIFI router/modem , is there any battery powered router which could last for few months. What options do I have for modem power?

I was also looking at 4G solar powered Cams but again Mobile service / signal is also dodgy there.

Property is double storey around 700Sqm.

Any suggestions?

  • Out of interest, what is the purpose of the CCTV at such a remote area?

Early warning in the event of escapees.

    • Weed farm

  • Your post is not clear. Does the property already have an internet connection, since not relying on 4G?

There are options of having portable power stations with solar charging panels to power everything you want. Depends how far down the rabbit hole you want to go and how deep into your pockets to make this happen.

What you might want to look at are what I think they call trail cameras, or wildlife cameras. They use motion detection to detect anything in range, and can take images or videos.

You could of course use security cameras, but they use way more power. For them to operate for months you would need a significant sized rechargeable battery being recharged every day from solar.

    • Don’t most trail cameras you need to go check the actual camera to view the footage?

      • Yep.

If you are just concern about recording when there's motion, you might be interested with Amazon Blink Outdoor. I've used an indoor version and battery last for 6 months even though there's lots of recording happening due to my pet roaming middle of the night.

I am currently using a similar one to this (forget my brand but assume same/similar factory):

Works well, charged it to full when I first got it and have never charged again and it has been over 6 months. Make sure you get a model with a large battery i.e. 15000mAh in link above.

It only activates when it senses motion or when you access via the app and control. Even with spotlights, it has only ever dropped a couple of % and easily recharged back to full the following day.

If it's in a holiday destination 3rd world country just pay some local $1-2 to check on the property.

Power outage for how long ? Few days no power ?

Consider a reliable UPS to power your camera / modem router.
Have to factor in the cost for replacing UPS battery which usually lasts about 2 years or so.
