Home/Business Laptop under $1.5k

Need to get a new laptop for hubby who will be WFH, spreadsheets, data processing etc, but may need a few Windows open at once. I worked for an MSP (in accounts so don't expect much) in a previous life and know they usually liked Lenovo, so started my search there.

Is this one okay?

Otherwise the Dell dude recommended.

Intention is to hook up to a monitor and keyboard to make it a bit more comfortable.

          8GB RAM non upgradeable?

            @netjock: enough for most people…

Yes, the thinkpad is still the leading laptop for work. The one linked in the OP is a good choice.

      +1 to this comment.
The thinkpad deal in the post is actually really good. For number crunching, the larger 16" screen and number pad would be perfect. I think having the latest CPU is less of a concern.
Scotty's suggestion below is better if having newer components and portability are the priorities.

Edit: oops, missed this sentence. My monitor and keyboard comments are irrelevant.

I've had two Dell laptops (both new, just one was school supplied) and a Dell desktop, didn't have a good experience with them but maybe I was just unlucky (?).
I find HP and MSI to be decent though.

  • Thinkpad T series- still good. Easy to open up and swap bits out if anyone is that way inclined. 3 year global warranty.

But… why doesn't hubby choose the laptop? He's the one who is going to be using it day in day out. What appeals to one person might drive another person bonkers.

I've never used a Vostro… it's the XPS and (some other line, name escapes me) which should be more comparable to a T-series.

    • Hubby is basically tech illiterate, it needs to work but doesn't know any of the reasons why.

If he doesn't care too much, just get the Thinkpad. 3 year onsite warranty versus 1 year onsite. Thinkpad support has always been good in my experience- in the more distant past I've used their Oz service, and overseas they've been great- perfectly happy to give me the original build ISOs for old corporate laptops that we were recycling into an NGO. They sent a tech out a friend's place for a motherboard replacement within 3 days and her Thinkpad has been fine for the past 4 years.

I'm surprised at the 1 year Dell warranty, but maybe because that's the Vostro line (which I haven't seen for a decade or so, it was dropped in many overseas markets).

Performance of most business-class new laptops will indistinguishable for day to day use, it only matters if you're running serious graphics work or hardcore computation (and Excel doesn't count).

So you get something that's reliable and has good support- iirc from Lenovo there's even fairly decently priced coverage for accidentally destroying the thing.

Ignore all the advice obsessing over specific processor or SSD generations- this will not matter to 99% of owners. It's like obsessing over the difference between 500Mbps and 1Gbps internet connections when all you do is watch Netflix.

  • Would it be better to get one with a 13th gen processor? Are the 12th gen ones power hungry in comparison?

  • +2

I would go with the Dell one, it has newer CPU, latest ddr5 and most likely a gen 4 ssd which is faster than the previous gen 3 drives.

Go with AMD if you can, it's much more powerful and power efficient than Intel, should be same price or cheaper.

ThinkPad T14 AMD Gen 3 for $1,219. Faster than T16 Intel Gen 1, lighter more portable & cheaper.

    • @scotty it's showing 1435 to me?

        Deal expired.

Don't forget 15% shop back atm on Lenovo store.

thank's all, he decided on the T16 and got the shopback too.

Me too… don't think you can go wrong for the price.
