    There are lots of older iPhones out there. Maybe in a few years the sales of lightning cables will start to taper off.

      Apple is being forced to adopt USB-C by the EU, no later than than the end of this year (2023). However there is a lot of speculation that Apple will do exactly the same thing they did with wireless chargers - "yes, non-apple products can be used, but we've deliberately crippled them". There may be USB-C cables with MFI certification, and only with those cables will you get peak performance.
