Woolworths SIM - Poor Reception and Slow

Look at this speed searching for a YouTube video: https://youtu.be/G2P9agsdKWg

I believe the Woolies SIM uses Telstra network, but I never had these speed/reception issues on Aldi in the same location.
Gutted that I switched and lost my data bank. :(

I believe the Woolies SIM uses part of Telstra network

    Fixed that for you.

    • Aaah. Thanks jv. Just finding this out in the forums. Buggar.
      A positive - there's no contract, I'll make a switch.

Boost is the only Telstra MVNO that uses their full network.

(Be aware that Boost are increasing some of their prices early July)

To make this point doubly clear

Aldi also only uses part of the Telstra Network, the same part of the Telstra Network as Woolies.

ie any reception issues you have on Woolies would be identical on Aldi.

            @ESEMCE:

            the same part

            The mystery deepens…

            ALDI, "Good Different"

Maybe they use a different part?

          • @ESEMCE: Strange! Can they cap speed or anything else to explain this slowness?
Definitely did not have this issue with Aldi.
            I think I'll try Boost.

@Ozgday: It's all the same speed cap on Telstra Wholesale AFAIK.
Could just be a tower down for maintenance or something random today.

            • @Ozgday: Maybe telstra has different bandwidth allocations for different MVNOs that the public doesn’t know about. For example, Lycamobile's infamous 4g speeds even though they're also telstra wholesale

@shxhshzhz: Seems highly unlikely as otherwise someone probably would have noticed and commented over the many years of Woolies mobile operation.

        • Why you being so nice ? You are not jv.
I saw your post and I expect you trolling the other guy. Can you please be yourself again.

But people will beg to differ here as well. Many posts using Telstra vs boost same phones, different signal qualities.

          • +2

            @Geoff01:

            different signal qualities.

            that's rubbish.

Same tower, same phone, same location, same carrier, same time = same signal strength.

@jv: Presumably same network but plenty of comments about getting worse reception on boost than on Telstra. Wouldn't surprise me

  • Must have taken ages to upload the video at those speeds.

    • It did! I had to keep touching the screen so the phone wouldn't go to sleep. Lol.

  • Speeds are capped at 100mbps and when it uses "part" of telstra's network. It's literally 99.7% or something ridiculous.

It is restricted to roughly duplicate Optus' coverage by population, if not geographic land area.

Optus' land coverage area is something like 1m sq Km smaller than Full Telstra coverage. ergo Telkstra Wholesale Land coverage area is roughly 1m sq Km smaller as well. The difference is quite dramatic!

  • Have you got any VPN or DNS apps that might be causing the issue?

Every support team will tell you to do a factory reset on your phone which is a pain, but then everything starts from scratch config wise.

Otherwise have you tested the SIM in a friends phone?

      No VPN or DNS apps
Good idea. I have my old pixel in a drawer, might charge the battery and test.

      • Let us know how you get on. Can sometimes be a dodgey sim card too.

  • For those that say Boost is better it doesn’t work for me in my Sydney office building. Doesn’t seem to matter who you are with, they all have flaws.

    • Yeah I would expect black spots in the cbd, or on a train.

  • There are a number of background settings that come from the network itself, so resetting the network settings to factory is a good early step. You might also want to use speedtest.net or the app to get some metrics on the issue. I’ve found the Woolies support to be good, but slow to respond.

I moved from Aldi to Woolworths Mobile 8 months ago, to get the once a month 10% off my shopping.
No change in speed or reception issues as they both use Telstra.
If anything, looking Woolies is a bit faster, at consistent 60 Mbps download.
Must be your settings or maintenance on towers

  • No issues with Woolies eSIM on my phone.

I am with ALDI mobile. I received and made phone calls and text messages and used data from isolated parts of South Australia, along the Murray River and in rural Tasmania. I was impressed with the coverage (part of Telstra network). I have never had any problem with coverage .

  • Something else is going on here as im in a East Gippsland town right on the edge of a black spot.

My son had Aldi sim he now has Woolworths sim. The Aldi sim would lose service nearly 3 klms before the Woolworths sim does and he has noticed better speeds.

I am with telstra and i can get better reception usually
but depends on which direction we are heading in sometimes we lose service about the same time others he may drop out before my phone.

    • Same handsets? Same day, time and weather conditions?
If not then it's not a direct comparison.

  • Do you live SOR Perth? So far the worst network coverage experience
