  • "Imported from New Zealand, Manuka Doctor Manuka Honey is 100% Certified true Manuka Honey that is 100+ MGO Certified"

So not 100% certified true Australian Manuka Honey then?

Isn't Manuka originally a NZ region name? Similar to champagne from France.

So it would be different to Australian Manuka (which isn't based on region, but on the Bee)

Not bee specific, tree specific :)

        • ah! learn something new everyday!

    • No, the Manuka tree is very common in NewZealand, and quite uncommon in Australia despite being native ( it's purely coastal).
Being '100+ MGO Certified' is the important part.

It's one of those products where if you LIVE in NZ, you're probably eating it even if you don't know.
Sort of like how a shockingly large percentage of Australian beef is Wagyu, even if its coles brand; but you pay more when they brand it as such.

      • Errm not purely coastal in Tassie, which last I heard is still part of Australia. I've seen it growing everywhere there. According to this study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9029099/#:~:tex… : "Leptospermum scoparium is typically a medium-sized shrub, but its habit may range from a semi-prostrate shrub (<1 m) to a tree up to 12 m tall [13,20]. It naturally occurs in a wide variety of habitats, including heaths, sedgelands, and woodlands, and in sites from sea level to approximately 1000 m in altitude [24]."

And last I heard Manuka honey isn't solely produced in NZ, nor do they have exclusive rights over the name 'Manuka', despite what the NZ honey industry would like to claim: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/may/22/new-zealand-lo…

        • Yeah, tasmania breaks a lot of rules because of its more unique climate.

That's where you're wrong. The word "Mānuka" is a Māori word for the same tree "Tea Tree" (Melaleuca alternifolia) used for over 600yrs by the Māori people. For structures, weapons, medicine, tea, and yes honey. Over the years through a lot of advertising and promotion now the entire world knows of the high MGO of Mānuka honey from Aotearoa (New Zealand) and pays top dollar for it. Australia has the same species of tree, yes. But if it was to be authentic "Australian mānuka honey" it should be called "Australian Tea Tree Honey" because last I checked. Australia doesn't speak Te Reo Māori.
Simple case of riding on the coat tails
Of another countries work and name. They took NZ to court and won. Because they dropped the macron on the ā of mānuka. To Manuka. Spelt and pronounced incorrectly Manewqar. Where it is actually Maarnukah.
It's like yes, Aus and NZ both play rugby. But it will never be the Australian All blacks. 👍
