Best Barbers in Melbourne -Under $30

Hi,

Anybody recommend a "value" barber in Melbourne CBD/southern suburbs. I live in Glen Huntly so anywhere between here and the city is fine. I have a fairly basic haircut, normally a 0.5 fade and just cut and thin out the thick mop on top.

Does anyone recommend/use a barber in these areas for ideally sub $30? I was going to BIBA academy which was fine as it was only $15 but they've gone to $25 and it takes a long time. 90 minutes for my most recent, I don't mind waiting if I'm significantly saving but for the sake of another $5-15 I would rather be in/out in the usual 30/40 mins.

I think you will struggle for sub-$30 and get a good cut / service. Inflation is pushing all prices up.

    • Mainly interest if there is anything around that price, doesn't have to definitely be under $30. I'm happy to pay $30-$40 if there was one highly recommended.

Depends where you are in the CBD, but Rocket has always been good (and I think you can still partake in a free beer). Plus you can book online.

        • I can get anywhere in the CBD fairly easily, will check them out. Thanks!

you probably need to see those (predominately) Asian run / operated quick barber places - usually you buy a ticket and wait for it to be called up but its usually quite quick.

im in QLD but there is a local one of these that does a zero fade (clippers) for $30. The actual finish is really hit and miss though eg poor blending.

Contact your local TAFE's and see if any students need models for hairdressing/barbering - this Facebook Group may be helpful too.

I pay $10 for my cuts. They are generally done by 3rd of 4th year apprentices who work in salons/barber shops and just need to do them in front of a teacher to be ticked off. Takes about 60 minutes.

  • Even barbers in the west are $35+

  • I have a fairly basic haircut, normally a 0.5 fade and just cut and thin out the thick mop on top.

If that's all you need, buy a good pair of clippers and get a mate/spouse to do it for you.

There are a couple cheap ones on Elizabeth St near A'Beckett St in the city, can't say they are great because never used them. Definitely cheap tho, was too scared to try. Google map then call and ask about the price. They were around $15 before the pandemic, wouldn't have gone up that much.

    • I think that's more for a standard cut and not a fade and cut. And their are surcharges on weekends.

      • I don't know what these means sorry, do not use hair dressers too often myself. Just given them a call and find out either way.

  • Should be able to pick up some Wahl clippers for <$30

    • <$30

    pick one

    • The best of those <$30. I'm not expecting a free beer and to be pampered

    • I think this comment is 100% accurate.
Probably cheaper in the suburbs 10km+ away from the city where rents are lower and people not generally as wealthy. But still, very much a get what you pay situation.

      • Yeah most likely will be cheaper further out so suburbs like Caulfield, Carnegie, St kilda etc are easy enough to get to. Problem is I don't know these suburban suburbs very well which is why I'm looking for recommendations if anybody has a tip

        • I'd potentially try Northern or Western suburbs of Melbourne? I'm thinking much further out than St. Kilda and whole Bayside is pretty expensive.
          Reservoir, Footscray, Glenroy, Sunshine. Etc.

Might not be worth it to save $10-20?

  • Bonnici Ripponlea. You can take a bus most of the way. Including bus fare, change from $30.

  • Anyone see the barber shops along William St near the courts? Massive shops but hardly anyone in there. Wonder how they stay afloat.

Whilst we’re on this topic, I'm genuinely curious how inflation is affecting a barber who works from home? There is one particular barber in Melbourne who charges $150/h for a haircut and beard lmfao. Is this an actual piss take or? Am I the only one who thinks this is f’ing scam? Barbers think they’re tattoo artists now charging whatever they please. My barber charges half the price and does just as good a job if not better. If you’re paying these thieves $150/h, you’re part of the problem. It’s not a “rich flex” bro, it’s called being a simp.

    • There is an easy solution though.

  • Hey mate. I’m a mobile barber on airtasker and will come to you. I work in a barber shop during the day but have a group of clients who prefer haircuts done at home after hours (usually on a Wednesday afternoon, evenings or weekends). If you’re a regular, I’m doing them for around $30 cash per cut as long as you are flexible with times etc. If you log onto airtasker, you can check out my reviews. Cheers mate. James.
