Anybody Get a Letter That Their Electricity Price Is Increasing 30%?

Alinta sent a nice little letter this week that their peak rate is increasing 30%. No justification or reasoning, just going up 30% while the feed in tariff stays the same. Also noticed that my car insurance has jumped from the regular 6% yearly increases to over 20% increase this year. With the cost of food and now interest rates increasing considerably, how are people expected to survive when wages are not rising anywhere near the same rate?

AGL is jacking its Qld Energex rates 22-33% for usage/demand on Solar Savers effective 1 July.

Time for Parliament to stop bickering about useless stuff and focus on cost of living.

    • +5

Someone needs to pick up on how Parliament addresses cost of living issues i.e. their solution is to effectively gift billions to AGL/Origin/Translink etc through rebates.

        But, but, but, free markets…

        • muh privatisation will decrease prices

          • +5

@MrThing: muh, green energy is cheaper than the rest…the fever dream of the doomsday cult.

        • +5

          "But, but, but, free markets…"

TOTALLY IMAGINARY "FREE MARKETS" … we're being force fed UNRELIABLE, EXPENSIVE RUINABLES to SUPPOSEDLY "SAVE THE PLANET"
… even though everyone knows that this KRAP will make absolutely no difference to climate
… maybe an INSIGNIFICANT 0.1ºC global cooling in 100 years … ONLY if the rest of the world is stupid enough to follow this insanity.

Sacrificing virgins at rthe altar of the new age global warming religious cult would have been more effective!

Even chanting prayers such to GAIA would have more effect on climate …

          Ruinables EFFECTS:
PRIMARY EFFECT: Mass flying critter kill [INCL. BEES]
          SECONDARY EFFECT: Mass energy poverty
TERTIARY EFFECT: HIGHLY SPECULATIVE Infinitesimal global cooling in 100yrs

“Christians look to the Second Coming, Marxists look to the collapse of capitalism, with the same mixture of fear and longing … The discovery of global warming filled a gap in the canon … and provides justification for the link between the sins of our past and the catastrophe of our future.”

LMAO AGL - good too see Woke MCB is really bring those price down with green energy like he said he would

    • Got same email, also in QLD :) 33% for me

      • +5

Nectr was offering a 12 month fixed rate deal at essentially current usage rates - it may pay you to lock in current rates for 12 months - but, as always, do the maths carefully. Their feed in tariff is not great.

        • +1

They sent me the email then retracted it lol So confused.

          • +1

@Alley Cat: Same, particularly as the initial offer was a 20% discount on current rates

You can thank the government for this, handing out free money was never going to end well.

Just move into a share house, sell your car and use public transport.

    • +7

…i hear foodbanks are very fashionable lately?

    • +13

And Vote yes on the Voice. Because thats how our politicians are using their time and our money..

    • handing out free money was never going to end well.

      100%

But I don't know if they had any other choice…

      • +5

I wouldn't let them off so easy. There were numerous ways to handle things at the time. Many choices to be made. Things could have been handled a lot differently.

      • +13

Of course they did. There was no reason to double jobseeker. There was no reason to give out money for jobkeeper to businesses who made record profits, and have no means of clawing it back. Stupid things like homebuilder grant, which not only gave out free money, buy also increased the cost of housing overnight.

        • +8

we are still paying for the inflated house prices and building costs now from homebuilder

jobkeeper should have been an opportunity for the gov to buy equity stakes in every publicly listed company it gave money too and the only way the company could claw back the equity the gov had in the business was to pay back the money with interest…….ye neh, like us plebs have to do with banks

      • They certainly did have other choice.

Government funded loans similar to hecs would’ve been an ideal start…..

use food banks, sleep in a sleeping bag, eat bread and water, shower in the local swimming pool

Isn't this exactly what Philip Lowe said? Get a flatmate? What an absolute garbage human being, probably sitting on a dozen investment properties.

      • +3

Correct, and correct. Because of the government's terrible handling of finances, you are now expected to live with 2 oth t families in a 2 bedroom apartment. Just fight over who sleeps in the kitchen.

china and russia spec living arrangements

      • +15

I don’t think what he said was bad at all. He’s also admitted he only owns a PPOR as well. All the things he suggested were ways to improve one’s cashflow, even if it is a hard pill to swallow.

Australians have become really soft these days IMO. Expecting their lives to be forever sunshine and rainbows, borrowing silly amounts to buy a property following the market like sheep, expecting to become millionaires overnight through investing in property and doing nothing to pay it off (because the tenant is the one who pays it off) and even claiming tax deductions in the process. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

There are many people you should blame for why Australians can’t handle anymore rate rises and it’s not Philip Lowe. We live in a backwards world if people are so weak and entitled they can’t get a second job or rent out a spare room or move into a share house. People don’t know the definition of hard if they think these things are hard things to do.

  • Go with Ergon!
They discriminate so be excentric and save!

  • Not just Alinta mate. Every retailer is gonna hike the prices.

For VIC, most retailers will hike the prices in August.

Anybody Get a Letter That Their Electricity Price Is Increasing 30%?

Nope, they stopped sending me letters ages ago when I opted out of paper mail. It contributes to Climate Change.

I thought high coal prices caused high energy prices like all the politicians said

coal price now is about 1/4 what it was about 1 year ago but power prices go up 30%, must be greed"flation" again, better raise the interest rates

    • +4

But the government stopped the coal mining to build renewable energy. Now they are also stopped natural gas, didn't that use to be the cheap heating a cooking alternative to electricity?

      • +7

either way, we have dun goofed ourselves

shit loads of coal, shit loads of gas, shit loads of sun

but somehow we fuked it up

        woooo privatisation

coal price now is about 1/4 what it was about 1 year ago but power prices go up 30%, must be greed"flation" again

      or Albo's policies.

  • +13

Closing power stations isnt going to make things cheaper when there is no viable solution in place to replace it…. But it keeps the brain dead happy thinking they are all fluffy and clean
Bend over and buy KY in 20ltr drums.

  • I've had this 3 months earlier. Yes it was on gas but I am sure will be a matter of time before I'll get the electricity one.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/765830

  • I have a battery and don't use much (if any) peak power.

Those have that recieved these letters, are the increases to:
    1) Peak rates
    2) All rates
    3) Daily charge?

If its just the peak rates, then for me it's happy days.

    • +1

I realyl want a battery but the ROI is far too long.

      • +1

Yeah mine was about 8-9 years payback time.

However, with every burst of inflation, and every time electricity prices go up, that payback time shortens. I reckon i'll be able to look back at a payback period of about 5-6 years at this rate.

        • What was your battery and initial overlay? Thanks.

    • +1

      All of the above.

    • -2

lend me 16k for a battery plz mr rich

  • +4

Yet another way that renters and apartment living people get shafted.

If you can get solar, good on you, but if you rent you're stuck spending more and more money until you have nothing left.

But hey, the rich got theirs.

    • +1

solar is great, but without a battery its benefit is limited

most of peoples power useage in a normal family household is 6am - 9am and 3pm - 8pm from my own first hand experience

sun aint generating bulk kwh in those time frames

ovens, heating, cooling all used during that no sun time frame use heaps of power

      • Not completely true. I haven't had a bill since I installed it 4 years ago. PURE Profit $1300 so far.

It does depend on a few factors though.

        • +2

You’ll find it won’t stay that way.

8 years ago we never had bills either. We now have bills 3 quarters of the year.

Once the feed in tariffs drop and buy rates/daily charges increase, you’ll find that profit you’re making will diminish fairly quickly.

          • +1

@Extreme: Yes unfortunately profits are dwindling.I used to get 11c FIT now 8c. :(

          • @Extreme: Maybe I don't know. Here is a screen shot of my credits. So far never had to pay.

            https://ibb.co/rMtJb71

I suppose the credits are going down. This tends to happen in Winter though. Business picks up in summer.

Note I made a withdrawal of cold hard cash last year so that's why it has lessened.

    • Dude you can get one of them large plug in batteries and charge the sucker during off peak….. Do try it.

      • Probably won't work in an apartment block built in the 80s you reckon?

  • +5

The price of living is going up but wages are not increasing at the same rate. Yet when people ask for wages to match the inflation rate the RBA and others say that the workforce has to increase productivity.

Either way people are worse off and now have a lower standard of living than a year ago. And it looks like things are going to get worse.

The part I don't understand is that come the next election people will continue to vote for the same 3 parties that caused this situation.
If we want genuine change and genuine representation we need to vote differently.

    • Who should we vote for?

      • +1

Doesn't matter. It just switches between LAbour and Liberal every few years. They generally reverse each others policies to an extend. But there is some balance to the force.

I for one want Australian sex party to win but no chance in a two party duopoly which limits everyones options.

        • +1

          Doesn't matter.

Yours and everyone elses vote does matter!

Everyone gets to choose if they use it wisely or not.

          • @Bystander: Try and see. I don't think our votes matter. Next it will be liberal or labour. Definitely nothing else.

            • @Naigrabzo: Yes, the next election will most likely result in either a Liberal or Labor government.

What I'm saying though is that if anyone votes for the major 3 parties then they lose the right to complain if they want something different to what we've been getting in the past.

              • @Bystander: This is true. But doesn't change the facts. We don't really have a choice. :P democrazy FTW!

      • The minor parties have been deplatformed by the media. And when they are mentioned there is a lot of misinformation and disinformation. Because of this people need to do their own research to find a party that best fits their ideology.

Yes, this takes time and effort when there are many other life activities/needs competing for your attention. Unfortunately most people do not do their own research and as a result the vast majority of voters are not fully informed and that is what the majors rely on.

        • Not sure what your own research looks like. For most noobs it's just facebook or Tiktok.

    • +1

Who should we vote for and what’s the solution?

      • Dunno. The system is a little broken. No matter whom you vote for, it will be either liberal or labour who will gain power. That's what I was implying.

Maybe the only solution is for us to be politicians ourselves.

  • Alinta SEQ same deal 30% on usage and 15% daily charge

  • what happened to the supply and demand mantra you guys are always pushing on here, bit different when it affects you personally.

    • +1

That isn't really what's happening here though; there are multiple governmental manipulations which are effecting supply and demand, namely bans on mining & exploration for coal/gas, pushing of renewables, subsidies provided for various things. As such, much of this change isn't supply & demand based

      • -1

there are reasons for supply and demand in every case you just cannot pick which ones you like or don't like, look at groceries there are reasons for their high costs the list goes on.

        • +3

I'm not aware of anyone picking and choosing, or indeed the relevance of your comment. The reality is that we have plenty of energy and capacity to produce it; the prices are increasing primarily due to other forces as indicated above.

Food/groceries are a completely different matter, and similarly not relevant to the current discussion.

          • -3

@RMBC: the relevance is there you just refuse to see it as you think you are right.

            • @dasa: My apologies, however I'm still missing it, and would appreciate you explaining it to me

  • +1

I & my mother are with Alinta we both received these letters this past week. Mum 40% increase myself around 30% generally. I then looked at Alinta website and looked at the 12 month contracts, the prices were much more reasonable about the 20-25% increase that has been in the news recently that the AER approved. I also shopped around while I was at it, and for our usage, Alinta still came out best with the 1/7/23 new rates. I can't understand why Alinta would send out those letters advising 30-40% increase but not offer the lower contract deals in the same letter. Gives people a heart attack. Ring Alinta and see what deal they can put you on or shop around is what i would suggest. Have Fun.

    • It’s because they want to get away with charging people more to maximise their profits where they can.

  • +5

Yes, 30% price jack up. Paying for the green utopia fairytail.

  • I got the same increase from Alinta, I'm in SE Qld on Energex. I did some research and have switched to Nectr 100% Green. It is similar cost (for me) to what Alinta HomeDeal was (pre this increase), and fixed for 12 months. I assume Nectr will soon announce a price increase, but hopefully I'm locked in at the old price.

Note, I use a spreadsheet of my historical (7 years) power usage and solar feed-in to calculate what my bills would be with different offers, which gives me an accurate comparison for me. Every household is different.

  • +2

Why are you whining, work harder, cut back on the expenses and move to a share house!

Just like how Lowe said with a smug face while earning a million/year with a half price mortgage for his multi million property. Fair go my as*

    • -2

When I moved to Sydney I lived in a share house. It allowed me to pay less rent. Sure it sucked living with grubs, but I saved money.

If people think that’s hard they need to eat some cement and harden up.

  • Got same from energy australia

    • Hello! Where abouts are you based, could you advise the rates at all :)?

  • +1

SA AGL customer (at least until December when our five year VPP deal ends).
Got the email just now re new rates and plugged the numbers into my spreadsheet. For the period since shoulder rates were introduced 11 Aug 2022 until last bill ended 14May2023 our total bill increases from 1069 to 1462, an increase of 37%.
Controlled load (off peak HWS) which accounted for 57% of our bills paid is increasing from 24c/kWh to 36 GST inclusive so I will review replacing the old storage system with heat pump again (previously long payback)
    .

  • +1

AGL, Apparently this is part of my increase:

    Current:
    General Usage c/kWh 20.966000
    T31 controlled load c/kWh 20.614000

    July 1:
    General Usage c/kWh 28.061000
    T31 controlled load c/kWh 28.138000

34.2% increase. Don't think i've ever seen controlled load MORE expensive than General Usage? What is that all about. Probably time to look in to replacing janky old hot water system given it equals ~55% of our bill.

    • yeh on agl too…pretty concerned atm.
how do you find out the new rates?

      • +1

They sent an email notifying of the upcoming rate changes

        • they sent me a 'new look bill' email but no mention of increases. wil have to see whats going on

          • +1

@franco cozzo: There have been major global energy challenges over the last year, and we’ve seen significant rises in wholesale energy costs in Australia.

We’ve now reviewed our energy rates, taking into account a range of factors including these rises, and we’re getting in touch to let you know that you’ll see some changes in your electricity rates from 1 July 2023.

We know that many people are feeling the cost-of-living pressures in Australia, so we’ve provided all the information you need to understand how these changes may affect you and point you in the right direction for support.

Here’s what you need to know

Your solar feed-in tariff will be decreasing at the same time

We’ve listed your new rates below.

    • +1

      almost 50% increase, AGL
      T11 from 21.9c to 30.5c incl
      T33 from 16.98c to 25.16c incl
Maybe now is time to rethink solar panels installation..
