Classic 8gb of ram price hook lol

      • +8

I know 8gb is fine for some users, but for how long is that going to be the case? Apps, the os and even websites becomes more demanding as time pass

        • -3

Sorry, but my experience in Education and Software Development has been that 8/256 is very usable. People just work differently.

          • @chrism238: Sorry, but as a professional Software Engineer 8GB of RAM is absolutely not enough. If you're working on large software projects opened in Visual Studio + multiple tabs in a web browser open + a communications app such as Skype, Teams + Email (Outlook), 8GB just doesn't cut it.

            • +1

@brifog: So don't buy an entry level laptop? MBA isn't targetted at software engineers, it's designed for students/officework. Get an MBP or something.

        • Good point. Given the quality build on MacBooks and the long term support you’d be looking at 4+ years.

        • +1

The day where 8GB isn’t enough to load a website will be a sad day indeed.

        • I used to run so much stuff with just 8gb. Xcode, firefox, mail, photoshop, texedit and the simulator. It ran really well. I didn't notice any speedup moving to 16gb.

      • +7

Seriously mate … It's well known apples laptops are great but a non upgradable laptop at this price point should not come with 8gb ram!

There's no need to jump to defend a $3 trillion company when it's obvious they can easily provide a better base config for the customers that got them to 3 trillion…

      • You got no idea. I have an m2 mini with 24GB ram. It was sitting on 22GB (with orange memory pressure) yesterday just having 60 chrome tabs open, a few other apps and hooked up to a studio display. I havnt rebooted for 2 months. MacOS will use memory when its there. Throw in docker desktop there goes 8GB. Even my current MBP13 has 16GB, this is just enough for day to day use.

8GB doesnt cut it, unless you only want to use a few tabs and the standard apple apps and nothing else.

BTW the unit isnt even upgrable. So consider your choices. 8GB is dead end in 2023.

        • Having 60 chrome tabs open is not the flex you think it is lol

          • +1

@croseks: Not really, its the same sites I check everyday. You know amazon pages with the item pages you want to see if they are on special :).

Either way, buy 8GB if you feel its enough. Just dont complain when you see the beachball often.

Don't forget the generous 256GB SSD

      • +2

256gb that's really 245gb and then becomes 230gb with the OS.

      • That’s the real ripoff actually. 8gb of ram is fine for some users (not me) but 256Gb SSD is a joke. Would be great if other configs prices are added to the post

        • At least you can add a portable hard drive if absolutely needed. No way to add portable ram

      • 256GB ssds are pure e-waste. I have so many from swapped out laptops because they overcharge like there's no tomorrow on the larger capacities.

    • +11

Specs are atrocious for the price.

    • That's the apple tax for ya'll

    • it's better than you think on Apple Silicon chips….also you have to remember that the Air is essentially the "Lite" range so the average user isn't doing much more than web browsing, documents & streaming.

  • +14

Cool processor but that is crazy for 8gb ram and 256gb storage

  • +1

I know it's called ProMotion 120hz hence they are on MacBook Pro's, but I really want them on all of their devices. If this 15" had 120hz display it would've been an insta cop from him ofc after the 16GB RAM upgrade (damn you Apple and your 8GB base RAM config!!!!)

  • +2

Yeah not worth it for 8gigs of ram and only 256gigs ssd. Probably won’t be able to replace the ssd when it fails also so planned obsolescence done well

    • +3

It’s SoC - system on a chip so you can’t replace anything anyway. That’s the price to pay for the amazing performance of apple silicon

  • +16

My 2012 MacBook Pro came with 8gb ram / 256ssd configuration.

    • +1

I have a macbook air from 2014 with 8GB ram / 512GB ssd. It was also a fair bit cheaper then this.

      • your 11 inch macbook air was cheaper than this?? OMG

        • +1

13.3 inch and I just checked and it was actually from 2013.

          8GB RAM / 256GB SSD on a $1900 laptop in 2023 is a joke.

    • 8gb has for some reason been the standard since around 2011, and it is genuinely mind boggling that it is still like this.

  • +5

I'm just here to be reminded about what year it is…

    • +1

      1919 delivered?

  • Hopefully the M1 drops in price

  • Did the m2 13inch go down too? It seems like the M1 definitely did. you can get it with the fast 256gb ssd stock, 16gig of ram for ~$1,500… and it will last you for years.

Apple have planned their pricing models down to a tee.

  • +1

Anyone know if the 256GB base storage is slower speed like the 13?

  • -1

Will 1 kidney be enough or will I need to search deeper? 😂

    • +1

You need to sell your heart too

      • +1

Maybe I'll wait for the refurb one then 😢

  • +8

I would recommend 14'' MacBook Pro M1 Pro with 16GB & 512SSD - currently selling at $2478 in JB Hifi without discounts. (You can wait for JB's 10% off Mac promotion or pay with discounted giftcards). Even without discounts this is a much better option over the new 15'' Air.

    • +1

I got the 13 m2 air and switched to the 14 m1 mbp before the end of the return period. 100% worth it. If I am going to use something for multiple hours in a day for at least a few years, I am spending a bit more to get something that is better in every way

    • *PS: The prices of 15'' MacBook Air with 16GB & 512 SSD configurations are: $2799 (normal), $2569 (Edu), $2467 (EDU Union)

      • What's EDU Union?

        • +1

It's some edu institutions that have corporate purchase plan with apple so they have additional discounts. The linked deal page in the OP is one of them - see the top left "AOC AU Australian Education Union Store Home". Another example is UNSW AOC store.

          • @seanyong: I suppose there's no way to get cashback with these links. But Apple gift cards would work?

    • +1

Ah shame that's not on the Apple website as I've got giftcards to use.

    • You can get the 14” MacBook Pro M1 with 10c CPU 16c GPU + 1TBSSD for $2305 currently by price beating this deal at Officeworks and paying with 10% off discounted gift cards from Coles

  • +10

    Thanks OP, bought zero

  • +1

Jeez this is a tough sell, when you spec the laptop to something that is usable eg 16mb RAM and 512gb storage it’s the same price as an M1 MBP albeit the 14 model. I’m not sure of a use case where somebody would choose the Air over a MBP when they are so similarly priced but the cleaver people at Apple obviously do.

    • Light weight and thin = road warriors and other ninjas

    • Plus increased screen real estate is useful

  • What would you need to be able to order from apple education? Is tehre some special requirements, aka an education email address?

    • Each institution has its own log in but limited checks on eligibility when just clicking through and ordering.

    • What would you need to be able to order from apple education? Is tehre some special requirements, aka an education email address?

You need money and unstoppable desire to buy. That's all.

From what I read there is a small chance of eligibility check and the order being cancelled and refunded if fail. That's the theory.
I haven't heard any proof of this happening in real life.

This laptop has ugly notch in the display. Can't buy because of that.

  • Which charger should one get?

    • Wondering the same thing

    • If you need the faster charging (0 to 50% in 30 mins) gowith 70W single charger.
If you charge multiple devices from same plug, get the dual 35W

      • If you’re charging the Mac and an iPad or iPhone, you’re only getting half the wattage each (obviously) - 17.5W.
