I have two Visa gift cards from https://ichoosegift.mycardplace.com/
But they do not have Chipset nor Paywave. It seems I can only swipe. I tried at a KFC and got declined. I also tried all online payments, Paypal, online shopping… all failed.
When you have VISA gift cards, how do you guys spend those?
This is the first time I have come across that particular type of prepaid Visa gift card.
I spend my prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift cards a number of ways, including:
Linking it to my PayPal to use at online merchants that may not otherwise prepaid gift cards.
Using it at online merchants where I know they do not care about me using a prepaid gift card as a payment method.
Using it in-person at merchants that accept magstripe payments from Visa cards (e.g. Coles, Woolworths, ALDI, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Ampol, Dan Murphy’s, First Choice Liquor, BWS, Liquorland, Officeworks, Target, Kmart, IKEA).
Here is some advice to keep in mind:
You have a prepaid Visa gift card, which means that some merchants will opt to not accept them as a payment method. This is particularly a problem when an online merchant mandates a card to have support for 3-D Secure before attempting to take payment, or will refuse to attempt to process payment from a Visa card listed as a prepaid card. That probably explains the issues you have been facing when trying to directly redeem the prepaid gift cards at a number of online merchants.
You cannot set up recurring payments on a prepaid Visa gift card. I believe this is limitation enforced by Visa themselves.
If you swipe the prepaid gift card in-person and then are asked to choose a network, select Credit, because your prepaid gift cards appear to only support the Visa network.
Are you using the PIN associated with the gift card? If you are opting to use signature verification instead (e.g. because you do not have a PIN associated with the gift card), a lot of in-person merchants will not allow you to use signature verification, largely because it is a verification method that was mostly phased out in Australia in 2014.
Is your gift card active? There is a chance that the gift card issuer has blocked your gift card.
Does your gift card have sufficient balance available to cover the cost of your purchases? Keep in mind that some merchant types will have “tolerance limits” applied to pending transactions. Have a look at this FAQ for more information.
As an aside, when I was reading through the terms and conditions, I was alarmed to see a list of post-supply fees. A lot of these fees were outlawed for most gift cards issued in Australia from 01 November 2019. Considering you have mentioned a number of transactions have been declined, I am concerned about the fact that there is a $0.15 declined transaction fee mentioned in the terms and conditions…
