Datacenter Project Manager jobs for Canadians

First time poster, please be kind.
I'm a Canadian Electrical/Electronic engineer with 12 years experience in Datacenter/Mission Critical Facilities infrastructure development. I'm just past mid 30s. I'd like to move to WA to live close to the rest of my family.

How is the market for these type of jobs in WA and rest of Australia?
How is your difficult is it for a Canadian to get a job offer? Is it a deal breaker for someone without a work permit?
What would be an appropriate/best/quickest migration process?

Thanks in advance.

  • Basic quick search doesn't show many hits in Perth vs Sydney: https://au.indeed.com/jobs?q=datacenter&l=Perth+WA

No idea the datacenter landscape in WA but have a look around similar job roles that may work and what's on offer.

Your best bet would be to try to get an internal transfer with current company if that's an option, or target the big names directly and see if they're hiring.

For visas, if you're the right person for the role and on the skilled shortage list, you'll get sponsored no problem.

Skilled shortages for various visas: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/s…

Alternatively, you can consider a PR entry stream yourself without sponsor required if meet requirements: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-li…

You'll need to do a lot reading and research to determine the best approach for your criteria personally.

You may also need to be a little.. let's say… creative… with the job roles. So instead of being a 'Project Manager' for Engineering roles, you're an "Engineering Manager" instead (which is definitely not the same thing but you'll need to make it work). Consider similar for your industry.

In Canada is it common to use grade B maple syrup on top of your waffles, or do you mostly use it as a baking ingredient?

  • Pretty difficult to get a sponsored job in IT at all, with all the layoffs/lack of growth in IT here.

The visa process is too long for most companies to bother and there's not a lot of tech industry in WA, maybe try talk to a few mining companies but otherwise Sydney would be a better option to get your foot in the door.

IT is pretty dead in Australia.

Yet I still see the Immigration Department bringing in people and creating these fake immigration visa scandals. If you were paying attention to the news, you would also realise a place where a lot of the supposed IT graduates coming to Australia is now actually banned a country/region.

There is no shortage at all. It has always been a scam.

If your math and coding is up to scratch, you can work anywhere as a trader with the amount you probably have saved up. You might want to try remote work with some of the prop trading firms if you can show you have a good track record.

If you have just been partying on your large salary and have no savings… then damn, you really are in for a struggle once you get to Australia either way.

  • No work permit != work.
How many global data centers are located in Perth? If you cannot find this out then you are SOL.
Does your US/Canadian company have any data centers in OZ? If yes have you thought about trying to transfer to OZ?
If your company does not have any data centers in OZ how about other companies you know?

In OZ Electrical engineers are NOT allowed to work on 240V hard wired cabling. To work on 240V and above in hard wired cabling you will need to get an electrical license in NSW, but WA it probably (99.9999%) has the same requirement.

I would suggest looking at indeed or seek to see what jobs are out there in OZ that you would be interested in and qualified for.

  • As mentioned already, no work permit means no work at all.

As for your particular industry, I have come across a few datacentre jobs, and they state that due to the access of sensitive data and security clearance, they can only hire Australian Citizens. These datacentres are only located on the east coast though, I don't know of any in WA area.

    I don't like your chances.
