Fake Gender Inequality in Sports

Strange how people whine that females are paid less than males, but then you look at the rules and see they are different.

State of Origin:

Women - 2 games with 2 x 35min halves

Men - 3 games with 2 x 40min halves

Tennis:

Women (2 sets out of 3)

Men (3 sets out of 5).

Sure there are other examples.

this is the "why do waiters take bottles away so fast/why can't they fill up KFC chip containers/why don't businesses understand how annual leave works" wonk, I think by this stage we need to accept holding them in frankly isn't an option

      • +3

I just wonder how long they racked their brains before deciding one sport and one tournament were enough examples to support their argument.

        • +3

It's really just the (sad) signs of an empty life. This is the sort of thing you'd be saying to your (like-minded) mates across the table, maybe after a few bevvies, when you've reached the stage of the evening when you're putting the world to rights and Fixing All The Problems.

If you don't have the mates/people interested in having that chat with you in an evening, though - well, "time to log on to that bargain forum and tell them what I reckon".

More fremdscham than schaduenfreude (thank you, Word of the Day).

        • +2

I just wonder how long they racked their brains before deciding one sport and one tournament were enough examples to support their argument.

The actual answer to this, FWIW, was they were cherry picking the simple examples where men and women have slightly-but-demonstrably different games (soccer, cricket etc, played on the same grounds, same rules etc aren't included because that's not going to help his 'argument').

Females get paid more on OF. I think guys should complain about OF pay inequality.

    • Don't the content creators set their own rates?

      • +2

He’s not talking about who charges more/less, it’s about who earns the most,

Everyone technically sets their own rates in all jobs… it doesn't mean you'll be hired/contracted for it.

I guess shorter games means fewer opportunities for ad money. Though if women's sports one day attracts 3x the number of viewers then it'll be the men paid less. Trends are weird so who knows what the far future of sports will be. I bet female beach volleyball players get paid more…

  • -2

I hope you don’t have children. If you do I’m sure they are cringing right now.

Anyhow, pretty sure the next Sam Kerr won’t come from your household!

You lot are impossible to reason with
Read his post and actually explain on how is the op discouraging female participation in sports,

We are all equal in human value and in the eyes of God, yes but you lot stretch it out to asking for equity. Which is counter intuitive to basic principles of meritocracy.

      • +5

The thing is professional women's sports do probably need to pay them proportionally higher share of ad money compared to men just to attract the talent in the first place. Every other boy in the country dreams of being a pro sportsman because it comes with fame and fortune at the top levels. The game is hard, but the lifestyle of riches and recognition is the easy life. If being a pro women's rugby player only paid 30k a year then no woman is going to give their whole life to the sport, no girl is going to gamble everything on succeeding at the sport.

A higher proportion of 10 million in ad money is still a lot less than a smaller portion of a billion in ad money, so no need to get your knickers all twisted up over it.

Gender inequality is real. It’s everywhere. Yes, it is slowly being rectified but don’t get all butthurt because ‘it’s not fair to men’

    • +3

Gender inequality is real because men and women are different.
No "decree" can make it otherwise.

      • +1

Every single human being is different, and yet we somehow manage to create systems of laws that treat them equally.

        • +2

And yet they aren’t treated equally in many ways.

          • +1

@Euphemistic: Yes, but we didn't throw our hands up at the start of the process and say "EVERYONE'S DIFFERENT, HOW COULD WE POSSIBLY HAVE A SYSTEM". Acknowledging people are different doesn't mean "no point doing anything".

We roll the sleeves up and design laws and systems to best address the situation, then we iterate and do it again as more and more cases emerge (once there's enough disabled people driving cars, we discover the need for a special disabled parking spot, etc).

      • +1

Yep. Men and women are different. There’s no news there. But they shouldn’t be paid any differently if they are doing the same job be that professional sports, teaching or concreting.

        • +2

The pay in professional sports is directly correlated to ad revenue and sponsorship.

        • The issue is if the CAN do the same job.
          Biology says they cannot.
Accordingly, different genders(there are only two) should not be competing against another.

          • @Leadfoot6: Bringing out the outdated opinions again.

The chromosome that determines what genitals you get doesn’t always match the amount of testosterone or oestrogen that you body produces. There are plenty of women that are physically more capable than a some men. Just because the strongest/fastest tend to be male in appearance doesn’t mean that only men can do ‘hard work’.

If you can do the job, you should get paid the same.

            • @Euphemistic: I am entitled to my opinions.
You are ALWAYS unable to accept that.
Furthermore, my opinions are backed up by longer and more academically qualified experience than yours.

              • @Leadfoot6: Yea. You are entitled to your opinions. Doesn’t make them right. And I don’t have to accept your opinions either, I accept your right to hold your opinions, and I have the right to call them outdated when they are. Could just be that the academia that backs your opinion is decades old and made by biased people.

I know for a fact that there are plenty of women that are stronger, faster than the average male. Go enter yourself in some sports events against the best of them and see how superior your male genes are.

                • +1

@Euphemistic: The qualifications that I obtained included statistics as part of my degree.
Any viewing of statistics comparing male v female strength and displayed on a normal distribution curve:
                  https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&q=normal+distribu…
                  https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&q=male+v+female+s…

will display THE UNDENIABLE FACT that men are, on average, stronger than females.
Sure, there are plenty of women that could outperform me in sports, but partly because I am in my 60's now and partly because my motor racing and flying days are well behind me, I don't bother to exercise any more.
But I can still lift a gearbox, for example, that would be beyond the strength of MOST women.
When I was in my prime, and doing 2 hours of solid gym work per day(1 before/1 hour after work), I could have lifted a much BIGGER 'box.

                  Here is a convenient expose:

"Do average men and women have equal strengths, physically […..]? Is it a myth that an average men is stronger than an average women?

The average woman has 52% of the upper body strength and 66% of the lower body strength of the average man. Overall, the average woman is stronger than 2.5% of men, and the average man is stronger than 97.5% of women."

                  https://www.quora.com/Do-average-men-and-women-have-equal-st…

Only those who are facing intellectual challenges would suggest otherwise.

Once again, you are displaying strong evidence that you might fall into this category.

It is sad how adherence to leftist ideology can have such a detrimental effect on the ability to reason.

                  • +1

@Leadfoot6: Oh no. Numbers say women are different. Doesn’t mean that women should be paid less. Means that they may choose different roles to suit their INDIVIDUAL strengths - be that lifting stuff or measuring microbes or managing a circus.

I love how you trot out the ‘leftist ideology’ phrase which to me just indicates that the ability to reason has been thrown out because everything is ‘woke’

                    • @Euphemistic: Your posts comply with "leftist ideology" quite often, so my response to your post(s) in this instance is quite appropriate.

P.S. Is there a "World Series Measuring Microbes" event on TV that I was unaware of?

The thinking behind the subsidisation of women's leagues is that it's an investment which will pay off in time. Doesn't bother me - it's not my money.

  • Has nothing to do with game length or amount of work. All elite sports require an incredible amount of work and dedication. Just comes down to how much revenue that sport generates, which in turn determines how money is available for player salaries. In general women's sports are just not as lucrative as less people watch them.

    Culture wars, yawn

Anyway weekend project replace shocks on my Kia with Bilsteins B4s

    What is everyone else doing?

    • +1

I've been really getting into making burgers atm. Grind my own mince and everything. My hot tip, Breadtop make the best burger buns I've tried so far by a pretty big margin, they're special order though so you need to give em a call the day before.

      • +1

owww burgers, was thinking about making my own meats. Is its difficult to pull off?

Currently using Coles Wagu ones which I dont mind, the Habenero ones I like and will see discounted often. Add Jalpenos too for extra ring of fire effect

Will look at Bread top then, is it Brioche bread? With the bread hipster trick I used when taking off the meats, toast bread on grill if you dont already.

        • +2

Breadtop bun is a milk bun, for a long time I was on the Aldi brioche but they're a little too sweat and all that sugar means the window between perfectly toasted and black as OPs soul is like 2 milliseconds. The Breadtop bun is made to order too so it's suuuper fresh and pillowy but with a nice chew on the crust.

Grinding the meat is simple but I have a Kitchenaid with the grinder attachment. A little bit more effort but it's pretty fun, just cube up the meat throw it in the freezer for about half hour with the grinder then mine it all up. Lets you mix things up a bit as far as grind mix goes, really want to try throwing some bacon fat in. What I do is I'll cruise my local IGA and pick up some chuck steaks whenever they get marked down then cube it and vac seal in a flat shape, means I can chuck it from the freezer into the fridge and it'll defrost enough in a couple hours to throw in the grinder.

          • +1

@Cheaplikethebird: That sounds great, made me more motivated to try both! I tried the Aldi brioche and yeah too sweet for my liking, made little sense on a burger TBH

PS. LOL@ soul, we can all learn something new and fun rather than take the bait on culture war $hitposts online or media. Looking forward to slapping in Bilstein shocks to my Kia, just need to bolts for the aftermarket strut tops.

      • Talk mincers to me. What's a good starter mincer to get?

        • I have the metal grinder attachment for the kitchenaid which goes great but I've heard the Kenwood ones are the ones to get if you don't have a Kitchenaid.

Bought a mate who is a massive witcher fan and figurine painter the witcher board game. Backed it on kickstarter 2 years ago and it's finally here, dropping it off to him this weekend. Can't wait to see the look of excitement on his face.

      • Thats nice of you, I'm sure he will love it.

        Still haven't finished witcher 3 after 120hrs >.<

  • Helen Reddy has clearly left the OPs building.

  • It disappoints me to see "men's" sports promoted so heavily to women.

Testosterone makes men bigger, with more muscle and more power. Especially in the upper body, which is what makes the best tennis player. The fact that they have a women's category that men (and even in some cases men who want to be women) are not allowed to compete in in the sports where those are the attributes that make you a winner is a tacit admission that women will never be equal to men in them.

There are plenty of things women are at least equal to men at. It is sad that they have been suckered into getting into sports where they can never compete on equal terms to be the best at. That they have to be given their own category to compete in that excludes the best.

And it just makes it doubly sad that so many girls are encouraged to train and train and train to develop boy-like lean muscled bodies so that they are the best they can be at sports that reward young men's bodies, and lose the teenage years when they would have gotten the most enjoyment in their lives from having a young woman's body.

This whole push to gets girls into boys' sports seems anti-feminist because it tells girls to get involved and enthusiastic about something they can't ever be equal to the best at. And giving them equal money, when they aren't, to encourage that involvement and enthusiasm and promote the idea they are, just seems like adding insult to injury.

    • +3

Sure, but why does Australia bother to have basketball teams when the American teams are clearly better?

This push to get Australians playing basketball when they clearly can't be the best is a waste of time - wouldn't we all just have a better time not trying to compete with them, enjoy living our Australian lives? What's the point of wasting enthusiasm and involvement in our sub-par category?

      • Because (a) we 'aspire' to be America, and (b) by looking sub-par we make them look better.
and (c) it paves the way for the rest of the Americanisation of our broader society. (The govt/sovereignty part of the process has ended,y'all.)

  • +1

People get paid depending on how much money they generate. They generate money by things like ticket sales, views, advertising, sponsorships and endorsements.

  • We got biological men competing in women sports these days to even it up….

Lmao worlds so stuffed blame the left wing extremist in the media and stupid influence from The USA

    • the only influence from the USA is your moral panic - trying thinking for yourself before you start blaming extremists, yeah?

  • +1

It's just like how movie tickets are based on how long the movie is and test match cricketers get paid loads more than IPL players because it goes longer and requires far more endurance. Oh wait…

Prize money of sport events is a fraction of the revenue in running the whole event and has absolutely nothing to do with the particular skill level or length of the game. The salary for state of origin games are sweet (profanity) all in terms of contracted payments for being part of the team and more a token payment for competing in the state of origin at all.

It always blows my mind how much people with seemingly zero interest in sport suddenly are fascinated by it when it comes to gender related questions. Almost like they are more interested in self righteous trolling than actually caring about the sport.

  • I think that womens cricket is better than mens cricket.

    • All cricket is boring

  • -2

I predict men will get less $$ in this sport>

    https://tinyurl.com/seriousWomenSort

  • Theres a difference between inequality and it just being a difference. Does the difference in game length negatively impact men? You can have a difference and it create inequality or you can have a difference that doesn't. That's where the distinction should be.

  • Imagine AFLW got paid the same as AFL players . Basically the AFL players would lose income compensating the AFLW . It should be free market based on the sport ratings . The grand slams tennis where there is equal pay the men are definitely doing this scenario,
