Beware of Penta (Computers Store)

After my experience with Penta I will never return there no matter how cheap their products. They sold me a faulty laptop saying it was brand new. The void sticker was already torn, but they assured me that it was torn due to the 'sliding of boxes in the storeroom'. when I requested that I get a different box, the worker said 'sure' because he knew there was more stock in the back. As he entered the back of the store, he spoke Indian to another worker. When he came back out, he said that the laptop I had was the last one they had in stock. Clearly he was lying, but I couldn't resist a bargain. Stupidly, I bought it.

Turned out that the laptop had a faulty dvd drive. When I returned it to the store they refused to accept returns. After more calls and foul language from the Penta worker, they blocked my number. I got my friend to call them on my behalf (he's a lawyer) and started threatening Penta about Fair Trading. They finally accepted the return for a full refund.

  • what sort of laptop and the price?

    • Do you work for Penta ?

      • no, I'm just curious.

there is a 98 post thread on whirlpool which says the same thing again and again - which is - go to the shop and only buy what they have in stock then and there, otherwise you will be waiting for the product (a few days to a week) and they can't give you and exact in-store delivery time.

underlying message is - great prices, customer service is usually meh but they come through in the end.

No one said that they had been left out of pocket, just that it was a crap experience when things went awry.

Yea try and get OW or other to pricematch instead. I've never bought from Penta simply because they never have any items in stock despite advertising they do.

Stores must have reasonable level of stock for items listed on catalogue or ads. If not it will be illegal.

Never buy from them full stop

Well said, I just wanted to put it out there to save other people from having to go through the same strife.

Never heard of them; perhaps for good reason too.

What stands out to me is the OP stated: "Clearly he was lying, but I couldn't resist a bargain. Stupidly, I bought it."

Why on earth would anyone part with money for an item that looked dodgy from a store and people that seemed dodgy???

Lesson: Stupidity and greed often lead to pain and suffering. Buyer beware.

    • I knew I was getting a product that had already been open but I didn't expect any issues with the laptop. I've saved $100's buying referbs before and they've worked fine.
      I couldn't agree more, lesson learnt :)

At least he's not in denial about it, that would be way worse.

  • Bought from them before, orders might take a while (2 weeks for mine) but got it about $400 cheaper than elsewhere, this was in 2010 though

I bought a HP ethernet switch from Penta last year. I paid online (it said thy had stock) and opted to pickup in store.

I got an email from them an hour later saying my order had been processed and my switch was ready to be picked up.

So I walked over there (with a print of the email), first they couldn't find my order, then they found it (and they had charged my CC), but then they aid they didn't have any in stock.

They said they'd get it in the next day.

So next day, I rang - yes we have it in now, I walk over there but they don't have it.

Long story short, they tell lies like their business depends on it - but I did get my switch 2 weeks later.

Definitely avoid Penta at all costs.

  • no no. dont avoid penta. learn from your mistakes. check on their website as they have good prices. then search for somewhere else that has the same model and make them price match. :) that way, good price good stuff, everyones happy. no ones pissed. end of story.

  • Oh wow I seriously cannot believe they're still operating. I learnt my lesson agesssss ago lol

    • They made huge money by doing 'their style' of business and growing bigger and bigger. It proves all you need to have to be a rich man is thick skin.

  • lol looks like they dont have a return policy….

  • Terrible company. I've been burnt by them in the past, and have just been burnt again in the last two weeks. They assured me they had stock of the product I was after, so money was transferred. 2 weeks later I get an email saying they "missed out" on the stock (despite saying it was in stock). AVOID.

The Penta Group and associated companies are a bunch of liars.
Statements made on their websites can not be substantiated and in some cases are total mis-representations. A number of complaints have been made against these companies about non supply of goods, not answering emails, rudeness on the phone, outright lying on the phone (when you can actually talk to somebody) unwilling to cancel orders and refund money when they can't supply.

I have identified the following websites as being associated with penta group..
