Anybody Remember The PENNYTEL VoIP Plan? Going…., Going…. Gone!

This used to be a great VOIP SIP service back about 10-15 years ago. It would give you free unlimited calls to 80 countries for just $5 per month. After some years PENNYTEL was bought out by mynetfone and continued the same plan for grandfathered PENNYTEL users. Then VONEX bought mynetfone out which is where it sits today.

I recently received and email from VONEX saying that they were essentially killing off this great plan by migrating everybody on the plan (called PT freedom) to a new VONEX plan, called PT Loyalty!! But GONE are all the goodies that were in previous plans. You now have to pay for every call to anywhere. No more free calls to anywhere.

Has anybody else been caught up in this “enhancement” also?

    I was on the Whirlpool plan which had no on-going costs but you paid for all outgoing calls. I rarely used it but kept it since it was such a good deal and was going to hook a VOIP land-line up to it. Now t it's $5 a month through Vonex so time to kill it off.

      Apparently Crazytel is now the new hot favourite?

        Switchblade88: thanks for the pointer.. Crazytel looks crazy!!! $0 per month!! - crazy!! And about 1cent per minute to most countries we call.

      I think Viber is something totally different. But requires both sides of call to have Viber. No good for calling say business numbers which you can do on the PENNYTEL VOIP service!!

    Pennytel brings back memories. I even bought a dedicated SIP phone!
    Zyzel made such a phone in Taiwan. I still got the phone and remember how I had to get into my modem to open a port.
    For a while we used it all the time until many immitators offered free services for 3 or 6 months so we let it lapse. One service would offer free first 30 secs and the sheer ammount of ferals trying to tell you in 30 seconds what normally woluld take 5 minutes.
    Just like Napster, all good things came to an end.

    I've modded my dial plan to put a block on all outgoing calls via Vonex until I can see what they are doing. I can't log onto their portal yet. They seem to have stuffed it up. It's no big deal as we both have Aldi mobile which gives us heaps of untimed calls.
