WebOS from Bad to Worse

LG has been pushing out updates to webOS at a rapid rate recently and I swear that every single time they do it gets worse, for me anyway. I don't know how they manage it. Quite an achievement.

I find that almost all OS that comes preloaded on Smart TV are garbage. You're better off with an external media player such as a Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Nvidia Shield, etc.

    • Agree. the fact that i buy a $1500 tv and a decade later youtube stops working reliably is terrible.
I'm never buying a new tv again and i'll go down the path of a "set-top-box" like those you have mentioned

The wifi on it died earlier this year and i've had to reconfigure my network so i can put an ethernet cable to the tv. Shame shame!

Even the OS built into the most expensive Samsung TVs isn't as good as Apple TV, though they do have some very cool tricks with the remote control.

    • Second this. I have an apple tv and never have looked back.

Lucky me. my old 2014 LG tv stopped receiving updates.

  • Yup UI looks worse and runs even shitter than previously

  • B7 here and the updates have been nothing but great. What are the examples of bad updates that you've received?

    • A couple of examples.

Before update a while ago I could turn subtitles on and off from the remote by pressing home > red. Now that only works for commercial channels. If I want to turn subtitles on/off on ABC and SBS I have to make the change on a commercial channel then go back to ABC and SBS.

Until the last update the tv would start on the channel it was on when I turned it off. Now it doesn't.

I've barely noticed a difference with WebOS updates on my C9.
Mine's jailbroken to run Youtube with sponsorblock built in, recommend.

Yep - same. After rooting and turning off updates, don't need to worry about updates breaking things and making it worse. Won't get any improvements either but am happy with its current state.

      • I might have updates off too - maybe thats why it hasnt gotten worse :P

All the TV makers moving away from Android was the first mistake, WebOS, Tizen, etc are garbage in comparison.

    • How else could they have displayed all those ads that we all enjoy?!

  • agree TVs come with crap OS. become slow with age, and usage.

then stop supporting apps from play store for downloading.

Then play store apps cannot be used we update the app (app update cannot be installed due to old OS/play store requirements).

Definitely Google TV with Chromecast is the way to go

  • Marginally relevant, but either my TV or the YouTube app updated, and now if I pause a youtube video for 5-10 mins, my phone unpairs from the TV. Super annoying as it will sometimes lose the playlist, or restart a video when I repair my phone

  • Android TVs are ok if the SOC is fast enough. I had a 2015 model that was painful to use - far too slow - but a new one that is great. Has some ads on the homescreen and tries to send tons of telemetry (according to my PiHole).

Sounds like the FetchTV updates…. The most recent one just buggered the box and the interface. Slow as crap, can't find a thing!

  • I just use all my TV's as monitors and run everything directly from a Chromecast with Google TV or Chromecast with GTV and other sources through an AV receiver.

Only reason I chose Chromecast was I couldn't justify 4 x Apple TV's and didn't have much success with the only Firestick I tried. It was the lite and I had to keep restarting it so it put me off trying any others.

The included systems on any TV I have used are rubbish.
