umm…OP specifically wanted a LASER, not ink-based. I acknowledge your justification but it's arguable whether ink is cheaper than laser. OP may require laser for other (unstated) reasons.
People may disagree with me, but that price for that print economy blows many inkjets out of the water. Also, if OP wants a low cost solution, you can't really go past $200 + $150. Most colour laser multifunction centres have the potential to start around the $600 mark, with cartridges adding another $300-$400 on top. You're quite right; in an office scenario, the better print economy on laser would be justified. But from my history in retail, I ended up serving people who wanted laser for moderate personal use. I feel that this exists in the buffer zone. You're more than welcome to make a suggestion; OP doesn't have to listen to me.

I would like to make a submission for the HP Officejet 8500A. (~$200)
You get a really good duty cycle out of the carts. They use the HP 940XL inks.
From memory, that's ~2200 pages black and ~1400 pages colour (at 5% coverage).
The 4 inks come to about $140 instore retail (easily cheaper online).
I realise you're after a laser jet, but you can sometimes end up paying the cost of the printer each time you want to refill your toner carts.
My 5 cents anyway. My 8500A is still going strong, and I feel that I get good value for what I pay.
