Buying a Row of Economy Seats Vs. Biz/1st Class?

I know people who had a small band and wanted seats for their larger instruments so bought a row.

What's to stop someone from buying 3-4 seats (a row) & sleeping on the plane (one seatbelt around your middle) vs. the ridiculous 1st class prices?

Has anyone here done this?

You can book multiple seats on a flight but need to call the airline or get an agency to do it for you as needs to be coded correctly.

    e.g. https://www.qantas.com/agencyconnect/au/en/policy-and-guidel…

Most people book seats right at the back and hope it's not a full flight. Then you get the whole empty row to yourself anyway.

AirNZ offers a dedicated SkyCouch. Never tried it though.

Mind you, there are better options like mixed class flights or extended layovers as business class or a proper bed are both much nicer than economy…

Yeah, we do Skycouch when we fly to the US and it works really well with a toddler. At 5"4' across the row though (and I'm 6"4') I doubt an adult would really want a whole one to themselves. There isn't any room to stretch out you're definitely balled up.

    • I wonder if the bunkbeds on their new planes will replace the skycouch?
Hope not, skycouch is yours for the entire flight. Looks like you can rent a bed for max 4 hours - though would probably be a better 4 hours of sleep than trying to sleep across a row of seats.

It would be funny if they took your money and gave you 4 seats spread all over the aeroplane.

If you don't pick your seats it could happen!

    • Exactly my worry

Things that didn't happen. Luggage aka instruments need to be stowed in the overhead lockers or under the seat for take off/landing.

Nothing….. BUT you have to do it correctly, otherwise when those fake people don't check in, the seat becomes 'free' and can be reassigned to another person.

Some companies allow you to buy the seat next to you online like AizNZ, but in most cases you need to book 'extra' seats via the call centers that block them out so they can't be reused or at least call them post booking online to block them out for you so they don't enter the pool.

Also if you book a return ticket and you 'miss' the outgoing leg, you return ticket is cancelled, so another reason to get them marked correctly.

You clearly underestimate the size of a double bass

Not at all, hence why I said it didn't happen. No airline will let you leave a instruments just laying around aka double bass just sitting on a seat not correctly secured as claimed.

I've tried both and business/first is much more comfortable. You're still getting what you pay for - no hack here.

  • that's a lot of money just so you can lie flat in economy. try taking a $2 sleeping pill?

    • Over 2m so crushed, mate. And 10-30 hrs…
