Floodlights Recommendations Wired/Wirefree

Hi Ozb,

Hope everyone is well,

May I please ask recommendations for floodlights (to be used as a deterrent)?

I did a light google but not sure which ones to get.

I'm thinking wired ones would be better?

Thanks so much! X

  • how big is the area you are lighting up
how far do you need the light throw
is it for security or general purpose lighting (eg taking the bins out at night etc)
do you have a power point nearby / is it under cover / full exposed

    • Hi there,

      Thanks for your reply.

Roughly 300sqm, back yard is the biggest. Side gate and front door.

Definitely for security purposes. I'm going to most likely instal Eufy cameras. But thinking floodlights also would be a good option so better footage incase.

No powerpoints nearby. Some could be covered and some fully exposed.

      Thanks

Agree. Unless you enjoy constantly servicing solar lights.

You will need an electrician to wire them up. So call a few and ask for quotes. I'm sure they will have lighting suggestions for you after inspecting your property.

  • So you want motion sensors on them?

Get a sparky to give you a quote. Most sensors and floodlights will be pretty similar. It’s a well developed technology.

Alternatively, some solar powered ones are bright enough to be a deterrent and can be DIY install. I’ve used a couple and they’re ok if you are on a tight budget. I’ve got a Aldi one that’s been on the side of the house for years. Not super bright, but enough to see the bins.

Amazing what people will do for 40c worth of cans. ;)

      • I wanna make it easy for them so they don’t make a mess.

install a plug base in the roof space for ease of replacement in case they die.

  • the eufy flood light (hardwired is pretty good) if you want to flood flood teh yard with light you will likely need a fairly large light.

  • I have both wired and solar sensor lights. Wired are much brighter, you can use more high powered bulbs etc. Most solar are LED and they are fine to light up around 5m from the light source but beyond that not great. However obviously solar you can DIY install very easily and they are a lot cheaper

  • Get a Foxlight (solar one) and mount it on your roof as close to the bins (as the crow flies) as you can.

It will freak out the itinerants. And probs half your neighbours too. Maybe you tap into it and put in an isolation switch at ground level so it's just turned on as required
