Smart Wi-Fi Deadlock for Front Door

Hi All,

I’m after smart deadlock for our front new home in few weeks time.
I never used something like this before and would like the tradies to punch the keys to finish some work before we move in. It’ll be hard for me to drop off the keys and collect as we live far away.

I found the below in Amazon with raving reviews. Are there any other alternatives?

ULTRALOQ Smart Lock U-Bolt (Satin Nickel) + Bridge WiFi Adaptor, 5-in-1 Keyless Entry Door Lock with WiFi, Bluetooth, App and Keypad, Smart Door Lock Front Door, Non-Fingerprint Deadbolt Lock Edition https://amzn.asia/d/iZjoZP3

  • I would go for Samsung/Lockwood branded locks.

    • I got the Samsung a30… it’s been a game changer

      No more house keys
      No more lock outs

  • I have a Eufy- I don't have the wifi version, but I'm happy with it. $299 on Amazon a couple of years ago. Has code or thumb print, as well as back up key (this was a must for me) or you can plug in a USB powerbank to get in if the battery is low.

    • wow.. its 349 now, without fingerprint is 180

      questions:

      1. Lock and unlock remotely as you approach via Bluetooth with the eufy Security app. Works up to 70 meters away for true hands-free entry
        that feature really works?

      2. if using manual app (so take out mobile, open app, click open) how long till the door open from clicking open button ?

        1. Mine doesn't have the approach unlock, you have to go into the app and drag to unlock if you want to do it at a distance (can't say I really wanted automatic door opening like that, especially as I'm in a house that is far smaller than 70m from the front door at any point!)

        2. About 3 seconds- the servo starts up almost instantly and it takes about 2-3 seconds for the bolt to retract and the door to go bing. It works from about halfway up my drive (10ishm at a guess) but that might say more about my phone's bluetooth than the lock

No chance to leave a key with a neighbour or “under the mat”?
I’m deeply skeptical of digital locks, quite besides the possibility of unknown exploits and obsolescence, I think they look like a challenge to mischievous teens.
When I was a bored kid after school I would 100% have tried to defeat an electronic lock in an empty building.

In fairness, any kind of lock is there as a deterrent, not a guarantee. If someone wants to get in, they'll get in.

    • You can get ones that just fit over the deadbolt. You can't access it from the outside, unless you have access to the wifi it is connected to. And it works even if wifi goes out because it just sits over the deadbolt, you can still turn it manually.

actually looks good but i dont quite understand the diff. between the 3 options.

anyway, the reviews looks so so.. i will wait for a better ones, at the same price range

question: now we have 2 keys: one is deadbolt and the other one is on with handle.
if i change this then i assume i will not use the key on the handle anymore (ie keep it unlocked forever). will it safe enough?

    • The Bluetooth function doesn’t seem to work with proximity and users have reports there’s a 5 min delay. Who’s going to wait 5-10mins to open their lock?

    • I'm gonna say if someone can get through the deadbolt the knob/handle was going to do exactly squat.

After a lot of rentals with only one lock or only one key with an extra copy, having just one or the other locked has been enough for me (even living alone). Depends on your own price of mind and neighbourhood. Friend in a similar situation deadlocks every lock she owns whether she is home or not cause that is what is most comfortable for her.

      • I see. Yeah agree
I think most break-ins are not from.main door

      • Makes sense.
I guess my use case to use smart lock is to go keyless entry. Give my guests temp PIN codes to enter the house.

I only ever take my keys if I need the car/ work keys, very freeing to just be able to thumb into the door (and harder to lock myself out ;)). I have a set of guest pins. The Eufy also has an option for 'hidden' pin- the pin is 4-6 numbers but you can type 10 to hide the true pin from anyone watching/fingerprinting

  • Schlage. High quality design, high quality build.

  • I hear the thumb access is not that great for safety standards? I don’t need much of the approx open but the wifi is important.

Any links to share on the locks in the similar price range?

Do you really need wifi? It will make the lock a battery eater and worst case will allow hackers to open your door. I get that it gives you lock status away from home.

  • Are you going to be able to get this fitted as a new installation or are you resigned to retrofitting a deadlatch that's already in place?

  • I’m planning to replace the current deadlock with the smart deadlock from Amazon

    • Replacing existing is low cost and gives you a huge range of options. I know someone who has this one from Wyze
      Works great!

      • This is awesome. Is there a way I can buy through Amazon Australia? This takes me to US site.

        • Amazon US will ship this over. Wyze seems to have too much demand in the US market so they don't yet distribute direct to Australia. You'll find plenty of reviews and installation videos on YouTube. At this price you can afford to upgrade further down the road, perhaps when Matter is actually a thing.

          • @sumyungguy: So if I change my country to USA in Amazon and then ship to Australia it’ll get shipped? I haven’t done this before.
Shipping seems very expensive for Australia at the moment.

            • @justanick: You’ll need to setup an Amazon.com account. Total price including GST will be US$112.11. Amazon came to Australia in 2017 so prior to this we all shopped from Amazon.com with our addresses in Australia. Shipping ex-USA @US$22 I consider quite acceptable.

Have you checked the setup on your new front door? They often have a deadlock with integrated handle which won’t be an easy retrofit.
