    399 only

Filtered my size, only Sydney boots available. What the point of owning RMs if you don't have two tags to show off you're wearing RMs 😂

    • +9

How high do your jeans go above your ankles? Or do you wear them with shorts?

    • +4

I actually want less people to know haha. They are quality boots but seems like its a fashion statement or status symbol nowadays

      • Have been for a long time

      • Just get doc martens if you want to go against the grain not part of the herd 🦬🦬🦬

        • Docs are just another herd. And worse boots.

          • @rumblytangara: All shit right. I got some vegan leather shoes cheap for about 100$, softer out of the box but still too narrow as well to be honest.

Better wearing something more comfortable on your feet.

  • +1

    Still soooo expensive !

    • +7

Repair service makes it worth it.

  • When's the best time to buy RM's? As in during the year. Keen to try and size myself soon to grab my first pair at the sales time.

    • +4

Now is probably a good time given the weather.

Go to one of the outlets to do a size and trial. I found that I had a better fit with half a smaller than what they recommended in store.

Its well worth the price IMO.

      • Haha, I'll be moving overseas just after winter, although they won't be utilised much, if at all before I leave. Thanks for the outlet info though, I'll try and find my local.

Was just wondering when's their best sales dates. 😅

  • +3

If you're an APOD member, you're also able to get another 15% off this price. The Adelaide boots have come down to $381.65 in the cart.

    • Thanks, saved me another $70!

      • How to get this??

        • +4

          Step 1: Get APOD membership
Step 2: Get discount at RMW

        • Be eligible for something called “Australian Partners of Defence”.

No prizes for guessing the eligibility criteria.

    • Interesting, I Thought APOD was only 15% off full price items?

      • It does say that in the description, but it still worked in the cart.

    • +2

      Socks: Kathmandu $20 vouchers

      • Got one of those lying around, good idea. I normally get a lock or packing cube.

    • +8

Having to do this yearly does not support your argument very well…

  • +14

You're either into RMs or you're not.

Those who complain about the price tag clearly should stay with their Kmart shoes.

…I also sleep on a bed of RM shoes so I may be biased

    • +3

you're going from one end to another…..people can still like what's in the middle. People who like RM can still complain about the price.

      • It's a bit hard to like RMs and complain about the price at the same time… all you have to do is compare longevity.

Mine are going on 20 years now. My second pair did fail at about year 15. Wore them more when I was in a place where they were not part of some stupid corporate uniform though- pretty much stopped wearing them around Sydney.

    • +2

They’re a no brainer. My Florsheim/ aquilas are toast after 2 years or so, my RMs are 10 years old and only now need a resole

      • +3

        Aquila's are garbage.

Florsheim has better quality than Aquila's from my own experience.

        • +1

I've noticed everytime this topic comes up it's the same brands that people use as examples of being trash… sounds more like an issue with those brands than all the others in the middle :P

        • Florsheim are utter shite. Still wearing my RMs I purchased in 2014 for $250

    • +2

Also, you’re not really into RMs unless you pay for the boots with pineapples pulled out of your RM kangaroo leather wallet.

      • And work at one of the big 4

  • Very limited in sizes.

    • and styles.. comfort craftsman in chestnut are the go for most people (and or black).

  • Yeah very limited sizes but thanks for sharing

  • Are these actually that great than say…Aquila or other no brand shoe?

    • +1

Not sure about quality and durability, but the biggest difference I can see is that RMWs are whole-cut (one piece of leather makes up the entire top of the boot) whereas most cheaper alternative use multiple smaller pieces for one boot.
Make of that what you will but I can see that as a premium feature. Whether it’s enough to justify this price is subjective but still a premium feature nonetheless.

    • +1

      Aquila. lol.

    • +6

Good quality full grain leather rather than low quality semi-synthetic. Goodyear welted vs glued soles. High quality . Easily repairable and made to last vs disposable. Made in Australia vs made in China. Very different boots.

This all said there's a bunch of new Australian brands that sell essentially RM Williams look alikes that are made outside Australia and a few hundred bucks cheaper. There's also some older brands that are made in Australia like Baxter or Mongrel that are cheaper (around $350)

The whole cut thing is really more in comparison to other brands that also make high quality shoes, e.g Baxter/Mongrel/European brands

      • Back in the day I had Baxter motorcycle boots that were made in Australia. Top quality and lasted for years.

  • Any cheaper but good alternative to rm craft?

    • +1

I'm interested to check out Mongrel's riding boots. Not sure what else is made in AU?

      • +1

Yeah, I’ve been meaning to check them out too. Another option is Thursday boots, but they’re a US brand. Check out R/AustralianMFA, people love their RMW on that subreddit

    • You could check out Rossi boots. I don’t have any experience with the Kidman boot but is similar to the RMW comfort craftsman - single piece of yearling leather but made in India. RRP $399 for smooth leather or $369 for suede:

    • Redback boots

  • anyone seen the leather care/polish/cleaner/brushes RM branded on sale anywhere?

    • +3

Goes on sale every 2-3 month at the Iconic. The travel cleaning set might even be on sale at the moment might be worth a check.

      • yeah i missed the last 30% off at Iconic during click frenzy. I know they sell everything except the RM William Dual brush.

    • How often do you polish your Williams?

      • 6-12 months for polish. I condition every 3-4 months. Probably depends on weather and wear.

what's the deal with mens shoes having such a massive heel now? short guys that insecure?

    • +1

Mens shoes have always had heels. You are thinking of boys shoes.

    • Compared to all that women do to hide their flaws with makeup and clothing, short men can have an extra few cm's. I wouldn't know, I'm 8ft 3 in.

      • Yeah im tall, that's my problem with these shoes, my other dress shoes dont have such a chunky heel.

        • Sure you are

          • @lew380: found the insecure shortman

            • @geewizz: Just a question, where do you buy your t shirts from?

  • +4

    Senior Management here I come!

  • Fallen far from $300 + 2000 QFF points =\

  • -8

I got modded down for offering a tried and tested money-saving thrifty alternative?

what kind of bargain site is this, anyway?

    • +9

Because your money saving thrifty alternative appears to be buying new, cheap shoes annually instead of buying good quality shoes that routinely last 10+ years?

      • +1

As I said, I walk a lot — bush hiking, mostly, lots of rocks — and my stride is heavy on the heel.

Shoes that last ten years simply aren't being worn, or in my case are being reheeled a lot. Sometimes for free, because the heels wear fast and don't last.

I am already aware of the prevalent economic theory here, which is why I don't buy trainers, cheap or otherwise.

“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”

I'm wearing a pair of rm's most days at work for ~10 years and and the original tread is still fair. You are going through a pair every 6m? Agreed this deal isn't the best one ever, but do the maths. Buy well, buy once.

      • -2

you wear your shoes at work? behind a desk, sitting down in the office, which you drive to and from?

        shoes are made for walking.

  • Never any discounts on the Tambo boots :(

    • +1

Yeah, I need the Tambo version too. :-(

  • Too rich for my blood

  • How does the Sydney compare to comfort craftsman?

    • Looked into it, I think it'd be a fine alternative, but it has a leather sole which I don't like.

  • Genuine question for RM owners - how much do you pay for a re-sole (and how often) and how to you fix scuffed toes ?
I buy cheap boots every 2 years or so (worn 10hrs/day in an officey type environment) with the odd few km walk here and there and comfort has never really been an issue. After 2 years I've worn down the soles (I must be out of alignment because I always wear down one corner of the heel much earlier) and usually scuffed up the toes. Maybe they're not as durable as they're cheap, but I usually wait for a 50% off sale so I'm paying under $100, so it'd take me 10 years to break even on a set of RMs before I even start to factor in soles and maintenance. I'm not adverse to shelling out for a pair of RMs (on the best sale of course!) but I'm not a huge brand snob and the justification that you'll save money in the long run is one I'm struggling to quantify. Putting shoes in to get repaired seems so yesteryear…

    • +2

If cost is the only factor you're considering, you're not really going to save money. It's probs roughly the same whether you buy the cheapies every 2 years or splash out for RM's and resole every few years. But high quality shoes look nicer than cheap ones and there's also the sustainability factor too. You're generating a lot more waste buying disposable shoes. Whether or not those things matter is up to you.

      • -2

buying less long lived shoes keep the economy going and increases GDP.

I made similar points to you in this thread. and I was heavily downvoted for them.

(resole every few years? I resole every few months. because I walk)

    • If your wearing down the heels first, then you would only need the heels replaced at $55.

Prices are on the RM Williams - boot repair service: https://www.rmwilliams.com.au/footwear/boot-repair-service.h…

Its also worth considering selecting the right sole - the Dynamic Flex and Comfort soles are the ones most common, but there are also Gardener and Commando soles as well which are model dependent.

      • Most cobblers have the heels and could do on the spot for 40$, even have different brand for 15$ less (exact same quality). Wouldn't be worth sending away just for that.

  • Thanks OP for the post, been looking for a pair of RM’s on sale.

Does anyone know the difference between the Sydney boot and the Craftsman boot? It appears to me that the Sydney boot has a shorter ankle height…

    • Leather sole on the Sydney which I personally don't like

      • ok thanks. I messaged them to cancel the order

      • yeah wish i never bought the leather sole crafstmans back in the day, ~$300 from DFO but took about 6 months to break in, always the small toes copped it, slippery on the carpet and outside, hard and bad for your feet.

        • Topy sole protectors are an option - keep the sleeker look of the leather soles with a Topy to provide some wear resistance and grip

          • @sydney_kings: Yeah could have, just saying the leather sole nowhere near as comfortable or good.

  • Thanks I got the sydney boot for work.

  • Been waiting to buy R.m’s..thanks. Purchased Burnished Balmora.. Any reviews from people used/using this..

  • Is it sold out? The shoes are not available
