Travel-friendly and Versatile
For easy connectivity and file sharing on the go, the DIR-506L is ideal. Its compact design allows it to fit right in your pocket, and the rechargeable battery means you don’t even need a power outlet to share your Internet connection or create a network. You can also plug it into a powered USB port to recharge the battery. A pivoting stand allows for vertical use and folds away when you’re on-the-go. Now also with support for a USB 3G/4G modem or Smart Phone.

Share and Stream Your Files
Connect a USB storage device to your Pocket Cloud Router to create a shared storage space, making it easy to share files between computers and devices connected to your network. Plug in a USB hard drive to stream your library of videos and music to your laptop, or use a USB flash drive to share presentation files with other team members. An easy to use web interface lets you access, upload, and play files stored on your USB drive, and the SharePort™ Mobile app for mobile devices allows you to back up photos and videos stored your device. You can even customize your shared storage space by creating separate accounts to control access to the USB drive, so you can share your music with everyone but keep your personal files private.

Easy to Set Up, Easy to Use
Setting up the Pocket Cloud Router is simple. Just plug it in, connect to it wirelessly with a PC or mobile device, and follow the steps in the built-in Setup Wizard to configure the DIR-506L. It’s easy to set up and use in an instant, whenever you need it, and wherever you are.

Multiple Modes for All Your Needs
The Pocket Cloud Router features multiple wireless modes, allowing it to adapt to any situation. Router Mode shares your broadband Internet connection wirelessly; just connect it to your cable or DSL modem to provide high-speed Internet access for an entire home or office. AP Mode lets you create a private wireless network instantly, making it perfect for sharing files during business meetings. Repeater Mode extends an existing wireless network, so you can place them anywhere in your home to extend the range of your existing wireless network. Wi-Fi Hot Spot mode lets you share an Internet connection coming from a wireless hotspot. This lets you share a wireless connection at a hotel or café with all your devices.

Additionally, Repeater Mode and Wi-Fi Hot Spot Mode let you connect any device with an Ethernet port, enabling it to connect to your network wirelessly. Connect an Xbox 360® or smart TV to a DIR-506L to give them the ability to connect to your router wirelessly while extending your home’s wireless coverage at the same time.

  • This is $9… or $14 when its not on sale. Why isn't this as popular as the other ones that get posted on ozbargain for $150+. This does basically everything the other one does, except this one has a built in battery.

    • -5

I doubt it is $9 when not on sale, (unless you talking about like using $5 eBay monthly voucher if any)

They're saying it's $9 under this deal and $14 when it's not on sale.

They never said it was $9 when not on sale

(unless you talking about like using $5 eBay monthly voucher if any)

They're saying its $9 when using PWEU10 (or another code that may discount it to $9

Not sure what the (profanity) else you want me to read.

Yeah, no. This isn’t a replacement for your home router/AP.

I would like to know too, from what I can tell it can do similar things, however it's clearly an old device, only supporting n150, and there might be other implications for that, meaning it might be using some outdated standards, and the devices you linked to I believe support ddwrt. Hopefully someone else can give a better answer who uses these two devices.

          • @Jackson:

            only supporting n150

            That’s the answer. Yuck.

I've got the Slate that you linked first. It's got a VPN client and server built in (OpenVPN/Wireguard/ZeroTier), has an ad and malware (and I think adult sites) blocking DNS server, and because it runs OpenWRT it has 8000+ software packages you can install through the GUI. You could turn it into a VOIP telephone exchange server if you wanted, or an email server, or a network time server synced to GPS, or…. It's also dual band Wifi 6, which can send/receive much faster than this.

The other one's cheap and hackable, you can put OpenWRT on it and run all sorts of software on it, just with a bit more difficulty (and less CPU power) than the Slate. It appeals to people who like to tinker with computers.

If you just want a cheap travel router - no VPN or adblocking, no Multiple In/Multiple Out antennas to work around radio-reflecting metal surfaces - then I'm sure this unit would be fine, and the battery is a nice feature.

          • @jong: Do you still need to pay for a VPN service with the Slate?

            • +1

@lomie: Maybe ZeroTier - I've never used it.

But understand how it works - it's connecting your gear, to your gear. This doesn't give you a VPN endpoint in another country, unless you ship the thing over there and convince someone to plug it in.

It's more for if you're out, and want to VPN in to your home. Or you're in a hotel room, and want your laptop etc. to be connected directly to your LAN at home.

            • @lomie: yes you do

            • @lomie: If you have an OpenVPN server somewhere (home) you can use config and connect. Doesn’t necessarily need to be paid VPN. Useful if you want to use home IP when travelling

    • It's just old stock, being released 10 years ago it's well over EOL.

It's also dlink, which is always an exercise in frustration

  • Sure is showing its age with this comment

Connect an Xbox 360® or smart TV to a DIR-506L to give them the ability to connect to your router wirelessly

Yeah, the original 360 too, as that was the only one that didn't have built in WiFi. The WiFi module was 150 bucks nd always out of stock, it wasn't long before it was cheaper to buy a new xbox. I actually still have one and was thinking for 9 bucks this might come in handy

  • My ebay plus is up for renewal but I haven't seen a deal in ages, what's everyone doing for cheap ebay plus these days?

  • So much poo pooing. This was and stil is a very useful unit at this price.

Bought one donkeys ago and used it quite a lot when travelling. Scummy expensive hotels with lan only internet or one device only wifi. Thank the stars that's almost history.

When not travelling, I've used it mainly to connect a network only printer to my wifi. Saves running an awkward cable.

N150 only, big deal. It's a cheap wifi repeater and does other stuff. Not a prob with 25/10 nbn.

    • hi BBF
may i ask do you mean you connect your wired printer to wifi using this DIR-506L or LAN only printer?
i am trying to figure out how to connect wired printer to wifi through DIR-506L.
      Thanks

      • It's been a while, but I think I used repeater mode and connected the printer to the LAN port.

It worked like a charm as the printer has USB so it powered the dlink when I needed it.
