Good road bike (entry level) safe n reliable?

I was looking to pick up a good road bike.

There is this one from oo.com.au

http://www.oo.com.au/Woodworm-White-Lightning-Road-_P112279.…

and this one from ebay

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SHIMANO-21-SPD-PROGEAR-FLAT-BAR-R…

Which one do you guys think is better? Also did you know of something better in a similar price range?

I think i would prefer a drop handle bar over a straight

  • For a bike within that price range, it would probably be better to get one by bargaining on gumtree. Saw a few reasonable ones in Sydney.

    http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/bondi-junction/bicycles/giant…

The examples I gave are flatbars though. I would try finding a more expensive drop down one then offering a price and see if they accept.

    • Ok will have a look at gumtree. thanks for the advice

  • Both are BSOs but I'd definitely go for the Woodworm.

Also consider this. This guy runs his company from his garage but the bikes are good value.

    http://www.reidcycles.com.au/2012-reid-condor-road-bike.html

I'd spend at least $500-$1000 for a road bike if I were you.

    • any reason why you would recommend the woodworm over the other one? I havent ridden a bike in a while actually. been quiet a few years. but have been on a motor bike not that long ago. So dont want to go all out on a bike. Wouldnt it be better to get back up to speed befor i spend big on a bike?

Also the reid cycles, do you have one of them or know some one who does? would you say that it is better than the woodworm?
      Cheers

  • I have a Fuji roubaix I'm trying to sell, looks like this http://assets3.ridewithgps.com/photos/medium/15983.jpg

Can give you more info if you are keen.

  • +1

I thought this was about motorbikes :(

  • the wormwood is just a crappy 18sp entry level bike. stem mounted shifters. i think the lifespan one is better. aluminum. i think the lifespan ones are being liquidated similar to a previous ozbargain deal posting.

i used to like drop handles but now i much prefer a flat handlebar. i use a hybrid at the moment.

    • So other than the stem mounted shifters whats wrong with the woodwork. still undecided as i just want a decent bike to ride around. Im not going hard core. but at the same time its got to be reliable and safe.

Also isnt the woodworm one aluminium too?

Also the lifespan one is infact just like the other deal posted on ozbargain a while ago.

      • So other than the stem mounted shifters whats wrong with the woodwork.

nothing. both are very similar. both will be just as good.

both have tourney front + rear deraileur.

the hybrid has slightly wider tyres (handles cracks in road more easily but slightly more rolling resistance). depends on what you want to use the bike for.

for woodworm, you need to take a hand off to change gears which can be an inconvenience when turning, braking or going up hills. on the lifespan, you click a lever from handlebar to go up/down.

suspension in seat post on lifespan

Also isnt the woodworm one aluminium too?

the woodworm one says alloy so i would assume chrome-moly alloy (basically steel).

Also the lifespan one is infact just like the other deal posted on ozbargain a while ago.

it's lower spec to the previous one

another thing to consider is the frame size (depends on your leg height)

ultimately it will come down to your personal preferences if you had to choose between the two.

also invest in a yellow safety vest with reflective stripes which you can pop over your attire. i got one from aldi earlier this year for $4. i think masters/bunnings has them for slightly more. being visible to cars is extremely important if you are on the road.

        • Thankyou for your detailed explanation.

Can an Steel alloy bike manage to weigh only 11-12kg? Would have thought it would be heavier which is why i assumed its aluminium.

Also another reason i was looking at the woodworm was the white colout is much clearer to see especially in the dark. having not ridden a bike in a few years i didnt want to over capitalize. I can always sell the bike later for a loss of $50-$70?

I am more worrier about the bike not being safe or breaking down.

Also Maldrat mentioned the reid bikes. Do you reckon they are better?

  • Not sure what kind of money you are looking at but try Cell Bikes in Sydney. Australia company, bikes are built overseas but are still very good. You can buy a new road bike for about $700.
    http://http://www.cellbikes.com.au
If you are not in Sydney you can order over the internet and have it delivered. I purchased a Cell Team bike back on 2006 and it still runs.

  • hi dy4me

If you are in Melbourne, this is a similar level to what you are looking at, and only $20: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Triax-Crimson-road-bike-Great-con…

I'm the neighbouring suburb and can help get it going for you.

But I'm with maldrat, if you can find the funds for a road bike with sora or better you'll have a bike that'll be enjoyable to ride for years to come.

    • hi Kingsville. im in sydney sadly. thanks for the offer thou. :)

  • I wouldn't buy a bike online, I'd go to a bike shop and buy a branded basic bike. Giant etc

    • Quality entry-level bikes have never been better made or cheaper.

I'd go new - you just can't tell if a 2nd hand one has been in a crash, and there's no warranty. And yes, you should try it on for size.

    • I have a <$500 Giant and they are the same if not worse than the supermarket bikes. Rust etc..

There was a good deal for a hybrid posted on here a month or so ago for $250? delivered from a sydney bike shop.

It is not where you buy, the name sticker or the price that will guarantee a quality bike but the actual quality of the bike is what is important.

  • If you are in Sydney, you could pop into the Cellbikes store, as per fairypenguin's suggestion. $650 for sora level gear: http://www.cellbikes.com.au/The-BEST-full-Shimano-SORA-Road-…

I know it is a lot, but it'll be much more fun to ride than you original suggestions, and going in store means you get the right size…

Or learn to maintain/build bikes and go secondhand…. many great bargains to be had.

  • I'm in the same boat,

How does this one look on eBay? I'm okay with fixing/maintaining

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Atomik-Mamba-road-bike-/190715807…

It's the right size frame for my height…

Any help? The item finishes in 1hr 30mins

  • FWIW I had a good friend flag this deal to me overnight and it's a HECK OF A DEAL:
    http://www.bikebug.com/bikes-road-complete-merida-ride-91-pa…

$539 gets you a very well known brand with Sora groupset throughout, dead sexy looking and with genuine quality components on the entire bike. Bonus of quite a nice helmet and also reasonable quality lights Oh and also a free pair of top cycling socks!!!!
    http://www.bikebug.com/clothing-socks-bikebug-babici-socks-p…

The kicker is that if you buy online and it's posted for FREE TOO!!!!!!! Seriously I've been thinking if I should sell my bike to get this haha bt isn't worth the wife's wrath, few things are! ;-)

Honestly is almost worth its own deal on the main OzB site but I CBF'd.

IF you're in SYD you can get this price by going into their North SYD store (my friend did this) so the bonus of this is they'll tune up/fit up the bike for you……..which is very handy - they save by not having to post it to you!

It might be a tad over budget for some BUT I find it very unlikely ANY buyers will look back and regret spending a few hundred extra on the bike than they originally intended but if you settle for a $250 one you might feel it was the wrong pick. IMHO anyway.

    • Doesn't look like too bad a deal , but it doesn't come with any pedals how much would an average set of pedals cost?

      • If you're asking about the price of pedals, you might also want some basic info about pedals.

I was reading this yesterday & it helped me & might help you (you should be able to make it to page 22):
        http://books.google.com.au/books?id=OaZ5PtCNiPcC&printsec=fr…

Basic flat pedals go from about $20, and it goes up from there.

        Wiggle have some well-priced alternatives:
        http://www.wiggle.co.uk/pedals/

I'll leave it to others to suggest specific types…

      • Not coming iwth pedals is always a good indication that the bike is meant for serious usage - as serious riders have their shoe/pedal combos already and so will just swap those over.

Like I said it's a tad more expensive than some other stuff discussed but better than anything else as well. $500 is still very little to spend on a PROPER bike and even if folks are bike enthusiasts they'd not be able to sneer at this bike.

Interestingly the geometry has a raised headset, meaning the riding position is higher and more upright than a traditional roadbike - this means it'd be a great choice for people who were otherwise considering a flatbar or hybrid as the riding position of roadies can put some folks off. :-)

    • looks like a great option

I've got a Merida bike with similar carbon fork and alu frame (but with Ultegra components) and it has been great.
