Hi all, haven't posted in a while, so please forgive me if I have forgotten any pertinent information.

I am looking to upgrade my rig to support the listed games at a higher FPS. I am rocking an Acer Nitro Full HD G-Sync-C 144hz 1ms IPS LED Monitor, and am not looking to upgrade that any time soon. I am hoping to run these games at 144fps and at 1080p. Currently, games like Elden Ring and RDR2 are not sitting at a stable fps and are repeatedly hitching/freezing at random points, which is making it hard to game on this system.

From my own research, it seems like the main upgrades I could do would be a new motherboard and processor, but am looking for further guidance. I am hoping to upgrade as little components as possible, but am open to hearing anything feedback and recommendations. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers

you need a more capable CPU at that resolution. Depending on your budget you can either upgrade to new gen along with new mb, new ram or get a previous gen high end CPU.

    • Yeah the CPU would be my best guess. Try to upgrade to an i9-9900K if you can find one cheap enough on the used market, or otherwise go for a different motherboard + cpu combo. Should be able to reuse all other components.

  • You need to check the smart data on the ssds and what % they are at. If they are below 90% i usually replace them.

There are currently 22% off deals going on with ebay, i would get that 5600x cpu for $220 or so and build around that. You can propably reuse your ddr4 ram, and definately reuse that video card. You would be replacing the cpu/mobo combo. You might need to replace your cooler as well if you are using a basic one that came with your 8400 although a 5600x comes with its own cooler too. I doubt the 5600x will get you to 144 fps but it is the best bang for buck.

Depending on your budget if you want a cpu that is aimed at gaming specifically get a 5800X3d instead with a comparable motherboard. This will get you to 144 fps as long as the video card is able to get you there. With this cpu you will also need to buy a beefy cooler.

  • Your mobo should support intel gen 9, get a used i7/9 9700 or 9900 (k or non-k, whatever is best value, but don't get charged stupid prices as a ryzen 5600 is more powerful and they are $200 new).

or Consider a used ryzen 5600(x) mobo combo, or new if cheap

CPU is what's limiting you here. your GPU is fine for 1080p gaming.

I'd recommend a 12th gen intel CPU as they're pretty cheap now and offer really good performance. Get a socket 1700 / B660 chipset motherboard to go with.
Mobo is around $200 depending on which one you choose, and the CPU - either an i5 12400 (around $250) or if you can afford it an i5 12600 ($350) .So you'd be looking around $500 for this upgrade for new components. (plus cpu cooler - air would be fine for either of those, around $40)

This is just my 2c. though, others might recommend AMD so definitely look into that as an option, but I know the 12th gen intels are great - I've got an i5 12600k and it blasts through anything I throw at it. I have it paired with a 4080 all my games run well over 144fps at max settings / UW1440p

    • Thanks, after looking around a bit it seems like a 12th gen i5 might be the best option for me right now. Just got to penny pinch for a bit and then I can afford it lol. Appreciate the advice

  • 1.finalise your budget.
2.may be sell your old system as is, & buy a whole-system.
3.wait for 'stock-clearance-sale'…a few months of waiting

  • from my experience, it's a cpu bottleneck when your fps is spiking.

was happening on my old setup (i5 3570k with gtx970) where my overwatch was spiking between 180fps down to 60fps on minimum settings. i upgraded the cheaper option first which was the cpu and mobo. my frames stabilised at a constant 180fps. you can push the graphics up, the fps will drop but remain constant.

i used the gtx970 for another year without any issues until i saw a 6800xt deal
