Kumquat Tree - in Late May Should It Have This Many Flower Buds?

Hello, I have tried to google around but can't quite find the right answer.

I got this Kumquat tree recently, I feel like it has too many flower buds that may be seeping energy for a new tree (esp in late autumn) - should I actively cut them off?

weird…my kumquat trees are pretty much already at the fully developed fruit stage.
my three are very well established though, around 4-5 years old

Same here. I'm in Sydney. Both are in fruit. One has green fruit the other has half turned orange.

Brisbane here - most of mine has gone orange in last week, makes for a nice little tea mixed with home harvested honey from one of my clients.

Sounds good! We usually turn the peel into jam / marmalade. Good on toast or as a winter sore throat remedy - 1 tablespoon in hot water :)

@Transient: Haha that’s exactly what I’m using it for.

Honey and citrus , please solve all my problems :’)

  • Damn trees making too many fruits…

If it's anything like my fruiting trees, the bugs, birds and pests will eat half of them before they fruit.

Cumquat is very hardy and they fruits very heavily so for a tree that size I wouldn't worry too much. It will drop fruit if it can't handle them. Otherwise it will shoot up more branches and you'll end up having to trim it (you will anyway). Don't over fertilise it though because that will do more damage.

  • thanks all!
