Would You Support The Introduction of Noise Detecting Cameras?

Old News - Noise detecting cameras are in some parts of Europe, Taiwan, the UK, and US to detect loud cars and minimise noise pollution.

Currently, noisy exhausts are largely unchecked in Sydney and reasonably common depending on area. On occasion, I have heard that there are vehicle inspection stations. There is also the option to report to the EPA in your state. eg: NSW.

Would you support the introduction of Noise detection cameras in Australia?

Personally more concerned with people with diesel 4x4 that emits heaps of black smoke in the city. I found car noise less of an issue, unless Hector is going to be running three Honda civics with spoon engines and straight piped exhaust.

With the evolution to EVs, this is quite possibly the most wasteful spending of tax dollars 🤔🙄

    • We'll need to detect they aren't making too little noise.

      • +2

EVs are an issue for blind people actually. They can’t hear them so it’s dangerous for them when crossing the road. There’s been talks of installing sound making devices in EVs to rectify the issue.

    • And ironically, the government is looking at ways to make EV!s louder…

If they sound good then why ban them?

A panel of judges could be a good part of the vehicle inspection process.

Noisy exhausts are largely unchecked? like where is your data my friend?

my biggest gripe with noise is motorcycles, probably some Harley, but then again, what would I know? happens once a month maybe, but enough for me to feel too much noise for the area it's in -probably street legal too.

I used to live near housos. One (profanity) with a chopper-like motorbike would over rev his bike on his way to work every morning at like 530am.

That said, I'd rather they make it easier to submit dash cam footage and report dangerous driving.

    • Noisy exhausts are largely unchecked? like where is your data my friend?

Admittedly, largely anecdotal. Based off discussions with friends with louder vehicles and a quick Google search.

      • police used to target loud cars and there was a certain criteria for what passes and doesnt pass ie. what rpm and what decibels and how to actually use a meter and how far away from the exhaust

i think a lot of stock cars would not pass such a test however like the rant against LED headlights your complaint isnt against manufacturers who can bypass ADR and against police who really arent in a mood to target lights or exhausts any more.

i have two places… one if off a major hwy and its an exit to where the police would jump onto the freeway

you'd readily hear the series what used to be a turbo six or v8 going off

dont want to hear that shit? dont live near a hwy.

        • i think a lot of stock cars would not pass such a test however like the rant against LED headlights

I am more thinking of modded cars. Manufacturers bypassing ADRs is a separate issue. Selling non-compliant goods would hopefully result in recalls/rectification by the manufacturer.

          your complaint…

This is a poll about a technology that isn't currently in use in Australia.

dont want to hear that shit? dont live near a hwy.

I do live in a residential area. On occasion, you do hear a car that is definitely not compliant. Friends who do have loud cars say don't be a duckhead in residential areas.

Loud pipes don’t save lives. This is one of the stupidest misnomers in motorcycling. What loud pipes do is make your tiny wee wee feel like it’s all big and strong. It’s the noise equivalent of Viagra.

I’ve been a motorcycle rider on the road for about the last 30 years and if there is one thing I have learned, it’s that loud pipes don’t save lives, they just make a lot of noise and in the wrong direction.

And cars parting like the Red Sea… no one gives a (fropanity) about your bike exhaust, let alone enough to get out of the way in heavy traffic. If anything, I find car driver get super shitty with me if I start lane filtering and will tend to close ranks, not open up.

Just so my above comment is not out of text, here is the original statement

Loud pipes save lives. Studies can say whatever they want to the contrary, but when I'm going through Sydney Harbour Tunnel in peak hour and cars part away like Moses and the Red Sea, those "studies" are worthless.

        Also:

Currently, noisy exhausts are largely unchecked in Sydney

        waits for non-anecdotal evidence

  • Its a good idea. You should send it to your local state MP.

Trucks, you need them for trucks

  • Great idea! They would likely pick up modified exhausts that have pollution management devices removed in some cases giving a fine - then another very hefty fine for those that are damaging the health of their communities.

    not just for cars

Can we get ones for kids that scream at the park?

Nobody could hear the coffins on 2 wheels and a lot more of them will get seriously injured/die if implemented.
I'm not sure if they are smart having their bikes tuned up to be loud to be heard or most likely trying to be bad ass .

    • +1

The main people who hear bikes, IIRC, are the people behind them. Once they are in front of cars, you'd hope to god, that those road users could also see them.

I think it is largely an excuse to peacock. The safety aspect, AFAIK, is massively overstated and often backed by a few anecdotes.

"Passive" safety is massively overrated regardless of the situation and often leads to choices that are not beneficial to wider society. For example, buying SUVs/4WDs for safety.

As a rider, you should be constantly aware of what is going on around you and ride to those conditions.

Australians really want every moment, every morcel of their lives policed.

    • +5

      Call the spelling police!

    • I think people would like to see reasonable policing. For example, rather than going after minor speeding offences, target higher-end speeding offences and target dangerous driving that isn't as easily picked up by automated enforcement. Specifically for speeding, this is discussed in this recent thread.

Noise and phone cameras are interesting in that, I think, many in the community would see them as more acceptable than other forms of automated enforcement.

Where I used to live many people in our building had supercars, and some of them, plus others in the area liked to drive them around the city streets on the quieter sunday evenings. Just when most like some time to relax.
So I could potentially back penalties for unnecessary accelerating/being a nuisance. Wouldn't it be nice if a police officer target these rather than us have another monitoring device on the streets generating revenue for the sake of it.
Every red light / speed camera adds a little spike of stress to everyones day. "was I over?"
As a driver I'd rather drive to the conditions or what I estimate the speed limit to be instead of having to glance down at the speed while trying to keep an eye on the roads.
People are stressed enough as it is.

        • the reason why police dont target supercar drivers is these people have the money to fight a charge

IMO these are the visible or audible ones… where I am i can readily tell that the various V10 and AMG owners are going nuts in the middle of the night… rather than this why not target Harley Davidson owners?

and to me this place is indicative of the automotive karens out there and here

tells me people happily want to live in a police state

            @tonyjzx:

tells me people happily want to live in a police state

That's not what it says at all. To me, it tells me that people, by and large, are good, honest, law abiding people and they are sick of loud shitbox cars, trucks and bikes at 9pm on a Sunday night in their street, and if the trade off for a quiet night is a camera with a decibel trigger on it is the solution, then that is a happy medium, because this camera isn't going to bother the law abiding and polite people, only the knuckle dragging "iT's JuSt ReVeNuE rAiSiNg" inconsiderate arseholes that make all the noise. Police state, my arse.

Your idea of a police state and mine are at opposite ends of the scale. Being told to "shut the (fropanity) up" when you are riding around on your open piped Harley/Mustang shitbox isn't a police state, it's called being an ignorant, entitled moron. They can put up 20,000 cameras and it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

InB4: some bullshit about how loud cars/bikes are "We're just having fun" and "They aren't hurting anyone"…

  • +2

Any such move would simply turn into a revenue-raising exercise by government without any real action being taken at the time it's needed.

    • its not what this state wants to target and so in the words of a dearly departed transport minister "we not in a mood to trial such measures"

      so lol
