Singapore - Suggest a Hotel for Family of 4

Team,

I'm going to be visitng Singapore for 6 days in December 2023. I'm starting to get a headache now to find a decent hotel for 5 nights. I've got two kids (4 & 7 yr old) and budget is upto $300/night. Looking to stay close to MRT station.

Majority of places i'm finding are not suitable with 2 children interms of bed requirement. I'm looking for one room that has two double/queen or either two single and double/queen bed.

So far i'm only able to find two places that has family rooms available.

  1. YWCA Fort Canning
  2. Hotel Royal at Queens

Does anyone have an experience with either of these two options Or able to suggest some other options.

Thanks

avoid the cheap hotels around geylang road.
I was suckered by the inexpensive rates and fake photos. spent 30 minutes there and walked out.
booked a suite in Fraser Robertson Walk .
it was a last minute booking for 5 of us (us + 3 young kids)
arrived at the place and the concierge said - "I'm sorry Atomic but we don't have the 2 room suit, we have to upgrade you to a 3 bedroom apartment" .
    i gracefully accepted.

our last visit to singapore in 2019 we did an Airbnb. $125 for a night

    • Who is Atomic?

        my real name.

        • That makes sense. Cheers

    • Thanks mate, Do you happen to have that AirBnb reference ?

      • unfortunately it's no longer listed.

Airbnb is illegal in Singapore so can no longer find.

Budget of 300SGD for central might be difficult for a family room.

I just came back from Singapore, room was shoe box for $300, Mercure Bugis.

Renting out property on home sharing platforms like Airbnb is not technically illegal in Singapore. However, the government imposes a minimum rental period of 3 months for non-landed private property and 6 months for Housing Development Board (HDB) flats, which are a form of government housing.

There are no laws preventing guests from staying in Airbnb properties in Singapore. But in light of Singapore's housing laws as mentioned above, there is a risk of Airbnb guests with confirmed bookings being turned away by building security, as has happened in the past.

my experience with airbnb in singapore involved the host telling me not to say that I was renting it as an airbnb (if any one asked) and to say that the host and I were friends

  • This one : https://www.shangri-la.com/en/hotels/jen/singapore/orchardga…

Excellent location. Good breakfast. Went with Family. Worth it tbh. I used luxuryescape for booking.

    • Thanks. Unfortunately, it's not available between 22/12 - 27/12.

        Thats a shame.
300/night is a bit tight specially in december. You should push your budget to get a decent hotel specially when you are planning to stay for 5 nights.

  • This was my second option if I did not pick Shangri-la.
    Royal Plaza

  • Have you looked at Holiday Inn Orchard rd City Centre? (do not get confused with the express one). They have two doubles room, and I think you can ask for extra bed too for additional charge.
Alternatively, look at also Village hotel bugis. They have family room also of 1 king + single bed.

    • Thanks. I had overlooked the Village Hotel Bugis..It definitely fits the bill…Holiday Inn Orchard rd City Centre looks good too but little expensive.

      • I stayed at the Holiday Inn Orchard Rd City Centre in Feb 2023 - it was good for my family of 4. In general, hotels in SIngapore seem more expensive than they were before covid.

  • Furama hotel

    • Stayed there (Furama Riverfront) in December and again in January. The checkout was a bit chaotic, but the room was clean. Close to an MRT but taxis around Singapore are cheap anyway.
We stayed in a Family room - 1 large double + 2 bunks.
      We 'd stay there again.

      • I stayed at city center. Either my room or the entire building is in need of a renovation. But the location was fantastic.

  • Strand Hotel. Available on your dates. Above the budget though. Oh well Singapore is the most expensive city in the world.

  • Try Stamford Plaza. Its right next to a MRT station.

  • lyf Farrer Park, located in Little India. Go for the Two of a Kind (2 bedroom) option.

  • There are quite a few "Village Hotels" in Singapore and some more by the same group - You could try Village hotel Bugis or Changi City /Katong, in that preference. Location wise, Bugis is Central (have 2 train lines serving it, as well as numerous buses) , Changi city is in east (about 10-15 min taxi/grab from airport , but is on direct train line which connects the airport) . Katong is also in east ,is served well by buses and has a good collection of eating/ drinking joints all over east coast road/katong complex. This location is served well by buses, but MRT station is a few min walk.

    • Thanks mate, I ended up booking Village Hotel Bugis.

      • Cheers. Hope you have a nice stay.
I was based out of Singapore for a few years before moving to Oz a few weeks back, feel free to pm with with any questions or anything you need advice on.

  • If you needs recommendation on where the locals usually go to, just drop me a pm. Glad to share.

    • Thanks. Me and wife are foodie. Please recommend a hawker centre. We enjoy all types of Asian dishes. Is 'Lau Pa Sat' really worth going or is it over rated in terms of authenticity of dishes.

      • Lau Pat Sat is not over-rated. As it serves mostly office crowds and tourists, the prices tend to be slightly pricer.

There are many hawker centre in Singapore serving good and affordable prices. One of the more popular hawker centre is OLD AIRPORT ROAD FOOD CENTRE. You can find many good yummy stalls over there. (https://finestservices.com.sg/blog/old-airport-road-food-cen…). It is also not far from City.

      • Tekka Center is cheap and have plenty options but is only opened until noon.

      • It is a good melting pot kid of one major eating spot around the CBD area..it does offer quite a bit of variety in cuisine. Then there's the food court in Suntec (Basement 1) - it has both a food court with Asian cuisine, and a fair sprinkling of restaurants as well. Avoid the food court in MBS (marina Bay Sands) if you can, that's not a good experience. For Indian Fare, Little India has very decent options (Try bismillah biryani and Usman for authentic Pakistani, and MTR for authentic South Indian stuff). For middle eastern fare - Arab Street around bugis around is lined with restaurants offering Persian/Iranian/Turkish cuisine (check the ratings on tripadvisor, they keep fluctuating a bit). Try Blukozina to sample some authentic Greek fare (Its a restaurant, $$-$$$)

        • Here are a few Apps you would need for commuting.
Taxi : CDG Zip (Comfort Delgro - your regular taxi)
Grab, Gojek, TADA : Private Car hailing (Think Uber)
Bus@SG , SG Bus - For bus time tables, real time position, route tracking and expected wait
Google Maps , CityMapper - for General browsing
For all local transport - including Bus, MRT , Sentosa light rail. LRT , you can use any Visa/Master card (No AMEX). To try to get something Revolut or any other credit card that DOES NOT attract any international transaction surcharge.

          • @rsanghoi: Thanks..Really appreciated. These are an excellent tips and recommendations, particularly on restaurants around Bugis and Little India.

  • Try Ascott properties , they are apartments rather than hotel rooms and a Singapore company , I think they have approx 10 properties in Singapore . Also Oakwood apartments might be good. These type of properties are good as have full sized fridge and cooking facilities as well as a lounge room etc which can save money and is better than a small room shared by a family. Also if you sign up for the membership rewards program you can get a special rate and Ascott also provide people with birthday vouchers so if you or your partner has a birthday coming up you may get a 30 percent discount voucher . Not sure how long you may need to be a member before a voucher gets issued but it usually arrives about 6 weeks before your birthday.

  • Marina Bay Sands, incredible pool and view of city/water :)

    • At $300/night? Lay off the glass BBQ mate.

  • Have you tried just entering a search for 2 adults for double rooms. Are you looking for rooms with 2 queen beds + sofa bed etc? If not, just don't declare the kids.

  • Enjoy! Food is cheap and so easy to find. MRT is great although the people definitely not requiring a lift hogging said lifts are a bit annoying. Be prepared for the money to fly out of your wallet for everything else.

  • Just stayed at the Grand Copthorne Kings for a few nights & it was lovely. It has recently been renovated so all rooms are brand new. Its just on the river close to Havelock MRT which is on the new Thomson East Coast line.
