This is the lowest price I have seen so far for this recently released Garmin Edge 540.

I'm reading that the new 540 and 840 are very similar, however a difference is the 840 has touch screen.
Can I ask about your thinking, in choosing the 540 over the 840, and how you think the button-only experience may be like?buttons are great in the winter with gloves. Wet screen/fingers can cause touch to not work properly
the 840 has buttons now too though which is good and eliminates the worst part of the 830
Yep, I think the 530 was a way better option than the 830, but it looks like the tables have turned for this generation. Very happy with my 530 though.
Check out DC Rainmaker’s review on YouTube. He reckons that due to the latest complexity of the software, this is the first time he recommends the 840 for easier interaction.
It is bizarre that a bicycle GPS receiver costs more than the bicycle attached to it.
I bought a secondhand Garmin GPS receiver for $80 from Cashies.
It also includes access to Garmin connect and maps updates. I think it is worth it.
These products are not aimed at consumers riding $500 bikes.
lol, you are not their target customer if your bike cost less than the gps
Not if you attach it to this

(Or basically any half-decent road or mountain bike)I bought a new mountain bike from Subway for $50 plus $10 for delivery.
If I bought the Garmin for $540, a thief would steal the Garmin and leave my bike alone!
Price match at 99bikes for additional 5%
Good luck with that
840 also on sale but only the solar variant :(.
Seems to be a lot more places in AU selling 540 normal and 840 solar. The other 2 (540 solar and 840 normal) are around, but not as prevalent.
Personally, I'm waiting for 840 normal at a better price, but at full price it's not a deal when you can find the 1040 for only a few dollars more.
Same here. My old 520 lasts only about 3hrs - especially now it’s cold.
… Also need to seek approval from the head of finances….You can replace the batteries yourself if you're handy and need a stop-gap while you wait for prices to drop. I've done a 530 and a 510. 510 was much easier, but 530 wasn't too bad if you've got experience opening up phones and other screw-less electrical devices. For the time and parts though, you might end up in the same place as just paying full price for an 840 today…
840 is available at ccache for 735. But, I think, it's a bit too much and you can have 1040 for just a little more.
I'm still going strong with my edge 810.
I like how the maps aren't locked down with the edge 810 and I can use topo map cards or OpenStreetMap custom maps.
With this pricing strategy, I'm looking forward to the realease of the Garmin edge 000.
