Boost Mobile Phone Change of Ownership to 14yo Child

I am trying to transfer my 14yo daughters phone number into her own name.

We were with Woolies mobile but they can’t change ownership of just one number, they can only transfer all numbers and I wish to keep my number with them. They suggested porting out her number to another provider and completing a change of ownership there, then port back. Seems simple enough.

I did my research first however and discovered Aldi, Vodafone and Amaysim all need the owner to be 16 or 18+. Did a live chat with Boost who confirmed no minimum age (I have the transcript). So, I purchased 2 sims, 1 in my name and ported the number over and another in her name. No issues there.

When I rang up to request change of ownership they advised they couldn’t do it due to her not being 18. I am so angry as I have it all in writing tell me they could do it and the exact steps to follow but all they did was apologise for the misinformation and told me to wait 4 years!!

Can anyone help me to figure out if there is anything I can do now? I just want my daughter to have her account with Woolies mobile (to get 10% discount) and keep her existing number (which is currently in my name). Any advice appreciated.

You were given incorrect information, when told you could change the number into your 14 yo daughter's name.
Phone sims involve a contract with the provider. People under 18 can't enter legally binding contracts.

People under 18 can't enter legally binding contracts.

They can enter contracts for essential services, which some might argue a mobile phone is.

      • This would suggest otherwise.

        From: https://yla.org.au/sa/topics/courts-police-and-the-law/contr…

However, if the contract is not for a necessity, perhaps a mobile phone contract, or a contract to buy a car, then someone under the age of 18 cannot sign and be bound by the contract. In other words, the terms of the contract will not enforceable against an under 18 year-old.

There may be exceptions to this age requirement: for example, if the contract is for a “necessity” (like your education, employment, or when you buy food), it will be binding

Further to this Boost's terms of use specifically state they are governed by the laws of NSW, so users would need to be 18+ years to enter an enforceable contract with them.

          Applicable Law:
These Terms of Use are governed by the laws of the State of New South Wales, Australia. You agree to submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of that State.

Suck that they are being sneaky in not metioning the age in their terms of use, like other service providers so, but…..

I doubt any company wants to be partially responsible for something a teenager would do (access adult material, services, child exploitation, etc. etc. using a service provided by them).

The parent who allowed this would be the first person running around the media blaming the service provider, for allowing thier 'child' unfettered access to the Internet…

          • @xuqi: It is only pre-paid though. Is that considered a contract? Also yes I checked terms and conditions and couldn’t see an age there, whereas other providers are quite transparent about ages. It’s a bit weird.

            • @AngieH: All transactions are based on contracts, even the simple act of buying a bag of lollies from Woollies.

    • Yes it seems I was told the incorrect information. However it’s strange as Woolies Mobile allows a mobile number as young as 10. I set this up for my 2 other children after making the mistake with my eldest. I did not lie about date of birth or ID or anything. I suppose this is why I’m so frustrated as my younger 2 have accounts in their own name, but eldest doesn’t. They are only pre-paid accounts too so no huge bill can be racked up.

If woolies will still do it regardless of age, can you port YOUR number out, so you disconnect your account from your daughters, then change your daughters account to her name, then you port yourself back?

        • Hmm maybe. I have a lot of banked data that I’m not willing to lose if it doesn’t work out though so I’d rather not mess around with my account/number.

  • amaysim did it a couple of years ago for our three children, only one of which was an adult. seems they have changed policies
    .

    • Yes they must have.

Is there a reason you can't really wait till they are 18? Seems like you are causing a load of stress for very little gain.

    • Yes to get the 10% discount on my grocery shop. That essentially covers the phone credit each month.

Been there done that. Found out I only got one 10% discount even though I had a Woolworths phone service and a Woolworths car insurance policy. Then I realised the obvious. Its one 10% discount per Everyday Rewards CARD. So I got an everyday rewards card for the car, linked the car insurance policy to it, and got one 10% off each month when I swiped my card, and another when I swiped the car's card. They didn't check to see how old the car was when I applied for an ER card for it, and they wouldn't check whatever birth date you give for your kids.

        • So registering your car's ER card like?

          First Name: Mitsubishi
          Surname: GordonD

        • Hi, unfortunately she does have her own ER card but the issue is with Woolies Mobile as both phone numbers are under my name/account. They say they cannot split them up into separate accounts. You can only add 1 ER card per account in the app.

  • My teen has had multiple accounts/numbers in his own name through Boost. At times it has taken a couple of shots to get them to do it, but I haven’t had any major issues. The most recent SIM would have been activated late last year. I’d keep trying in the hopes you snag someone who will do it for you.

    • Oh wow really? Ok I might give it another crack with the online chat then. Doesn’t hurt I guess. Thanks 😊

We have two Woolworths mobile accounts, I think they are both in my name, but I also have two Woolworths rewards cards, one in my Wifes name and one in mine.
To get the discount you simply attach an eligible mobile account to the Rewards account. Done. There doesn't appear to be any checking on who's name either account is in.

Both rewards cards work. One is the primary we use all the time, the second one is pulled out once a month :)

    • So op should port both numbers back in her name, then set up a new rewards account for her daughter's number and attach?

      • If that's all you want to achieve, that's what I'm doing.

      • Unfortunately won’t work. On the app both phone numbers are under the same account. If I change it to her ER number, mine changes too and vice versa. Can’t seem to link them separately.

        • Ahhh yes, both my accounts are against different email addresses.

    • Hi thanks but unfortunately she does have her own ER card but the issue is with Woolies Mobile as both phone numbers are under my name/account. They say they cannot split them up into separate accounts. You can only add 1 ER card per account in the app. Unless there is another way to link them, I can’t do it.

      • As above, create a second account with a different email address (even if they have the same name).

Resolved for now. Another call/live chat to Boost and they happily transferred the phone number into my daughters name. Maybe I was told the incorrect information the second time, I’m not sure as she didn’t explain. I didn’t question it. Just happy it was all done in about 5 mins with no fuss.

Thanks to those that had helpful suggestions 😊
