Someone correct me if im wrong, but doesn't VAT only apply to UK and EU purchases

If this is the case, why don't they deduct VAT from total at checkout for overseas buyers?

I think Asos does the same.

Is it an illegal practice in the UK to do so?

I believe they ship out of Guernsey rather than the UK to take advantage of lower taxes and postage rates.
