Energy Retailer Sign up Bonus and Switching between Retailers

Does any know if you can switch in and out of a retailer to receive their sign up bonuses?

Eg. I'm currently an Energy Australia customer and have Electricity and Gas supplied by them, but I only switch my Electricity Origin Energy to take up their $100 bonus. But after 6 months, I want to switch my Electricity back to EA, would I get their sign up bonus for signing up for their Electricity, which is currently $50 or I wouldn't cause I'm still a customer since I have my Gas still with EA?

If then after another 12 months, I switch back to Origin Energy and they have a sign up bonus for let's say $100, would I now be considered a new customer and receive the $100 bonus?

The reason for switching back and forth is the plans with retailers only last about 12 months, but if another retailer has better rates then I would switch since there is no exit fees, but was wondering what the rules are on also getting the sign up bonus.

Thanks.

what do the terms and conditions on their websites say?

  • Did you read the contract you signed on when you agreed to their terms and conditions? If you did what does it say? If you did not then read the contract as it should have the info you are asking in it.
The contracts change over the years, so the current one may not be correct.

  • i'm with globird for gas n electricity. sign up bonus was $220 in march (after 6 months). Was considering Tango as their usage rates were lower but sign up 3 month bonus was lower. Sort of regretting that as now the feed in tariffs have gone down, but not by much…. FiT sucks and has been going down and down for years.

It depends on the Terms & Conditions. Which can also change over time.

I tend to switch Electricity and Gas every 1-3 months taking advantage of the best signup promotion offers available. I find sign-up credit offers adds up to more savings for me than lower rates.(if you take the time to switch regularly).

Some energy companies will only give "new customers" the signup credits. Example Globird " New customers" includes any old customers in the last 12 months. So I'm not eligible for Globirds sign up credits (including friend Referrals) until after 12 months.

Some energy companies allow switching back to them and avail the Signup credit again (no timeframe)
As an example, I switched electricity to AGL received $100 credit, stayed for 3 months, then switched out to 1st Energy for $100 Woolworths eCard, stayed for 45days, then switched back to AGL for a new signup $75 credit, stayed 35days, then switched from AGL to Sumo for their $100 sign up credit.

Gas meter reads are every 2 months in Victoria, so I tend to switch before next meter read (every 2 months)

Check T&C before switching to check your eligibility.
If not in their T&C, then chat online to confirm with rep (making sure to save chat transcript in case Credit isn't honoured later on)
