Here's a mod to get Samsung Health Monitor working on non-Samsung phones.

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/restrictions-removed-sams…

    • Wouldn't you just use google fit if used with a non-samsung phone?

      • +6

The mod is required in order to use the blood pressure and ECG functions on the watch.

It's an absurd artificial restriction that Samsung placed on these devices.

  • @dman1

    • +3

That looks like a direct import

    • +5

Imported Not AU model | Without ECG & Samsung Pay

      • So this amazon has ecg and samsung pay?

        • +1

ECG works even on imported / non AU watches. I have a UK variant and it works fine.

I'm not sure about Samsung Pay since I don't use it, Google Wallet can be installed as an alternative.

Is there any difference from this one being sold at kogan? The price is $259.95 since ages.

    Samsung Galaxy Watch5 (40mm Case Bluetooth) https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/buy-mobile-samsung-galaxy-watch…

Says "International Model" so not AU stock. Might be missing some features.

  • Echo Dot for $19 with this purchase

  • easily price matched via JB live chat

better get 45mm for more battery

  • Which watch should I get for my Mom? She would just be using step counter and maybe one or two more features with music perhaps. No NFC required. Good battery life would be nice…. so I dont think these 1 or 2 day battery life smartwatches would be right.

    • +1

      fitbit or garmin

    • +9

      ‘Mom’? This OZbargain mate

      • -1

To be fair it's mother, not muther.

      • Mom Mom Mom Mom Mom. Have a great day :)

    • Huawei GT 3 SE - used to be a Samsung watch user for many years but since making the switch to Huawei I don't have to worry about charging my watch every night, more like every 10 days.

  • Would this work well with huawei phone? I read mixed reviews on connection to non samsung android phones

  • Is this worth upgrading to from the Gear S3 Frontier?

    • +3

No. I upgraded and it wasn't worth it. ECG only works if you want to wait 30 seconds, blood pressure takes a few times sometimes and you need to calibrate it against another blood pressure monitor once a month. Everything that this watch does the frontier does with the protective bezel, and you'll miss the rotating bezel with is satisfactory clicking and solid 2 days battery where the 5 is bearly 2 days.
      Wait for the 6

      • No Wear OS on the Frontier though?

      • haha literally exactly the info i wanted as well

the bezel is a major selling point even samsung doesnt realise

        • You can get the same kind of function without the bulk by using the simulated bezel feature. For example you can scroll down the apps list by dragging your finger around the bezel along the edge of the screen on the 40/44mm.

          • +2

@Techie4066: its not about the functionality

literally 99% about the tactility. its a very sensory feature

  • -1

    40mm is poo poo battery

    • +2

It's actually fine on the new model without LTE

      • -1

Barely last 3/4 of a day with most things off except heart rate

        • +3

Then yours is faulty. My wife gets easily 1.5 days with one charge and that's with everything on.

3/4 of a day isn't a usable product and that's not what you should be seeing.

          • @Sxio: Is she happy with a smart watch that last 1.5 days

            • @aerona: Is anyone? But that's standard for galaxy watches. I just have a charger at my computer and charge it for an hr or two every day at work. Gets me through fine.

It's definitely not a plus for them though. But I like the watch.

              • +2

@Sxio: We're going backwards, s1 had almost a week, s2 had almost 3-4 days and now 1-1.5 days has become the norm. Its only the norm for 4/5 watches.

But after all said and done, point still stands, the battery life is still poo poo. We the majority of customers shouldn't accept this as the norm

                • @aerona: If that's your sticking point then just don't buy the product?

Problem solved mate. There's other models that have what you need.

  • +1

RIP to people who had FOMO and bought the crappier watch 4 instead on the last deal. You can already people having buyers remorse with ebay and fb marketplace flooded. Samsung are unable to sell enough of these watches and moving up the line. Next will be the 45mm and pro. If watch size isn't an issue, I'd absolutely wait for pro deals.

    • +1

They're flooded because Samsung was giving them
(black Watch4 40mm) as bonuses on A series phones

      • ppl are so emotional over these watches lol

samsung giving a $250 freebie and ppl acting like they got personally attacked

meanwhile ppl happily pay a premium for other brands with no freebies and additional cost for their accessories

        • +1

If the deal were truly good, people wouldn't be eager to sell them. This was Samsung's attempt to salvage a failed product by dumping their stock (and I say this as a Samsung customer myself). Even the larger battery version was being sold for just $165 at JB.

This was my first watch and I had instant buyer's remorse, before switching to a watch 5 pro and couldn't be happier. Warning others about this product isn't the same as being "emotional," especially when there are people promoting the idea that you shouldn't complain because it's a big discount. A larger discount on a lousy product doesn't make it any less lousy.

Other brands don't offer freebies or as substantial discounts, however their resale values remain strong, even after several years. You end up paying more when it's eventually time to upgrade with samsung.

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]: i get that

but what im saying is, there are worse products being sold for higher markups

this one was given away, so similar to first gen wireless buds they were being sold by owners to offset the cost of purchase of their device. This is a positive thing

as for direct buyers, its come down significantly in price so that even if its not perfect, it still functions. People are mostly annoyed about battery life

ive used the first gen moto 360 that didnt even last a day, had hardly any features, and daily drive the Galaxy watch 3 which also has poor battery life compared to the new watches and survive fine.

the prices will also come down too. and im not talking about those "warning others" which is a good thing because it helped me steer clear of the last 2 generation of samsung watches. im specifically talking about those trashing the company for needing to cut the price in the first place and overstocking them. it makes no sense to get emotional about that

    • The watch 4 has the same SoC, so same battery life?

      • Smaller batteries in all models

    • +1

This might be me… I got the watch 4 classic for $260 but… it's really nice!

Sure it's great to get a bargain but eventually you have to make the buy and if you like the product, it's all good.

Just hurts a little when you see it immediately drop another $50. But only a little.

      • I know how you feel! I Recently just bought the watch 4, only to find the watch 5's price edge ever closer in price 😭 at any rate though, not complaining as money saved is money saved 🤓 I also bought a watch 5 for dad so, as long as we can tell the time and get a bit of that lovely health tracking, all g!

I hope you enjoy the watch! 😁

        • Beat this. I bought the watch 5 for my wife for mothers day. $319. Then i see this!!!

But the watches are cool. I really like both! The sleep tracking is wild!

  • +2

The battery life is improved but keep in perspective it's around 15% on the 40mm and 12% on the big one approx. The battery in the version 4 46mm is way bigger the the version 5 40mm. The 46 is big though if you have a slim arm maybe the 40mm will suit you.

As for the version 5 being better well the top model loses the twist selector which you will use all the time. Obviously cost saving for Samsung in the new model. I bought that one, version 4 a few weeks ago for around 250 on the ozbargain ebay deal and glad I did :)

    • +1

Yeah! I recently bought the 4 not too long ago as well and really love it for its mechanical wheel design

  • You can get the model 4 for cheaper and it's ALMOST identical in terms of specs.

    • what about battery life?

      • From my experience, it lasts 2-3 days without a charge which is impressive! My usage isn't all that crazy - check phone, check a few emails/messages and that's it! But if you were doing all sorts of health stuff, probably a solid 1-2 days is my guess

      • They're both pretty crap from what I'm reading.
I've got the Watch 4 LTE 44mm and I certainly won't ever buy a Samsung watch again.

  • How does Samsung watches compare to Huawei GT series?

    • +1

Samsung are strong across the board as they've got experience with tech and software. While not perfect (no watch ever is) Samsung are reliable. Huawei too I would imagine - who knows though? It might depend on user preference. Best to search on the tubes 'difference between Huawei and Samsung wearables' 🤓

  • I don't understand the tech! Can someone help me know if:
    1) this could play music from Youtube Music (Premium, downloaded)?
    2) if this is LTE and can make purchases without my phone near by?
    Cheers

    • 2) I realise there's an option to select LTE thus no, the deal is LTE-less

      • Google Pay does work while offline.
There is a native YouTube Music app for WearOS which does allow downloads.
