At Fault Accident (Minor), Query on Repair Time

Hi all.

I was in my first at fault accident today, mild rear end accident, my Camry became one with a Ford Ranger. Lodged claim with AAMI, capital smart which you have no choice in going through, I can’t even get assessed at any of the Melbourne centres for 8 or more weeks, which I find unbelievable considering the price of premiums.

Curious to know if this is standard for wait times? We’ve got 2 young kids 3yrs and 5mnths. We both work full time, unsure how we will proceed with transport going back to 1 car.

I’m tempted to replace the headlight myself, cancel the claim and not even deal with the dented bumper on my car. Other party isn’t interested in repair as his bumper only had mild scuffs.

Cheers!

  • do whatever you like
    either wait
    or
    replace the headlight

  • Does your insurance policy include provision of hire car during claim repairs?

  • Do you have rental car on your policy? Unroadworthy without working headlights

    Edit: answered above

    • Not included
      They want $90 a day.

I’m not planning on driving it the way it is

Should have ticked the hire car option …

    I'd just cancel the claim.
And repair the headlight yourself if you're capable.

You did not give all of the info as you ticked the option to say "My car is safe to drive", which means you go into the long queue to get repaired.

Repair times have not recovered from the covid supply channel problems. Had to wait 5 weeks for a non safe car to drive accident caused by other party.

  • It's a Camry. If you can get your hands on parts, might as well do it yourself - (I'm assuming you're bringing it up because you know how to).

I manage a fleet of 154 vehicles usually to have it assessed is 7-14 days and 3 months to book it in for repairs

  • I had an accident myself (not at fault)
End of July is current general wait time for panel shops atm.
I managed to get one myself (I have choice of repairer) that is taking my car tomoroow.
Sadly, the industry is under immense pressure atm

  • DIY or go to a panel shop and ask for a cash (non insurance) price. If it’s just a headlight the excess will likely be a similar cost anyway.

  • Thanks for the input everyone.
