Who would have thought holding a state of origin match in a state that isn’t part of the competition might not get the intended uptake.

    • Who would have thought hey? Gotta say the AFL are doing a better job of including the rest of the country. I remember I'd just moved to Sydney from Melbourne and a guy I worked with asked me if I'd watched origin last night. "Nah" I said.. "who was playing". Coming from Vic I thought it was a good question. I got a look that just oozed "you're an idiot"!

      • +5

Afl tickets are free in sydney and still wont be a full crowd.

        • Football is a dying sport

        • -1

It's the same for NRL matches too. Most games the stadiums are mostly empty.

          • +3

@demod: Not from what I have seen. Even the Wests Tigers pull a crowd, especially at Leidchart Oval. Though having said that, all the suburban grounds only hold around 20 000 people; Penrith; Cronulla; Manly; Wests - Leidchart / Campltown; Kogarah.

          • +1

@demod: The average NRL attendance for 2023 is: 21,550
            I wouldn’t call that empty.
Normally the good seats in rectangular stadiums face east. The same direction as the camera.

        • You do know that the Swans are the most attended team in Sydney don't you?

      • +4

You can keep your Victorian leg tennis, i have seen games of netball with more contact and athleticism. The only thing going for that weird sport is scarves, and we don’t need those in gods country.

    • +2

Didnt State of Origin in Perth last year set a stadium attendance record?

  • +12

    Are the Rams playing???

  • +4

    Winning side:
    1. Walsh
    2. Coates
    3. Val
    4. Gags
    5. Cobbo
    6. Munny
    7. DCE
    8. Welch
    9. Hunt
    10. Cotter
    11. Kaufusi
    12. Fifita
    13. Carrigan
    14. Grant
    15. Tino
    16. Horsburgh
    17. Arrow

    • +4

Pongod needs to be at 1.

Tino to start at prop and Cotter on bench
Dunno who Horsbough is but I will have Walsh on the bench too. So 2 utilities on the bench for lolz

      • +2

This. Ponga was the difference in game 3, they can't not reward that with loyalty. He's a big game player, he can handle the pressure. Walsh is on the ascendency but he's nowhere near Origin ready in terms of maturity & keeping calm. Plus he doesn't play so well when the chips are down.

        • Turbo is not fit for origin but I would take a punt on him. Turbo and Latrell playing center is deadly. Last time nsw smacked qld those 2 did all damages.

          • @yamahamoto: Too out of condition. Latrell and Campbell Graham better option this year.

        • My only concern is Pongod is not a fulltime fullback anymore, knights really screwed him up

    • No way a rookie starts in origin at fullback.

      • Plenty have - Lockyer, Minichello, Brett Hodgson to name a few

      • wot… he was going to start last year until he got injured.

      • No way a rookie starts in origin at fullback.

        Isn't Walsh a kiwi?

  • +5

NSW vs QLD in SA. Makes sense.

    • +3

91,000+ attended the game last it was in Melbourne :D

      That the biggest crowd ever?

      • +3

        Melbourne people like footy..

Adelaide people do they know the NRL exists?

        • I do…. but I average one state of origin tv viewing per year plus grand final
          .

    • Eh, during COVID, in 2020, Adelaide got over 25k to the match. Not terrible.

The following year, game 1 got 27k, game 3 got 26k.

Like, the Adelaide crowd wasnt an embarrassment.

      • +2

You just googling without understanding context helps people point out how pointless your comment really was, 2021 was also during Covid restrictions and game one was in Townsville, capacity 25k (over). Game two had capacity restrictions game three was at the gold coast as it was re routed from NSW with short notice, capacity 27k.

  • +2

Give it a bit and they'll be giving these away lmao

There has been only ever one Adelaide team for NRL in the 90s for two seasons before it folded. It's been tried and tested that SA didn't even care about their own team, and now they're expected to care about 2 different states versing?

    • -1

      " 2 different states versing?"
      I don't mind a bit of poetry
      .

  • +7

As a New South Welshman living in Adelaide the issue is less the lack of interest and more the obscene prices for tickets when they aren’t gunna fill the Oval and you’re ages away from the action

    • Who do the Croweaters support in general NSW or QLD?

      • +2

They support calling it ‘Rugby’ and refusing to acknowledge the difference between codes

        • I don't even know at an amateur level if league is played here. Plenty of union.

        • +1

Same situation here. NSWelshman living here for 14 years, married for the same time. In laws still ask “how’s your Rugby team going?” after years of trying to tell them that Rugby is a different game.

The fact my kids call me “Dad-ay” and refer to Lego as “Lay-go” just rubs salt into the wounds.

There was a time you could have the world tiddlywinks championship at Adelaide oval and it would sell out. Obscene prices for tickets and food make people think twice for those events whereby they don’t have skin in the game. Could literally buy a carton of beer and pizza and watch at home for the less with the benefit of getting to bed at a reasonable time on a Wednesday night.

          • +1

@IridiumFlare: Send your kids to a new school. We have the most understandable English in the country. Pewl, kewl, poppers, devon, we are not interested in convict influenced twang such as yours ;)

I googled and we do in fact have league comp but I dont know anyone that plays it.

      • Qld gets the lions share of the crowd roar.

      • +1

If you aren't in NSW then you support QLD

        • True

        • Wouldn't say that's completely right

There are heaps of cockroaches living in Qld

    • +2

100% right. How can they justify $199 for a ticket to a State of Origin match, not only at a state that is 95% AFL supported but at an oval and not at a purpose built rectangular stadium? Even the cheap seats are ridiculously priced. I wanted to go, but I can not justify that expense.

      • But now they're 2 for 1 for $65?

        • A$35 ticket did indeed push me over the edge

        • Unfortunately, no one else I know wants to go.

  • Magic round proved every single game of NRL, origin & test matches ought to be played at Lang Park. End of.

    • That field got ripped up bad after day 1

      Queeenslanderrrrrrrrr

      • No injuries though (probably just sheer luck).

        • the fights

only time when it can be done without being a criminal offence

          • +1

@Poor Ass: Hasn't been a real good all in for many years…
Theres the pretend demonstration one occasionally to please the crowd

Im still trying to work out what ever happened to the scrum… ball now gets thrown behind the fullbacks feet… why bother with it?

            • @pharkurnell: NRL scrums have always been like that… you just huddle and look stupid with no force. Also I think if someone tries to kick the ball in a scrum it's a penalty too

It's kind of like the AFL changing that rule that you have to stand and not move after opponent takes a mark

looking forward to the Origin fights, they are the best

              • @Poor Ass:

looking forward to the Origin fights, they were the best

                FTFY.

They cracked down heavily on punches years ago, now it's just a lame exhibition of pushy shovey…

  • I had no idea this was happening in my city. I don't watch TV however if it is advertised there.

  • -6

I'll Pass….Couldnt pay me to attend.
State of Origin is an outdated concept which needs to be consigned to the dust bin of history. Not to mention the very loose eligibility rules, I guess these days it's just as simple as "which state you indentify with" and that's good enough. You have Qlders and NSWs players eligible for state of Origin yet represent some pacific Island Nation at the same time internationally. That would be like playing for Texas , yet representing Spain WTF. 99% of professional sports (Other Than Association Football) have done away with gimmicky all star , representative concepts. It's the clubs and franchises that captures the hearts of the fans not the meaningless exhibition matches where they don't go hard.

Wow South Australians…giving them SOO is like feeding cherries to a pig

    • +1

QLD vs NSW in SA where the sport is close to invisible. I wonder why they don't care?

      • Exactly. They don't deserve it. Give it to a state that cares.

        • +1

I don't think it's a matter of deserve. SA doesn't want and/or care although this appears to be a half arsed attempted to grow the game

        • State government would have paid for it. No other reason. Tourism.

Probably didn't expect NSW and QLDrs not interested in travelling midweek. Funny that.

  • I checked a week ago and tickets were $150 odd each. Not to mention it's a Wednesday night. Put out better prices and people would go

  • Not a good week for Rugby League - first the French pull the plug on hosting the 'World Cup' and now they're giving away free tickets to try and fill the stadium in the premier Rugby league event.

    • the reality is that internationally it isn't that popular, the NRL keep trying to broaden the appeal but don't understand that $150 a tkt (sure in NSW / Qld people will pay) is too much in a state where it's not popular. Let's see how the hype goes with Vegas, F1 with all their millions took decades to crack america

  • the reality is that internationally it isn't that popular

I like NRL but agree it's only really played in NSW, some parts Brisbane and some parts of Northern England. The RLWC is effectively made up of players from only those places who have a granny from somewhere else trying to pretend that they're from those places

    • +1
