Not Using The S21 Phone and Low Battery Life

Had the S21 for a while since the great deal on Ozb. Couldn't find it for a while. Only been charging and using it very rarely. Does this affect battery life? Does this shorten it? Not frequently using the phone? the keyboard is too small is why I don't like using it. I've notice the battery life is very short. Is this a design fault? Or me not charging it and not using it much?

TLDR: would not charging and not frequently using the phone shorten the battery life?

Yes if you leave it plugged in all the time. Sitting at max capacity can degrade lithium batteries. There is a setting in samsung phones to stop charging at 85% to mitigate this. You would only see an impact from this if it was almost always on the charger for a long time.

    Settings>battery & device care>battery>protect battery.

      • Does the S21 have low battery life out the factory as well?

        • Probably depends how long it was on the shelf before you bought it.

        • Usually not. Faulty units do happen but are very rare. Phones are distributed at a maintenance charge, not 100% so they wont be damaged being left on the shelf. Plus to do damage to a lithium battery really requires being maintained at 100% for a long time on a charger, not just sitting in a box.

I was going to tell you you didn't know what you were talking about when you claimed that leaving a lithium battery at 100% charge damages it, but that sentence clarifies what the facts are.

Its not it being at 100% charge that damages it. It is continue to charge it when it has reached 100%.

Both my phones, with Qualcomm chipsets, discontinue charging when the battery reaches 100%. You don't have to set anything. Its a function of the chipset to control charging. They can be left on the charger, without damage because the chipset disconnects it when the battery reaches 100%.

You can change the keyboard size. It's Android so everything is customisable.

    • thanks. I just managed to stretch the screen. still too small. not wide enough phone this S21 base model.

      • You probably want the Ultra then as it's got a bigger screen.

Unfortunately all manufacturers have gone to a slim and tall aspect because they don't want to exclude all the people with tiny hands.

I got an A73 because it's about the biggest screen you can get for a reasonable price and SD card but I still miss the screen size and aspect of my Xiaomi Mi Max 3.

Download swiftkey keyboard. It's a pretty customisable keyboard and an essential app for me.

Been happy with Gboard as well, though Swiftkey is definitely another good popular option
