Telstra Post-Paid Price Increase from July 2023

Today I received an email from Telstra advising of a price hike of about 6.7% ($89 to $95/month):

Your mobile plan is changing.

From 4 July, we're increasing the prices of our mobile and data plans in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
This is not a decision we've taken lightly and there's a range of factors we've taken into account, like our continued investment in the quality, coverage and security of your mobile service, as well as responding to increased business costs.
Our month-to-month plans mean you have the flexibility to change your plan if it no longer suits your needs.

I'm curious about what other Telstra customers are thinking e.g., staying on same plan, downgrading etc.

If you are a Telstra Post-Paid customer and will receive a price increase this year, what will you probably do?

  • I wonder if they'll do it to people under contract and let them cancel if they don't agree?

    • +1

It's Telstra.. there's no way they'd ever accept that.

No more locked in contracts at Telstra for mobiles.

Plans are month to month and devices are under repayment option. Customers can pay out the remainder of their device if they wish to leave.

      • If you're under contract for a mobile phone though you're screwed, you just have to cop the price increase unless you wanna pay out your phone (and most people don't).

        • -1

So I guess there is a way that that people under device repayment can cancel if they don't agree with the price increase.

  • Considering there hasn’t been a jb 12 month $59 with $500 card bonus for a while I think I might move my other two numbers to belong. The speeds/reliability of telstra for the last few months have been soso at best.. but my second work number has been running decently well on belong

Minimum plan with Belong now is $19 per month. They jacked as well because guess who owns them?

      Critical Information Summary

They used to have a $10 per month plan, so almost 100% price hike! I guess they don't want lots of people to "belong" anymore.

      • Mr T owns them lolz, Belong is still great at $19 a month for 5gb data per month if the price doesnt get jacked any further, the actual $19 plan which is their lowest entry plan originally started at $10 per month, but great one can accumulate as much data as one wants through unused data roll over, handy too if one can get the half price $80 starter packs including 160gb of data and with $25 friend/family referral and stay at that plan for 2 months I think overall cost $10 over 2x months for 320gb of data total, that's 160gb data rolled over each month, then one can jump back down to $19 plan for 5gb of data per month, note speeds are not as fast as being direct with Telstra

Now I wonder even though I have 2 year Jbhifi/Telstra postpaid plan and mind you contracted if theyll jack up the price, I'm sure I read it somewhere in T&C's they can raise yearly in line with CPI increases

After the last price hike I moved to a Boost yearly prepaid plan.

    • +3

moved to a Boost yearly prepaid plan.

Which will also be jacking up the price.

      • Good bargain that one!!!

      • Not for $300pa plan that most high data Telstra users would be moving to.

    • Yeah I did More. $18/mth and about 400GB (inc bonus data) with the CBA discount.

  • +1

Until Boost get esim its limiting (Optus uselessness or Telstra ripoff)

  • Makes me kinda wish they had two year contracts again. Though I bet they would put in the T&C that CPI increase can kick in mid contract anyway.

  • Belong belongs to Telstra. Telstra has a policy of increasing its prices every year. I expect Belong's prices to go up too. Like the $35 per month for 100GB data plan.

    So here's my question.

I bought a pack in Woolworths that says on the front $35/month 100GB valid for 12 months from date of purchase. So if Belong's prices go up, and the 100GB data plan goes up to, say $40, if I sign up using that SIM do I get 100GB, or $35 worth of credit towards a $40 100GB plan?

Its only relevant to my question that that "$35 pack" cost $17, except that if I bought a similar Telstra pack NOW, at today's price, that's valid for 12 months, would I get the specified plan at Telstra's current price for the first month when I used it, even after 1 July, or the increased price?

  • thank god i locked myself into a 2 year $69 jb hifi plan which is now $49 (after a nice chat with telstra) with a $700 jb gift card a few months ago.

    • +5

Wow that's amazing that you had a nice chat with Telstra.

  • Typical of the country's biggest parasitic organisation.

  • On the $25 per month ALDI plan here.
Speed is fine, reception coverage solid (Telstra)
The rollover data is great, I'm up over 100GB now.

    • is ALDI plan managed in the Telstra app? does it earn Telstra Plus points?

  • +1

I have been on Woolworths mobile for 3 months, no issues. I move Southern Highlands NSW and Sunshine Coast hinterland. Pay $30pm and get 10% off groceries once a month which essentially covers the plan. And it includes international calls

  • +1

Interesting part of this is Telstra only reacts when the CPI goes up. Prices did not go down for year Mar-21 when CPI went down. My plan actually went up then. The latest makes it a 58% increase over the last couple years. Anyways I currently get mobile and internet for the same price as a Telstra sim only plan now.

  • Dunno about the other plans, but while it’s true there’s a price increase, they’re also giving you more data. My Basic or Extra Small or whatever it’s called plan is going from 40GB to 50GB

    • +1

So many people don’t use anywhere near that data though.
      I had a $30 plan 30GB, then they said that expired and went to $55 40GB, then $58, now $62 50GB.
      I use 10-20GB .
Data costs Telstra almost zero compared to what they charge that’s why they can add more as it doesn’t cost.

  • With this increase and the lack of as good JB bonuses I am thinking of jumping ship and leaving Telstra.

    Any recommendations?

    Must have:
    Visual Voicemail
    Month to Month Plan
    Unlimited calls

Also would like but not critical
    E-Sim
    Data pooling
    Data rollover

Whats Visual Voicemail? What video voicemail? never heard of it or the term used

      • +1

Visual Voicemail is an iOS feature, not all telcos and plans support it.

Once you have it its very hard to go without.

It shows all your voicemails on the phone, and you can play, pause, delete, forward etc… if you get lots of voicemails a day its far better than having to 'call' voicemail and listen in a specific order.

Voicemail section in the calls app looks like this when you have it:

I’m on the same boat and I’m switch to Boost.
Can’t live without that voicemail, wifi calling and wifi text.
