Best Electric Lawnmower/Whippersnipper Combo

Hi All, currently renting a house with a medium size backyard and a small front yard area. Previously i had an ALDI gardenline electric mower with 2 x 2ah batteries. Found that with that I could usually finish off the backyard, then have to recharge to do the front. Well it recently bit the bullet and I wouldn't mind upgrading. Can anyone recommend a combo deal that sounds like it could do the job?

Thanks!

Go one of the Ryobi 36v range ones. I've got a pretty decent sized yard and it does take me 2 batteries to get through it all - but it's pretty solid equipment.

    • How do these rechargeable ones compare to plug in electric ones? Are the plug in ones more powerful?

Technically yeah, plug in has more power (unlimited 240volts of powarrrrgh!), but I found the Ryobi 36v stuff about as tough as a cheap petrol mower and so so much quieter and lighter.
The engine revs up and down based on load, I'm a lazy arse and mow as little as possible, so I end up having to mow the grass when it's like 15-20cm tall and it handles it well.

    • Nice, thanks - would the whipper snipper equivalent be this one: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-36v-28cm-33cm-cordless-str…

      • Yep - I've only got the 18V one - it goes pretty good too. Maybe get the mower, if you find you need a second battery get the 36v whipper snipper in a kit with a battery too.

    • I second the Ryobi 36V range. The chainsaw is also really decent with heaps of power. With 6 year tool and 3 year battery warranty you really can't go wrong. Bunnings will also happily swap any gear that stops working on the spot so convenience is great.

    EGO

Ive got both Ryobi 36V and EGO equipment. Ryobi stuff is good but i think EGO is another level above in terms of power and build quality.

I've still got EGO equipment going strong back from when Masters was still around.

I've still got EGO equipment going strong back from when Masters was still around.

Expectations have changed - my 1970's Victa is still going strong!

    • Recently got an ego blower and yeah, it kicks ass.

Hoping battery doesn’t screw me over though

    • The powerload feature is the main reason I bought the ego whipper snipper.

I don't have to deal with nuisance strings anymore, the auto button gave me an ease of mind and does all the job pushing them inside.

      • The latest Ryobi I have has a little winding handle to feed the line. Petrol one at work you feed the line through then wind the head around as well. Not difficult.

I have all Ryobi 18V battery tools, including the OED1850 edger and OLT1830 line trimmer.
We have big kikuyu lawns and they do a great job.

I borrowed an 18V mower which just was not good enough so bought the RLM36BL-0 36V mower and it does them all with about one quarter of a charge left over.
Much lighter than my old 4-stroke mower, too.

I bought Ryobi 36v gear second hand. Mower Does 350m2 of lawn (measured) on a 5ah battery when it’s maintained. If it’s a bit long it will take a second battery.

36v whipper snipper was OK until it packed it in. Seems the bearing or something in the head was susceptible to moisture and seized up, then burnt the motor out trying to turn it. Replaced with a brushless 18v Ryobi whipped snipper - also second hand.

Do you want 'good enough' or 'very good'

Good enough is the Ozito brand (36V versions). If you need to, buy a couple of extra batteries and it will be last for longer than you need (at least an hour running time). For the whipper snipper, the cheap 18V one works perfectly well but the plastic blades can be a bit annoying as they fall off every 10 minutes. The more expensive one uses a cord so is better. However, the cheap one works fine, you just have to hunt around for the blade and stick it back on every now and then.

A bit better is a ryobi. Costs a bit more

Best is something like Ego. However, for a normal sized residential lawn it might be overkill

If you already have a cordless tool collection, obviously sticking with that brand offers a lot of benefits in terms of batteries.

  • If you're just renting then I wouldn't buy premium stuff. Your next property might not even have a garden.

Hands down EGO if money allows, if not go for 36v ryobi with 6 years warranty

  • Yeah I have used a mates Ego gear and it is fantastic, but since I am not sure if I will be here long term was thinking more Ryobi, Makita … etc. Thanks everyone!

  • not dewalt, they are absolute rubbish, i had one, worked fine for 2-3 mows, then it stopped mowing any type of grass so i returned it under warranty for a repair, got told it would be 8-10 weeks, told them to refund me.

  • Silly question , newbie here ! Can you do your whole garden back and front with a Whippersnipper? never done my lawn by myself before but thinking about it … also is it dangerous for a teenager to use and help mum ?

    • Do you mean - cut the entire lawn but with a whippersnipper? I mean … maybe? But it will be uneven - so it won't look good, and also it would be quite a lot of work. In terms of safety - have them wear goggles for their eyes and make sure they know how to use it safely and respect the tool and other people. I used to do the edges with my Dads whippersnipper when I was 14 or so.

      • Agree. It’s possible to do a whole lawn with a whopper snipper, but it’s not fun and won’t look great.

I just use sunglasses, don’t really need ‘goggles’ except maybe if thee are lots of rocks around. Always wear enclosed shoes, and long pants are preferable unless you like getting smacked in the shins by stray sticks and stuff.
