Can I Charge My 2022 14" MacBook Pro on a Plane?

I'll be travelling on a Qatar Boeing 777-300ER and wondering whether I can charge my MacBook Pro 14" on the plane?

From what I can see online the seat only has a USB-A port. It does have a universal power port but how do I know if it's powerful enough to charge the laptop?

Thanks

Depends on your seat. Most banks of 3 seats in economy will have middle 2 power points near your legs which you can plug your charger in. They do supply sufficient power to charge regular laptops, tablets, handheld game consoles etc.

You may need an adapter as seems most airplanes have UK multi-plugs which may or may not have diagonal slits for AU plugs (and from experience even if they do, they fall out very easily).

  • Why don't you just charge it before you leave?

what if it runs out charge???

They are advertising 18 hours on a charge. I don't think there's many flights longer than that.

Singapore to New York (18h 50m) but Qatar 777 doesn't fly that route.

You can watch the whole Rocky franchise on that flight.

Ir's a 14 and a half hour flight and plus I'll be watching movies which churns through the battery much faster.

More of a backup if I need it

  • You could buy a big battery pack if you wanted to be sure. Would add a lot of weight.

Batteries larger than 10,000mAh are generally not allowed on planes.

      • You mean 100Wh, which is the limit. So ~27000mAh.

        • oops! Thanks for the info!

Technically you could even trickle charge it from the USB-A port (using a USB-A to USB-C cable) - it won't give you enough power to charge it faster than you're using it but it should slow the rate of battery usage

    • I've always wondered about that, might be 1% per hour lol

      • Depends on what power output the USB-A port is limited to (e.g. 5W (5V/1A), 7.5W, 10W, 12W (5V/2.4A), etc) and which particular 14" MBP model you have (the 67W power adapter or the 96W one)

Even if the USB-A port is only 5W and your MBP has the larger 96W power supply - you're still going to get 5% of normal peak charging rate at worst - which is small but not nothing

  • I just take a laptop charger battery pack. There are plenty to choose from these days.

The seat is usually a trickle and plugging a high power device can sometimes trip the circuit for the rest of the flight.
